Amazing coat!!!
November 03, 2011

I purchased this coat after trying literally dozens of others. I was on the hunt to find a coat that was both fashionable and functional. I totally found what I was looking for in the Downtown Coat from Mountain Hardwear. This coat is so super soft, has a beautiful fleece lined chest and fits me to a tee. Only thing I do wish was that the fur trim was a little bit more realistic and fluffy looking, but it wouldn't deter me from buying this coat. This coat is lightweight and super warm, perfect for these brutal Chicago winters! I recommend it to all my friends. You won't be disappointed! I bought the black, but the ivory is beautiful too!

My favorite winter coat
January 02, 2012

I got this coat as a Christmas gift and I ABSOLUTLEY love it. I've had my eyes on it for years but just couldn't pull the trigger. My boyfriend got me a large spin could wear layers under it but it was huge on me ( I'm 5'5 about 125) I exchanged it for a medium and it fits great. I also love the faux fur lined hood ( you can detach it I you don't like it). Th only things I would change about the coat is the addition of more inside hiding pockets; it does come with one. I also Thought the opening for the hands had the " monkey hand" but it didn't it died have some black fabric to protect your hand which is great . All in all I would totally recommend this jacket to any one.. Super cute and toasty warm :)

I've been known to sacrifice fashion for being cold. With this jacket I've finally found both. The Jacket keeps me warm in sub zero temperatures and withstands even the windiest Chicago day. Additional perks: the inside lining is extremely soft. I was also initially concerned about getting a white jacket dirty, but so this hasn't been an issue.

If I could marry this coat, I would.
January 10, 2011

This is my second winter in DC, and if "Snowmageddon" last year wasn't enough to convince me that I needed better cold-weather gear, standing at a bus stop in 40 mph wind gusts on a 23 degree day was. After doing some shopping around and reading more reviews than I care to recall, I settled on the Mountain Hardware Downtown coat. I figured that shelling out a little more cash now would pay off later if I lived through this and winters to come. I can happily report that every time I step outside in this coat, I smile. It's incredibly light and warm, and the fleece-lined pockets often mean I don't even wear gloves. The hood keeps my head nice and toasty, and the fleece-lined upper section is an extra layer of warmth in this winter wonderland. Being able to cinch in the waist helps keep drafts to a minimum (as do the brilliant cuffs on the sleeves) and minimize the "Michelin man" effect that all down coats have. In short, this is a fantastic coat- when I wear it, any part of my body that it covers is warm. If you live in a cold climate, especially a city, you can't go wrong with this coat.

After extensive research in my quest for a puffy coat, I decided to order the mountain hardware downtown and what an excellent choice. It's not only quite warm in brutal cold weather but the fit is as feminine as you can get in a puffy jacket. With the quality of mountain hardware, I know I will enjoy this jacket for many years. :)

Pros: Great design

My wife wanted something warm for the walk into work yet professional enough for the same. This fit the bill perfect. She loves it! It is shedding a little down as it is new but others have said that will stop.

This is the best coat I have purchased!
February 01, 2010

It keeps me warm in single digit numbers. It is made with the best quality! I am petite and it fits my small frame perfect, not big and bulky at all, like most down jackets. The hood is great that all three parts are removable. I will never buy another brand again!

Still not warm
February 18, 2011

I really wanted to like this coat. The style is very cute/flattering and the fit was good. However, it is very, very thin. I just can't imagine staying warm in this coat if I am walking outside for more than 5 minutes. I tend to get cold very easily so I'm looking for something equivalent to wrapping up inside of a velour blanket, super thick comforter w/pajamas on and unfortunately, this wasn't it. You might stay warm if you're ok with wearing 3 or 4 layers under your coat, but for the price I shouldn't have to wear triple layers.

a nice coat with only a few drawbacks
March 26, 2009

I really like this coat. It's very comfortable, warm, light, and stylish. I have two problems with it, however: the sleeves are just a bit short for me, maybe by less than an inch, but it feels a little problematic. Also, the hood feels small, and doesn't come as far over my head as I would have liked. In all other ways, this coat fits me very well, and it's hard to find coats that fit me because I am small.

Great Coat!
February 18, 2011

I'd been wanting a "grown-up" winter coat for a while but have always been too cheap to get one. Boy, am I happy I got over it! This coat makes me want to go for walks outside because it's warm and fits well. I can't comment on durability because I've only had it for a few weeks, but it seems well made. The only downside is that I don't think it would be very good in a wet snow...it doesn't seem very water resistant. I definitely recommend it, though

MH Downtown review
January 23, 2011

Looks great on my wife, she loves it, need to be slender as there are puffy horizontal quiltings...quite warm. Fur collar is removable. I've been satisfied with all of the Mountain Hardware product I have bought, this is my first non outdoor performace purchase and it's great. I have other vests, gloves and base layers from MH andthey have been in use for year. This particular coat looks great and keeps my wifevery warm...a good value.

This is the warmest coat I have ever owned. The inside fleecy fur provides a great layer of warmth above the waist and inside the pockets. The XS fits perfectly for me as a 2 petite. I'm not crazy about the collar style but it does provide neck warmth.

December 15, 2010

WARM COAT
November 19, 2010

Bought this coat for my daughter who is tiny, 5 feet and 90 lbs The extra small in mountain hardware always comes through for her with a great fit now she is warm on her city commute, waiting for buses and traveling through under-heated public spaces the coat keeps the wind and cold out and was not too long as some other similar built down coats in other brands were the inside cuffs are a nice feature too could the coat be improved?...being more water repellent for those freezing rains or wet snows

Softest, warmest
October 11, 2009

I looove this coat - it is the softest thing in the world, with fluffy fleece lining on the back, very, very light too! The hood fits very well and the side panels quilting makes it look very fitted and feminine. Forget your Metropolis jacket, this is the coat to get this year for those frosty Maine winters!

beautiful, warm, but sized oddly
October 15, 2009

Soft and awesome --- BUT I wear an 8 or 10 and the Medium is too tight for layering and the Large is way too big. Also, tight and flattens the bustline. C'est la vie. My Mountain Hardwear parka from two years ago is size Medium and fits perfectly. I'll need to find another brand of a longer down coat. The brown color is really nice - rich and coppery brown. And the fur collar is cute as can be!

so far so good
May 17, 2010

great fit from this jacket. the sleeves are perfect, and there is just enough room to bundle and layer. The hood is just right as well. one of my favorite features is the super soft fleece lining the coat, as well as it is a straight fit, it does not a-line like some of the other jackets i tried.

Best Coat!

Warm in Wisconsin
January 13, 2010

This jacket is very warm and lightweight. The length is beneficial because it cuts down on the amount of wind that gets through. Walking the kids to school is much more pleasant now. I can't see myself without it now. I LOVE IT!

September 14, 2009

I just got this coat today and it is absolutely heavenly ! It's like wearing a luxury sleeping bag. It's cozy, warm, and super lightweight. Perfect for carrying it around indoors. The only flaw is the length - I wish it was longer ! I'm 5'6" and 120 lbs and small was perfect for me with a little bit of room to spare for layering underneath.

my new favorite down jacket!
November 05, 2009

fits perfectly - I am a size 2/4, 124 lbs, 5'6" and the small fits perfect with just enough room for a light layer of fleece.

great coat
December 14, 2009

Love this coat, but it runs really small. I am 5'3" and weigh about 100 pounds. I often have trouble with even xs sizes being too big. In this coat the xs was too small. I would have loved it in a size s, but they didn't have it. Really too bad, as it is a wonderful coat. Lovely color; excellent quality, beautiful soft fabric and a great fleece lining in the upper body. Grab it if can possibly work for you.

Favorite winter coat
July 11, 2011

I'm very happy with this purchase! I've been looking for a coat like this for a long time. This coat is lightweight and attractive (has a fitted look) yet it is also very warm and I can layer underneath it - I usually wear a small but I purchased a medium to allow for extra layers in the winter. The length suits me well even though I am petite - it falls a few inches above the knees. There is soft fleece in the chest area and the pockets for extra warmth. The collar comes up high to keep the neck warm and the hood hugs the face to keep the wind out. Great for cold, northern climates yet lightweight and attractive enough so that you don't feel heavy, bogged down, and frumpy all winter. The quality seems very good - I expect to have this coat for a long time.

January 06, 2010

an extremely warm, mid thigh length down coat that is light and tailored so it looks great on. the drawstring at the waist seems a bit high (hits the bottom of my ribs when tightened) and i'm short. this is a very picky complaint, though! overall, i wouldn't trade this coat for any others out there. Warm, light, and comfy!
April 03, 2009

I was so ecstatic when I got this coat...it's super warm and lightweight. Plus it's really soft on the inside and the hood fits perfectly. My only advice is not to use that sizing chart because it is really off. I usually wear a size 2 -- I'm 5'2" and 113 lbs, so I went with an XS, according to the chart. But when I got it, it was really tight and the arms were just a tad bit short. I was able to exchange it for a S with no problem. Aubrey in Customer Service was very friendly and helpful!

Excellent warmth
December 28, 2011

I bought this coat on sale before moving to Scandinavia, and I have been more than pleased with how warm it is. I tried a number of different down coats before deciding on this one, and this one was the lightest and warmest option. Plus, there are no quills that poke through the material. The one real flaw that I have since discovered is that the hood is a little small (vertically). If I'm wearing a knit hat underneath the hood, it is a tight fit. Luckily, the hood is usually warm enough to wear without a hat (at least down to 0 degrees C, and I have a pretty low tolerance for cold, considering I hail from Los Angeles). As far as fashion is concerned, it IS a puffy jacket, so I guess I shouldn't expect too much. Still, I wish it had more waist definition and wasn't so big around the upper back. I'm 5'6" and 135lb and bought the medium. There's plenty of room for multiple layers and a thick sweater, though I've found that it is usually too warm to have more than 2 layers on underneath.

Love this coat
October 12, 2010

I have been looking for a long winter coat and this one meets my standards. I love it's versatility. I appreciate being able to remove both the hood and fur trim. It makes the coat perfect for early fall outings as well as winter. I really appreciate the fuzzy pockets that zip closed. Great for keeping my hands warm or my keys from getting lost. The hood can be adjusted easily for a snug fit around my head if it gets windy. My daughter recently tried mine on and loved it too. Maybe santa will bring her one.

Small details count.
February 10, 2009

From the cinchcord at the waist, the Yeti fleece vest inside to its possibly overlooked chin guard (in oh-so-lovely fleece), this jacket has so many great features that make this a top winter jacket - plus it's warm! The only fault is the cuff wrists; if it was with adjustable Velcro, that'll be perfect!

Perfect Down Girly Coat
January 01, 2010

This is my all-time favorite women's shaped down coat. I tried on many other competitor's versions before buying this one on Altrec and it's much lighter and less stiff then they were. The texture is amazing - just like another reviewer commented - "a luxury sleeping bag" is right. The internal fleece is amazing and it adds no bulk. How'd they do that? My perfect out and about coat in the Vermont winter that keeps me really toasty and looks great.

November 01, 2009

I had my eye on this jacket for awhile and finally got it this year. It is the best jacket. I really wanted to love this coat, but I sent it back for two reasons. The dark brown color was really not a very pretty color. I knew I would never be happy with it. There was no black size M available or I would have considered that. Secondly, the fur trim was fake. After traveling in Italy for a week and seeing absolutely everyone in a real fur trimmed hooded down coat, I think the manufacturer should consider using real fur next season.
