Great for layering
November 15, 2011
I first bought this sweater a year ago, and have worn it often. Just returned from a visit to London and could not have been happier with the perfect layering it provided. It is warm and not bulky: fits easily into a large purse and takes the edge off a cool day. It was so perfect that I ordered another upon my return. The only negative is that they changed the shade of blue lining the neck area on the dark blue sweater. The original was a beautiful, neutral pale blue and now it is an unattractive, bolder blue that makes it difficult to match with as many clothes.
Stylish sweater, slightly odd fit
September 07, 2011
Since it's still summer, I haven't worn it much yet, but this cardigan is very refined and stylish, and the wool blend is not too itchy. The purple color is gorgeous as well. I'm 5'7", 125 lb. and got the Small. Fits great in the waist and shoulders/arms, but is tight in the chest, so I won't be able to wear more than a thin layer underneath or zip it up all the way. (But a medium would have been far too big in the arms and baggy around the waist for my taste.) Those smaller chested than I might have better success. Overall though the positives outweigh any negatives.
Beautiful Cardigan !!
November 26, 2011
This cardigan has a very flattering fit and is even more gorgeous than the picture can show. I was pleasantly surprised by the interior of the cardigan which has a beautiful pattern and is soft against the skin. It's a must have for going about town !!

The soft materials are warm and light as well. It fits naturally on the waist. I am wearing it as a light weight base layer or as a sweater on warmer days. One thing I like about the color is that even it is black, you can notice some green lines.

This sweater is great. comfortable, warm, nicely fitted. I got the blue one and love the color. I've had if for months now and it's still my favorite sweater!
Warm and stylish.

Lovely cardigan, nicely designed collar and the inside lining in a different colour a very smart detail. It is warm without being heavy and seems to be of excellent quality. The pocket on the upper sleeve difficult to zip open, a lower pocket would have been more useful.
really nice sweater

trim fit, love the mp3 player/sleeve pocket - can't wait to wear it
October 17, 2011
Just bought my third Sarafin Cardigan. As with all Mountain Hardwear tops, I went up a size: I'm 5' 3", 102 lbs, and the small provides a trim but not tight fit for me. I've tried on the XS in this, and it is REALLY tiny with super-tight sleeves (and I have pretty skinny arms). Love the way you can dress this up or down; it's an indispensable part of my winter gear. Love the Snow color, new this year and hard to find. Thanks Altrec!
so so fit, nice colors
December 30, 2010
I agree with the person who said that this is tight around the arm holes. I had the small and returned it and got the medium for more arm and shoulder space, now it is a bit baggy in the bust and hips. Actually, if you look at the model, she has the baggy fit too. I will not return it since I can deal with a looser look on some of my clothes, and it is very comfy, but the fit is definitely not perfect. Will only use as casual wear, and I am OK with that. I must say that the colors are nice. I have seen the espresso one and it is very nice, I got the ice blue. Cypress one is a little too bright for me.
Had it a few months

So far so good! Bought this for the wife at Christmas. Her North Face equivalent was showing wear after some years. Went with MH after buying a jacket for myself which turned out to be great! Wife says it's pretty warm and form fitting. I am sure this will last just as long as her NF. She likes the full zipper - it's easier to get in and out of and she claims it is super light and great for air travel.

Grest Sweater. Stylish and functional. It is form fitting and love the length. Wish I could get it in all colors!
Versitile cardigan with lots of style
March 31, 2010
This wool cardigan can be dressed up or down, is soft and warm without the bulk of fleece, comes in trendy colors, offset with vibrant accent colors in the lining. I bought the Rhododendron and then the Ice Blue. Very fashionable, form fitting, zipper on sleeve is great for iPod.

First, the cut and material are great. As others pointed out, though, it runs really small. I am 115 lbs and the S fit like a glove with just a thin top underneath and no room under the arms. The one detail I really do not like is the chin guard. This may be great if your plan is always to zip the sweater all the way to your chin. I often wear cardigans -- esp. dressier ones -- not zipped up fully. This one has a zipper lining that shows all the way down. It precludes wearing the sweater with a nice top and a necklace or a decorative scarf. I'm keeping it anyway and having a friend fix the lining, but it seems like an unnecessary detail that only detracts from the otherwise beautiful design. The black cherry color is stunning.Pros: color and style, Cons: chin guard is ugly; runs really small

beautifully made sweater but it runs small. I am 5'3" and 112 lbs and I usually wear a small in Mountain Hardware but this sweater was very fitted. I am going to return it for a medium
Almost perfect sweater
October 12, 2013
Colors are lovely, fit is slimming. Sweater is warm without being thick. Only quibble is that the pockets tend to gap because they lack a snap or button to hold them to the body of the sweater, and this tends to make those of us who are not tall and slender look heftier. I have short arms, but the sleeves roll up nicely around the ribbon trim on the bottom for a nice contrast. The pockets are a minor quibble. Better pockets than not. That quibble is so minor that I have it in three colors.
December 21, 2011
I love the sweater. Sleeves are nice and long. I am tall so this is good for me. Nice quality. Very soft. Machine washed very nicely...maintaining its shape. Like the soft green highlights.
Good quality but nothing special
February 06, 2013
This is the first Mountain Hardware item I have not LOVED. The material is substantial but rather scratchy; the fit is okay but nothing special. For the price, I would expect a lot more. This one went back ;-(Pros: warm, Cons: scratchy
My Go-to Cardigan
November 10, 2011
I have worn this cardigan almost daily since I received it. I've received numerous compliments on it and it does look good! It is very comfortable and stylish. It doesn't look anything like your typical cardigan. It has more of an active, outdoorsy chic vibe going on. I ordered it in navy which looks great with jeans and kakis. I am 5' 8" and 125 lbs. and the small fits as though it was tailored for me. Ordering it in small does not allow room for much more than a t-shirt or waffle weave henley to be worn underneath. It is the perfect weight and warmth for our fall weather and mild winters here in Texas. I like it so much I'm ordering one for my son's girlfriend for Christmas.
December 27, 2011
I purchased this sweater for my wife and she is very happy with it. When it arrived I was very pleased with the quality. The fabric is thin, yet very heavy and the wool material will be perfect for a wide range of conditions. The color is also very nice and as described in the photo, and the fit is perfect on my wife. I would recomend this product to anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
Beautiful casual sweater
January 19, 2011
This is a beautiful sweater for casual wear. I replaced my fleece jacket with this as it looks more "pulled together". The blue color is lovely. To get the appropriate arm length (I am 6ft tall) I had to go to a size L which means the sweater is a bit baggy in the fit (I normally wear 8-10 body size). It is very comfortable. I am happy with the purchase!
December 28, 2012
Lightweight and warm, just a beautiful sweater! I love the look and the feel and its accommodating enough to layer. So happy to have this for these Upstate NY winters!
warm and stylish
October 15, 2011
I own previous versions of the this sweater and I still think they are excellent warm sweaters. I purchased the sweater in snow and I love the color. I can wear it alone with a light layer underneath for the fall season temperatures. The fit is close but not tight. The wool is slightly itchy but if I wear a long sleeve underneath, I do not feel the wool. The sweater washes well, minimal shrinkage if any. I wash it in the machine wash, gentle cycle and hang dry. The only drawback is the cost. A little pricey, but if you can get it on sale or use the Altrec discount, the sweater is worth it. I purchased the sweater with the hoody in addition to the cardiagan style and I am satisfied as well.
fits well and keeps you warm
September 10, 2011
I borrowed my sister's shirt like this to ski in. I'm very cold natured and have a hard time staying warm. Plus I live in Florida. Well, I stayed toasty all day long. When I returned the shirt I told her, "if you ever buy me another gift, please make it this shirt!". She remembered, so for my birthday this year she bought me this shirt. I still love it! and plan to get many years of wear out of it.
Green not Gray
March 07, 2011
I love these Mountain Hardware Sarafin sweaters. With two knitted tones of color to each sweater, I have all the different colors that are offered. However, FYI...even though in this .com catalog, the black sweater shows a gray colored collar it is really a bright green that shows loudly underneath the body when worn...not gray as expected. I was surprised and disappointed. Had to return but still kept the Blue Ice and the Cypress...already had the Espresso and Nebiola (purple.) They maintain well if you take care of them properly. Perfect for layering and not a fleece piece! I vote yes!
Best Sweater Ever!
December 21, 2011
Yes, it's my second one. I love this color, Iris Glow is deep and understated. I'm 5'3 and 128 lbs. And the Small fit snug, so I bought a size up to wear over bulkier shirts. Medium fits great because it is so nicely tailored and flattering! It's a pretty lightweight sweater; but deceptively warm. The texture on the outside is a smooth knit but the inside is fleecy and cozy. What a perfect combo. I have had many compliments from my friends and strangers often ask where I bought it. It's worth the extra bucks to own the perfect sweater!
Favorite Winter Sweater
January 02, 2011
I love this sweater! I own two of them so far. It's super warm, very comfortable and fits true to size. Easy to care for...just wash and wear. It's durable and holds up well after many washings and wearings. Great with just a thermal underneath when I'm treking around town on a cold winter's afternoon. I'm a fan of Mountain Hardwear's clothing. Looks great under my sub-zero MH jacket. Altrec is great. This was my first purchase with them. Super fast shipping. I love this store. Lots of cool clothing.
Very comfortable and warm
September 29, 2008
I love this cardigan. It fits perfectly and goes with everything. Mountain hardwear products are always of good quality and this has not changed. I love it. Wish I could afford one in every color.
March 03, 2013
This is a black sweater; it is nice, but really overpriced ( even at sale price) for what it is. The sleeves are long, and ought to have thumb holes; the collar has been lowered from the previous incarnation, not a good change, in my opinion. It has pockets, but no sippers to keep them closed and flat.... I'm not sure why this garment costs so much, as its fitted styling is pretty common in fitness clothing these days; maybe the fabric is the big deal...? Just talked myself into sending it back.....
Favorite Mountain Hardware Sweater

This is one of the best sweaters for women. I buy a new one each year in a different color. Plus I get many compliments and it goes with everything.
Greatest Sweater - Luv Mountain Hardwear
March 13, 2013
I love this sweater! I have another Sarafin that I bought 3 years ago. I am always somewhere between a medium and a large (because I like things a little roomier for layering) - this years' medium is a little roomier on me but still a nice, trim fit. I really like the new fit better. The sleeves are a little long - but hey most are on me. I also love the fact that the sweater is nice looking - not too young and not old lady.
Sarafin Cardigan -well fitting
July 05, 2011
The Sarafin cardigan has many uses - a lightweight outdoor layer or warm indoor layer. It is "mist-proof". It fits very well (Small, for 5'6" 120 lbs), nipped in at the waist, which makes it dressy enough for work. The two-tone colors on the trim (neck, sleeves) are a pretty touch. This is so much more than a casual fleece layer. My daughter also has one (XS) that she wore constantly in winter/spring, and wears in the summer to ward off air conditioning chill. It can be worn over a tank top - bare arms are no problem, the wool blend is not scratchy. It washes easily and well.
Great looking, warm sweater
August 24, 2011
The Sarafina cardigan is exactly the quality and cool style you'd expect. I've worn the Sarafina pullover sweater for several years, and when I saw the cardigan on sale, I couldn't pass it up! The cardigan in purple is a rich color with a dressy or casual look. The cardigan is cut slightly smaller than the Sarafina pullover through the chest, so you may want to go up a size if you like your sweaters looser or want to wear multiple layers underneath. Great buy!!!!
October 20, 2009
I LOVE this cardigan. It is somewhat dressy with all the comfort of a sweatshirt! I am thinking of ordering another color. It will be very versatile. It's much more "stylish" than the picture makes it look. The fit skims the body without being tight. I wore a cami under it. True to size if you are looking for body conscious without being tight!
November 20, 2009
finally someone is making an "active wear" top/sweater/light jacket that is fitted to the shape of women. this is it! it is lovely the way it follows the contours in a natural way. it is not a box! the color stands up nicely, is warm and cozy. love the contrasting ribbed areas on the sides and the wide ribbing at the base. so pleased with it i am buying a second one in another color. thank you mountain hardwear for great design and superb functionality!
fashion and function
February 09, 2009
Nice snug fit so doesn't bulk up under a jacket, thoughtful non wool piping on neck keeps chin from getting itchy. Would like holes for thumbs in long sleeves though.
March 19, 2011
Warm, flattering fit and stylish.....nice soft lining. I can wear it around town or backpacking. The color options go with anything I have. It doesn't pick up lint or dog hair easily which is great for our home with dogs. I can grab this sweater and just run out the door. It fits with any situation where I need something light to keep warm or great for layering because it has a snug fitted fit.
nice styling but....
January 05, 2008
This really runs small and tight in the arms and armholes. I ALWAYS wear XS - and in this sweater, the armholes are so tight that they were uncomfortable. A SM in the sweater is too large in the bust, waist, and sleeve length is too long, so ordering up a size doesn't fix the problem. Too bad ---
