Fit Tip: This item is semi-fitted. Item fits true to design, and has room for range of motion and comfort.
Mountain Hard Wear's Convertible Pack Pants are perfect travel companions under partly cloudy skies or in regions where nippy mornings serve up sunbaked afternoons. Unlike most convertible travel pant designs this one has reinforced seat and knees, making it better suited for trekking in isolated areas where tailors rarely tread. The seamless conical waist is chamois-lined, so it feels better than most traditionally cut backpacking pants, especially if you're bearing a heavy pack. If you're headed to dusty and dirty places, consider the Mountain Hard Wear Pack Pant--it doesn't convert like this one, but it does offer many of the same features and fabric.
Sweet pants
I ordered 2 pair, one for me and one for my dad. Sorry dad, but I'm keeping both pair! I'm 6'3" and the regular length works fine. Chamois around the was is great, double material on knees is great too! I own Aigle, columbia, north face, and magellan zip off's but these are my fave!
best convertible pants out there
The Mountain Hardwear Convertible Pack Pant is a top notch piece of clothing for all sorts of outdoor use in all climates. I have put them to the test in Alaska (Summer, Fall), in the Southwest US (all seasons), and in Florida (all seasons). The pants are comfortable and extremely durable. They are the only pair of pants you need on a backpacking trip. They dry quickly. They are somewhat thicker than other brands' convertible pants and offer some wind protection and greater durability. They make nice shell pants over all weights of long johns. In winter, they wear well over expedition weight baselayer to create a very warm duo in temps down to the teens. So you can leave the insulated pants at home. They are so durable that I haven't even a single fray in the fabric after dozens of day and multiday hikes bushwacking through brushy desert, tundra, and Florida scrub. I liked the first pair so much, that I have added two more to the collection over the years. Been wearin' them since 2004 on all outdoor excursions except prescribed burning (because nylon melts at a relatively low temperature). Get these pants, and then get another pair for use when the others are in the laundry pile.

comfortable, great fit and functional pants
These pants are great!! I always wore northface convertable pants, but not anymore. These pants are better quality and are more comfortable. Only negative is no side pockets as the northface has.
Hard to beat
These convertible pants ae hard to beat, really durable fabric, dries fast, has great pocket options, clips for keys, knife, zipper inside pockets to keep from loosing small stuff. I own 3 pairs! wouldn't buy anything different.
Great fit and comfortable
This is my third pair of convertible pants and the Mt Hardwear are superior to the other brands I have worn. Very well made and a great fit. Thanks for making a short (30") length.
Great for backpacking
Excellent features for hiking and backpacking. Chamois liner makes them extremely comfortable around the waist. Availability in various lengths is a big plus as well. Buy two pair - they are great
Well designed and comfortable
I haven't yet hiked is these pants, but so far the testing I've done for an upcoming Eastern Sierra hike have shown them to be very comfortable, sturdy, but not to heavy. The waist is particularly well designed, as are the ankle zips. I had a little problem with the pullcord at the ankle and the front pockets are to short, but those are minor design flaws. Comfortabilty can be an issue on a week long backpacking trip so I'll give them the 5 stars for that.
Great pants
Super durable and the lining on the waist makes these pants superior to all others I've tried. I also love the fact Mtn Hardwear makes a Medium Long
Excellent pants
These pants are the most comfortable hiking pants that I have owned. They easily convert to shorts.
Convertible Pack Pants
These pants are light weight, very comfortable and fit well. Not that I need to however, these pants are so great I am going to purchase another pair.
These really ARE great
Several cuts above the North Face Paramount Convertible in quality and fit. Of course, they cost about 1/3 more, too. But these are really the top-of-the line trekking pants I've seen.
The only pants that work.
I am a slight person with no hips who has to over tighten any pack hip belt. These are the only hiking pants I have ever worn that do not rub me raw under my belt. The waist area is built with low profile components so there is nothing to chafe. The pockets are intelligently designed so you can actually use them while wearing a pack. The pair I bought is dark green which beats the heck out of the usually khaki or black. My only complaint (and it is a very small one) is that the front pockets are quite shallow.
One pair of pants is all you need!
Fit was accurate and the material they are made of is great. It is almost impossible to get them dirty and if you do then they are easy to wash and dry quickly. Great backpacking and travel pants.
Very happy so far
I wore these pants while traveling and vacationing in the Los Cabos area after xmas. They were very comfortable on the airplane. Back pocket held 5 passports comfortably. The length of the med size were good for 5'10" me. Will try them out hiking summer, anticipate they will be great.
Excellent for hiking and travel
I purchased these pants as a gift for my dad. He called back to say that the fit was excellent. In spite of all the little features, they did not look overly like "safari pants" and still could be worn to restaurants, etc. He was able to easily take them on/off over his shoes on a plane. I met him for a hiking trip this fall, and he wanted to wear them every day. They are by far the best hiking pants he has owned.
Going on the Trail in March
These pants will be going on the AT with me in March. I almost hope for cold weather longer so I can keep these on. The padded hip area is very nice and they fit and wear well. Nice looking too.
The best hiking camping and backpacking pants
These are the best outdoor pants going. I've tried many and wear these. They're so practical and comfortable I've lately even favored them over jeans for casual wear. The fabric stands alone as particularly supple and tough, washes well, and they are majestically not burdened by overdesign, such as too many pockets/seams/fiddly things -- just has what one needs on the trail and no more. The waist feels transparent under a pack harness, and the back pockets in particular are well designed -- one can easily reach into them with a full pack on. Keychain clip, zipper pocket for loose things, cuffs can be cinched, lower leggings easily removed or pulled over boots. Can't recommend highly enough.
little room for improvement
After many months of use, this is my best all around pair of pants. The only two suggestions I would have are: To provide a small patch of fabric to cover the zippers at the bottom of the cuffs and I have had some problem with the belt buckle not holding in place. Excellent pants otherwise!

Excellent fit and wear!
Very comfortable fit.
Versitile Hiking Pants
These pants are perfect not only for hiking, but for traveling to places with in hot climates as well. I went on a cruise to Ensanada if you get off the boat you are required to carry your passport. The right side has a pocket with a zipper that is large enough to hold your passport and can hold some extra cash. Also, these pants are light weight, water resistant and the material is strong enough to hike through brush without snagging.
Tough,but comfortable.
The first time you slide into these pants ,the fit feels great for the long hikes.
2nd pair of great pants
This is my second pair of Mountain Hardwear Men's Convertible Pack Pants. I've got four years on the first pair and they are still great but wanted a second pair for another multi-sport vacation. The price at Altrec was so much cheaper than my original purchase that I couldn't pass up the opportuntity to own a second pair. Great durability, fit, price and value, not to mention the speedy service Altrec provides.
I think I could become accustomed to these!
While I lament the passing of the standard Pack Pants - and have always felt that 'convertible' pants looked goofy - after taking a pair of these out for a couple of days where the temps were between 30-81 degrees F, I have to say that I certainly think I'll come to love them. They zip off and on quickly and easily, have all the features of the defunct Pack Pants and Shorts and although I only bought 4 pair, I think they they will become daily wear - not just trail wear - and that I'll more soon. Zippers are very lightweight yet easy to operate and - like everything from Mountain Hardwear - the design and function is superb.
Best hiking pants
These pants are great. I wore them when I went hiking in the Adirondacks this summer and they were great. Very comfortable and I like that you can actaully use the back pockets with a pack on. You can also wear them around town and not look like a complete Dork.
Very well built pant
This pant has some nice features like the chamois liner. It does need another zippered pocket though, preferably on the rear of the pants. They are built really well with bar tacks where needed and look like they will last the long haul. As far as the inseam goes, they are a perfect fit over hiking boots for my 34" inseam. They could be a little long for any shorter of an inseam with boots. They were a great deal on-sale at Altrec and well worth it but they may be just a little too expensive at full retail when you compare them to all the other pants available.
Feel great!
These pants are great! I bought a pair of these on sale somewhat by accident (not at Altrec), but now I wear the pair I have all the time. Pros: heavyweight and durable, fits well. The dark sage is great for hiding dirt and other "stuff". Cons: no (large) secure pocket. You can lose things while crawling around in the tent or sitting in a chair (when used in the urban wilderness). In any case, I'd love to have another pair, and I'm looking for a similar pant which isn't convertible.
Great Pants...Length is longer than specifications
I have two pairs of these pants and one pair of the shorts. They are my favorite pants/shorts for backpacking. The micro fleece around the waist really helps if you wear your pack belt tight when carrying large loads. There are lots of extra features like small zip pockets, key holder, ankle snaps, etc... I highly recommend these pants.
Mountain Hardware Pack Pants
A great pack pant! The soft lining in the waist and crotch are well appreciated after a day's hike with a backpack. I bought these pants because in having worn several other types for backpacking, these are the only ones that don't dig in to the skin under a backpack hip belt. Legs unzip easily and can be removed without taking off hiking boots. Zipper stash pocket keeps valuables from getting lost. Fast drying fabric can dry overnight. Worth the price!
Great Pants!
These pants are fantastic. They have padding in just the right places (where your hip belt will go) are superbly stitched and look great. They even come with a matching nylon belt!Highly recommended!
Great fit and durability.
I love these pants. They are comfortable with or without a pack and are bombproof in very rugged conditions. Highly recommended and worth the high price.
You get what you pay for and then some. Mountain Hardwear has always delivered for me. I have used my existing Mountain Hardwear Convertible Pack Pants for the last three years up and down the Appalachian Trail throughout New England. I wear them as everyday pants, hiking, backpacking, and presently to my physical therapy sessions for my newly reconstructed knee. The ability to carry all kinds of gadgets, gear, and right now-bottles of sports drinks, while on my crutches. I have had pants from The North Face, and others, and none compare in quality and durability to Mountain Hardwear pants!!! Thanks Mountain Hardwear.PS: I ski in a Mountain Hardwear Backcountry Recon Jacket 60 days a season. whtmt & Mackenzie 911
MH never fails
As always Mountain Hardwear delivers. These shorts are full of the little extras that show somebody who has actually been outside put some thought into designing these pants. The legs zip off and on very easily, even while wearing them. Side zippers allow them to be put on or taken off over boots. They look good enough for wear in a restaurant, are light weight, dry quickly and are just a good thing to have along. Good deal.
Super Product!
The most comfortable pants I own. Durable construction, lots of convenience features and pockets. Dry very fast and very light to wear even in the heat of Florida. Would buy any Mountain Hardwear product without hesitation. Excellent store with great customer service! Thanks, Altrec!
Better than expected
These are probably the best general purpose hiking pants out there. They are light, comfortable and well made. I've seen some complaints about these pants being too long, but they seem to fit even my short legs pretty well. Recommended.
Nice Pants!
Very comfortable...Wear them just around the house..Biking,hiking, or just walking the dog.
Nice Pants!
Very comfortable. There not only great for backpacking or hiking, but enjoy wearing them biking or just around the house. Fabric is quick drying and doesnt get snagged up on brush when hiking through the woods.
Awesome!
These pants are pretty wonderful. My only complaint is that the shorts are a little too short. Other than that, these are definitely a good buy.
great pants
great pants, well made, Mountain Hardware quality. Pants have many cool features, also fit great and are comfortable.
Great pants with one minor exception...
I wore these pants on my trip down to Grand Gulch, Utah and they were very comfortable. I really liked the light weight of the fabric which kept me cool throughout the day as we traveled through the gulch. I really like the inner front pocket on the right side that I could zip up to store smaller items without worrying about losing them as I hiked. The only thing that I didn't really like about the pants was height of the zip off legs. I wish they were a little lower. They zip off about mid thigh on me and I prefer that they'd be closer to the knee. Overall though, a great pair of pants.
Pricey but good
I've only taken these pants on a trip to S. Mexico so they have yet to be truly trail tested but after 2 weeks of no washing and wearing every day they were as comfy as if they just came out of the drier and contained the funk from the junk lest I offend. They are cut great too. I always have a problem of getting convert pants that rub the knees when I'm hiking but not with these bad boys. My only suggestion is to put some drainage holes in the pockets for those who like to swim and don't want the hassle of an extra article of clothing. All around good product, if not a bit pricey.
comfy and durable
Overall great pants. Nice fit, comfortable and durable material. The non elastic waste is great and the unique rear pockets make it easy to get at stuff on trail. The only complaints I have is are the short inseam of the shorts and the construction of the front pockets -- be careful what you put in these pockets because items often fall out when you sit.
great outdoor pants!
These are the cats meow of outdoor pants. Mine are new, but they seem very durable. They have great pockets, including a nice little zippered pocket inside the front for keeping valuables safe. I'd give these five stars if the shorts were a little longer. Feels like the eighties all over again. I doubt if the legs will ever be removed. If you have a 30-32" inseam and 32"-33# waist, get the mediums, because the larges are about a 34" length. I also discovered that they work well with bikes that have no chain guard. Highly recommended overall.
A classic
Excellent all-around & comfortable. You will not feel the shorts zipper. Washes out easily. A little long.
Great Fit
I really like the pants. Easy to zip on and off and great fit with a pack. A little bit long, but otherwise recommended.
Awesome pants, but too long
I have worn trekking pants by The North Face, Spyder, Marmot, and Mtn. Hardware, and I can say these are by far the most comfortable pants I have ever worn. The chamois around the waist is heavenly, and they are cut well for movement. The only complaint I have is that they claim to have a 32" inseam, but they're a good 2" longer than all my other pants that also have 32" inseams. So they bunch up a little on the boots. If you have short legs, they may not be a good choice. Otherwise, they are awesome!
Fits like a glove with fingers too long!
Fits like a glove, with the fingers too long. The inseam should have optional lengths for those of us under 6 ft. specially when used with hiking boots that have higher tops which shorten the required pant leg length. The advertised 32 inch inseam could easily accomodate a 34 inch leg if worn with hiking boots.
