MSR DragonFly Stove

Big backcountry stove performance doesn't have to weigh in at a lot of extra ounces. The MSR DragonFly™ Stove offers exceptional flame control and large supports for holding big diameter pots and pans. This is a great stove for large groups or generous cooking proportions on climbing and backpacking trips. The dual-valve CoolFuel™ gives you a fine-control advantage over ordinary liquid fuel burners, so you can simmer sauces instead of the classic scorch and torch routine. Liquid fuel stoves are an excellent choice for cooking in cold temperatures. Depending on altitude and temperatures, a twenty-ounce fuel bottle of MSR white gas will burn for a 126-minute average.

  • Dual-valve CoolFuel™ for excellent flame control
  • Extended pot supports accommodate large pots and skillets--great for large groups
  • White gas boil time for 1 liter at sea level in 70F conditions: 3.5 min.
  • Minimum configured weight: 14 oz. (395 g.)
  • Packaged weight: 18 oz. (510 g.)

Just meet the needs for rice cooking.
I used to cook rice while camping. To make it a good meal, you'll have to use a stove that could well control its flame. This stove is just the one I'm looking for. It do have excellent flame control, which make it a better choice for me than the XGK EX stove.

I'm happy
I expected just what I got. I wanted stability (no fear of boiling pots falling over), clear instructions, engineering "common sense". Great service from Altrec - quick response. This will be a great stove for my needs in the BWCA.

As near to perfect as it gets
I've logged over 5K miles backpacking and own many stoves. If I had to choose one this would be it! Sure it's a bit noisy. One tentmate on a winter snoeshoe trip in WA complained about the noise, but loved the quesadillas it made!I can bake a pizza easy with my outbake oven or let it roar when I need a fast boil! Even when I go lite weight this stove goes with me. On a long distance hike food is very important! When I figure burn time vs weight ratio I'll take the Dragoonfly over even an pop can alcohol stove. I like coffee & a hot breakfast in the am. The burn temp & boil time of alcohol requires so much fuel.

Cranking stove!
I've done my share of back country trips that require some lightweight and rugged gear. It was hard giving up my Svea stove but I am glad that I did! This stove clearly out performs other backpacking stoves. Very stabe, easy to operate and compact. You can't go wrong with this one!

The last stove you ever need
I have been using this stove in the Pacific Northwest for many years without a problem. It is a little loud but the benefits of an all around great stove make up for this.

Best Stove Ever
I've used many. The only knock is the roar. But it's not called a "whimperlight", for God's sake, " dragon" is in the name. What did you expect? This stove has worked for me for 7 years. I had to fix it once, and that was incredibly easy, I did it in the field with no problems. A true gem, easy to operate and quick to boil. Best stove ever.

More than happy with this stove...
I've been more than happy with my MSR Dragonfly. It's the only stove I've ever owned, but please don't let that discredit my opinion. I've read every review on just about every liquid fuel stove out there and it seems like the only credible negative to the Dragonfly is it's weight (the other one being the noise, who cares, helps you find camp while your out "relieving" yourself in the woods). I drive a Jeep Liberty CRD (it's a diesel so I wanted a stove that could run on diesel also for that just in case moment). The flame control is amazing on this stove, I can melt snow in a matter of seconds or boil enough water for coffee, freeze dried meals, or purifying in just a few minutes. My only question about the stove is what is the purpose of the cotton that comes in it? I've left mine in and see no downside, I'm guessing it's to absorb fuel and allow a smoother burn (similiar to an alcohol stove) but I'm not sure.

Definitely worth the money!
Pros: 1. Takes pretty much any combustible fuel (white gas, kerosene, unleaded auto fuel, diesel, and jet fuel) so you have freedom of international travel 2. Super fuel efficient—used it on 2-night trip @ hight altitude & must have melted ~10 liters of snow/ice on an 85% full 22-ounce bottle & there was still a good quarter of white gas left at the end of the trip 3. Diameter of stove legs larger than most stoves (~ 6.5 inches) so pot/stove stability not an issue Cons: 1. Definitely will wake up the neighbors (or bears)—roars like a rocket! 2. A little over a pound (vs Snow peak giga, MSR simmerlite & smaller models @ ~ 3ounces to half a pound) 3. Needs priming—not that big of a deal but I’m testing out the Jetboil, which doesn’t need priming at all, so just a comparison Tips: 1. Keep fuel bottle constantly pressurized while cooking (if flame begins to flicker/sputter while cooking, just give the bottle a few pumps even while the stove is on to restore flame consistency) 2. Use the heat reflector/wind screen. I used to not carry them, but noticed a big improvement on cooking/boiling time, fuel conservation & heat distribution, especially when using bigger pots (ie 2-liter pot; w/o it, you get uneven heating on pot sides & areas not in direct contact with stove legs—unless you want to sit there and stir it all night. I just use the reflector + screen now & let it simmer while setting up camp) 3. Shake the stove after each use—the shaker jet cleans out any debris build up. I’ve had my stove for 2 years, & it hasn’t required any maintenance—good as the day I got it. 4. Buy generic white gas (Coleman’s @ Wal-Mart) since the MSR brand gas is marked up almost twice has much!

Speedy boil times and super flame control.
I ahve used this stove for 2 years with absolutely no problems. The only real maintenance I've done is replace one fuel line filter. On cold winter trips the stove is easily used with gloves. It is loud when turned to full burn but it's a small sacrafice when the snow is flying and you've got a hot drink in mere minutes. It's also a little bulkier than some stoves but unlike hiking partners I have never spilled my dinner because the pot supports were inadequate. If I ever have to replace this stove I won't even consider another model, this stove has never failed and I wouldn't risk investing in any other stove.

Great for Motorcycle Camping
I like primitive camping of sort as this is the best addition yet. I camp off my motorcycle, and now i can use the unlead fuelout my bike to run my stov4 and yes the AutoStart Stove Igniter will mount on the inlet tube of this. Screw off the neddle flame adjustment then put in on the line the srew neddle valve back in line to burner bend end of lighter to 45 degree downwards to ark off bottom. Lights in wind now :) NO MATCHES! You will see the end of the lighter sides in slot when stove is opened up it falls in place. I can send a pic if you can't figure this out.

Almost perfect
As it's used for jungle trekking in Borneo (actually East Malaysia) I needed something that runs well on any fuel and as light as possible. I tried another brand that had a built in steel reservoir, great flame, economical but too many hard sharp edges in the rucsack and too heavy. The Dragonfly has been the perfect replacement, seriously light and compact, came with little repair kit/spares for field servicing (instructions not waterproof though) and yes, it's noisey (keeps snakes away!) but works a treat. The flare up when cold is because it uses a little spurt of liquid fuel, my old stove just wouldn't light after being caught in the rain, the DF doesn't care, it lights. It's squat, stable, you DON'T burn your hand on pots adjusting the flame, a very well thought out product. Just leave it on minimum for a mo to warm up before cranking it, or you WILL get a big yellow flare. Leaks? Not been a problem after 6 trips :o) Only needs about 10 or 15 easy pumps, there's no need to break it!

Great product!
This is the first backpacking stove that I have ever owned. When I went into a backpacking store and was looking for advice, the Dragonfly was recommended to me. He said that this is the most popular selling stove. Anyways, I love the way that you can control the flame on it. I like to do more than boil water, so I thought this to be an essential characteristic. I have only used white fuel, so I don't know how any others work. It's easy to start, it's lightweight, very compact, and it's easy to store. I have had no problems with the pump. The only drawback to the whole thing is that it is kind of noisy. I knew this before I bought, and it doesn't bother me that much, but others just can't handle it.

Great stove
I live in the Philippines (tropical weather). I took this stove out camping near the sea and it works very well. good flame control. The stove can boil water pretty quick and it can be brought down to a very low simmer. I cooked rice for three people using this stove. I hear a lot of people saying that it is really loud. It is loud but it doesn't bother me. I like having that sound because you know you have a fire going there, not just fuel spilling all over the stove. The only down side to it is that a slight breeze will make the fire flicker even when on full blast. So the windscreen has to be used all the time. Over all... I like the performance of the stove and great service from altrec.com. I would recommend this stove.

Works Great So Long as You Follow Directions!
Stove setup was very easy. I used kerosene (which is a bit slow to light) to fuel the stove. The first time I used it I made a [stupid] mistake by not adequately pressurizing the fuel bottle which caused kero to trickle out creating a " bonfire". It looked like my stove was going up in flames but after shutting everything down and letting it cool off, I tried it again and got it right. I must say I had no problem with the stove even though it was absolutely caked with kero soot. My only question/problem is this: why doesn't MSR have some sort of way to latch the windscreen together? Or do they and I'm just not seeing it? I was thinking of either using a paper clip to secure it or buying some velcro and attaching it to the windscreen. I'm not sure that will work but I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

Stove has personality
A great workhorse but one that requires a lot of fuel. At sea level it works great at all settings, but at altitude and in below freezing conditions has always performed less than stellarly. Even with new, clean fuel the stove has a propensity to flareup when cold. After a couple of years and a few trips, the stove pump started leaking fuel between the housing and the regular, which couldn't be fixed by changing the O-ring. Can't be beat though as a stove for the gourmand.
