Created specifically for hiking, backpacking and remote trekking, the Katadyn Exstream XR Purifier Bottle features an internal EPA-registered Virustrat cartridge and carbon filter to remove microorganisms and all viruses from any water source. This 34-oz. bottle weighs less than the lightest backcountry microfilters and doesn't require pumping, making it perfect for extended day hikes and summer mountaineering around questionable water sources. One thing to consider is that the filter and cartridge require a bit more work than sipping from a standard water bottle--but the extra safety measure will keep you healthier miles beyond the nearest trailhead or outpost.

I do alot of backpacking from the AT to the OT to the PCT, and sometimes you want to go as light and hassle free as possble.
Just this weekend for 4 days the Winter weather in the Ouachita Mountains in SE OK/SW AR suddenly became Fall. Lo's lower 50's and Hi's upper 70's. So I packed light and fast.
The traffic on the trail is nil this time of year and all water sources were running fresh with a recent all-day rain.
So I ditched the Lexan water bottle and the purifying gear and just relied on my new Extream XR Bottle.
And another thought: the XR vs the non-XR version with filter inserted gives you a full liter of drinking water.

This water bottle has been a great investment for me, the people I hike with thinks it funny because I call it my dip & sip I am Hiking the 900 miles of the smokies and I refill at ever creek crossing and I always have cold water.

Mine has been really great for backpacking around the world. You can use water from virtually any source and you don´t leave a trail of empty plastic bottles behind you. Simple and easy to use.

I bought this as a backup and for day hikes. It's so much work I'd rather just carry my hiker. It has to be primed by squeezing two bottles of water through it and that's no easy process. Then it has to sit for two hours. Finally the water has a strong Iodine taste - I hate that. But it does work used it on a day long hike. If you can live with the above deficiciencies go for it.
