Fit Tip: This item is semi-fitted. Item fits true to design, and has room for range of motion and comfort.
From Cheakamus to Chile, the Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody is the proven and popular softshell middle layer for technical climbing, hiking and backpacking. Essentially it's the hooded version of the award-winning Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket, with the same warm and lightweight Polartec® Power Shield fabric in an identical athletic cut. The fabric features a special DWR finish that keeps moisture away from your skin on misty mornings and foggy ascents. Unlike most so-called performance fleece, Polartec® Power Shield fabric is exceptionally resilient to wear and won't snag like other material. Gear and gadget freaks will appreciate the five storage pockets, including a laminated sleeve pocket sized for a two-way radio. Interior front zipper wind flaps and an adjustable hem drawcord help seal out cool breezes. Don't be surprised if you find yourself wearing the Gamma MX Hoody throughout the rest of the year.
Great Buy
Awesome Jacket , great quality , great looks. I was expecting something a little thicker. The hoody is big enough to use with a climbing helmet. Great overall jacket
everything you need to climb and to Hike Winters
this jacket has a slim fit which minimalizes bulk very well- I have used it to winter trail run and also to wear under a shell for snowboarding- it feels like a dream, fits well, sheds water, blocks much wind and looks great- sadly now made in China not BC but qulaity still seems good- for more wind block check the signma ar and also the sigma SV
nice-simply and perfectly
fabric is awesome,, great for high output- not a warm shell- a great windblocker and bacsic hooded softshell to guard you from elements- atheletic fit- buy it for its purpose and you cannot find a better climbing shell- to go to the mall look to north face :)

Best jacket I have ever owned
This jacket is awesome. Warm, breathable, good water resistence, cut is really nice. Loads of pockets too. Easy to wear as a middle layer on really cold treks, but outstanding as an outer layer around town.
Amazingly versatile jacket.
This jacket does it all, it's stretchy and breathable yet water resistant and wind proof and it adds a bit of warmth. As with all Arc'teryx hoods the adjustability is unmatched. You will end up wearing this jacket everywhere it's that versatile. Besides being a very technical piece it's good looking too, I get complements all the time on mine. They do run snug so if you're planning to fit an insulating layer underneath for winter activities size up.
Great jacket!
I like the snug, tailored fit and style. It's just as at home in urban settings as in technical settings. The hood fits over a helmet, and when fully zipped, it snugs under your chin if you happened to forget a neck warmer. Nicely constructed, great seams and zippers.
Amazing
Great for skiing, mountaineering, around town use. I bought it to replace a Patagonia Scythe jacket - this feels better designed by leaps and bounds. Arc'Teryx seems to have a slimmer fit, which I prefer.
Great Jacket
This jacket is everything as advertised. You can tell the quality of the jacket without even putting it on. Once on, it will not disappoint.
smooooth!
You get what you pay for with this jacket. Though I haven't put it through any extreme tests yet, I can say that the quality, workmanship, fit, feel & styling are all superb. As was mentioned, it takes layering easily without excess fabric. Also feels good next-to-skin. A strong wind barely permeates the membrane & helps to eliminate clamminess.
very warm, lightweight
very warm, lightweight
EXCELLENT!!!
THE JACKET ROCKS!
awesome coat
this Jacket fits great and allows your body to breathe. I have worn it to hike ridgelines for soem backcountry skiing, and it doesnt overheat you while hiking, but still keeps you warm while skiing. Arc Teryx just does a great job making quality products
GREAT JACKET, LOVE THE HOOD
used to have a a gamma mx regular jacket, and that was greatt, but after upgrading to this jacket, its just awesome, great warmth for hiking backcountry and keeps you warmer than you think once your skiing.
expensive but worth it.
Gamma MX Hoody = the best of the best.
This jacket is the best i ever bought in my life for climbing and hiking and snowshoeing.
It is very breathable and fairly windproof, and also protect very well against a light rain or snow.
I tested during a snowshoeing trip and had very good result with it in a multi-layer system.
I just used to wear an Arc'teryx Rho LTW Zip Top shirt as a base layer and a polartec 100 under it when it is cold . Always perfect never too hot or too cold.
Very good overall qualities
Terrific Piece of Gear
I was looking for a soft-shell with a hood for winter mountaineering: both for when you are starting out on a cold day and need to get warmed up, or when you get to the summit and need slip on something warm (wind, summit temps) and breathable (because you'be sweating on the way up) that gives you some head protection. I bought this over the holidays, and just used the piece this weekend in the Adirondacks, and it was perfect. We had single digit (F) temps at the base, and it helped me warm up at the start without overheating (before being put in the pack); then donned again on at the summit, where the temps were compounded by 25 mph winds, and this jacket kept me feeling perfectly comfortable for the brief period I was up top. Pricey, but I would have to say it was really worth it.
warm

One Great jacket!!!
This is one of the best craftmanship, best quality, and best investment I have made for a Soft shell jacket. It is a bit pricey, but it worths every penny.

da best
Being Canadian and having lived in Vancouver where Arcteryx is made I like to support the local Canadian businesses. I have several garments made by this company and have worn many others in the past like North Face, Mountain Hardware etc. Arcteryx sets the standard bar none and every other outdoor wear company in the world attempts to keep up to Arcteryx. I will never wear anything else so long as I live. They are the best!!! But I digress, this jacket kicks serious ass. I use it for everything from skiing, climbing, hiking and casual use. The fit and finish is the best you won't be sorry. Pay the extra, you'll get the quality.
Great jacket
the best softshell on the market. i got this as a christmas present so i cant really comment on the value, but i will say that this is an awesome jacket. i use this jacket primarily for skiing, and the jacket works much better than any of the other gore tex crap i have ever owned. the strech fit rocks on the slopes. buy it for your son for christmas!
Exceptional, feature-rich, multi-use jacket.
This is my first Arc'teryx item and I'm already addicted. Their attention to detail and quality is outstanding. I purchased this item as an all-wear jacket (from everyday use to international travel to extended backpacking). I wanted something that would be warm, breathable, wind/water-resistant, could double as mid and outer layer, and last as long as I will. I got that and more. I tested it from 40+ to 70+ degree weather and have been consistently comfortable. The hand pockets have an inner mesh lining that can aid breathability during highly aerobic activities, or in warmer weather. The hood is considerably larger than my head as it can accomodate helmets, but adjusts effectively to snugly fit around my head. The pockets are generously sized. Things I would change/add for my purposes: seam tape in rain exposed areas (particularly the shoulder seams where a decent rain can eventually seep through), exchange the sleeve pocket for an inner security pocket, slightly longer cut, and a slightly less trim fit for better underlayering in cooler climates. I wear this jacket every chance I get, definitely worth the price I paid.
Best softshell jacket
This is a very versatile piece of garments. The Polartec fabric sheds water nicely and is blocks wind, yet is highly breathable. The hood is very convenient in windy and rainy weather. Perfect fit which allows great mobility. The jacket is beautifully made. The build quality is way above other brands such as Patagonia and TNF.
Worth its weight in Gold
Let me first start by saying Altrec is the best. Great prices, super fast/cheap shipping. After trying TNF, Mountain Hardware and all the other top outdoor brands, it is easy to say that Arc'teryx makes the most functional and superior outdoor garments. Living in Colorado, I have ample oppty to test this jacket in a variety of conditions. From the slopes, to verticval ice walls, to extended backpacking trips at high altitude, this jackets performs flawlessly. The fit is athletic, and as with all other Arc'teryx garments there is no excess material or bagginess in unwated area to clutter up your movement. And the soft polartec lining makes it a joy to wear. The fabric sheds water beutifully, and the hood is large to accomodate your helmet. Another winner from Arc'teryx. You dont need that new couch, buy a couple of these instead, you wont be sorry.
This jacket is a great investment.
This jacket represents one of the finest soft shell out there. The Mountain Hardwear Synchro and Alchemy are pale in comparision to this jacket. Altrec's customer service was very helpful and knowledgable. The delivery was right on-time. Get this jacket!!!! It worths every penny.
Good!! worth over USD300
I have several pieces of softshells but this one is the most versatile and comfort one. You know Powershield is really stretch fabric than Wiindstopper so you can have better mobility while activity. But I don't believe it is warmer than Windstopper actually. Regarding hood it is big enough for wearing over helmet but it looks a little bit fun during off due to huge size.
Anyway you may go into MX hood rather than MX Jacket if you are looking for a stuff which can reduce your pack size in variable weather condition.
It works!!!
Best jacket I've ever own
After some days hiking on day trips in the Alps this jacket is better than all jackets I've ever own before (including Gamma MX jacket without hoody).Best quality in class and bought for a very good price. Go for it. There is no better.
If you need a hood, its the way to go
This jacket rocks. I get pro deals from Pattagucci and cloudveil. I have to say I would pay full ticket for this jacket.
The cut is form perfect. The jacket does not breathe as well as my Serendipity jacket but it is not designed too. The cut is much better than the Ice Flow and Arcteryx does not cut corners were Cloudveil is starting to. It is nice to see a company not lower their standard just to make a few extra bucks. I wish Cloudveil would follow that but I think they are losing sight of their soul focus.
The only thing I do not like about the Gamma is I think the zipper should be reversed on the laminated sleeve pocket. The zip always seems to open just a little and the snow, ice or water always seems to get in. Over-all, the jacket performs very well. Breathes great and dries quick. The hood is also a great fit.
Fits like a dream!
I bought this soft shell after trying Patagonia and Hardwear- It is a snug fit but it moves so well with your body and regulates heat very effeciently- I use it in Vermont and it can be worn alone (without heavy exercise) to about 35 F- after that you need a shell over it- the material is excellent and doesnt snag easily- Great craftmanship and smooth lines make it visually the best soft shell around in my mind- Buying at Altrec I got free shipping and I see that it is elsewhere backcountry.com, rei etc for 328- i paid 245- a deal in my mind!
Thinking of buying a second one
I've been wearing this everyday since buying it. It's warm enough to wear with just a t-shirt underneath during this time of year. Waterproofness is great - been in two rainy days already without getting wet. The hood is a definite plus - worth the extra 50 dollars. The jacket is nicely fitted so it looks great on you. And the material really strethes so you can wear a lot of layers underneath if you want to. Worth every penny!
Awesome soft shell
This is my favorite soft shell! I've tried the North Face Vector 2 (too heavy), Mtn. Hardwear Windstopper Tech fleece (holds too much sweat in), Mtn. Hardwear N2S W/S (comfy but no hood and partial zipper). The Gamma MX is lightweight, takes abuse well, dries quickly and I love the hood. I can pull the hood up and down as needed in windy conditions although it is a tight fit over a climbing helmet. I also have the matching pants and they took crampon scrapes without a whimper.
Pricey but worth it
Light, with that great Arcteryx attention to detail. Super hood design thats simple to operate via chest pockets. For heavens sake Arcteryx put your name on your products, not insanely like NF but in a tasteful manner. I buy only North American made goods any more. Why? Do you think Asian manufacturers are following ANY environmental guidelines in their manufacturing....Use your head and keep your fellow gearheads employed. Great, handsome jacket that you will take every where. Not waterproof, like every
other softshell it will eventually leak at the seams in a down pour. So much more comfortable than the Schoeller materials.
Very good Soft Shell
This is a very good softshell. Water and wind resitant. It keeps warm and doesn't weigh a lot. One of the best jackets from Arc'teryx.
incredible
This is an amazing jacket! Power shield material is strong and lightweight. Arcteryx calls this jacket water resistant, seems to me it is waterproof. I wore it in a torrent for 15-20 minutes and was bone dry. Go ahead and spend the extra money to get the hooded version. This garment is not much on pure warmth, you will need an insulating layer underneath, but it gives good wind stopping ability, has plenty of pockets, and looks great!
One of Arc'teryx's best pieces
The Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody (where DO they get those names?) is another immaculately thought out and executed softshell from a company known for leading edge products. I own two other softshells by Arc"teryx, including an "easy rider" jacket, as well as softshells by other companies. This piece fits very close to the body, it is not boxy at all, but has lots of give in all the right places, so it does not ever feel confining. It is very lightweight, so can be worn in spring weather, but also is completely windproof, so provides a considerable level of protection. While Arc'teryx doesn't promote the jacket as waterproof, in my experience, which is somewhat limited to date, it is. The hood is an excellent addition, and because it is much softer than a typical "hard shell" hood, is so much more comfortable than even the well thought out hood on an Arc'teryx hardshell. Because my coat is black, I can wear it every day, both for dressy, casual, and athletic pursuits. In fact, I have to think of a reason NOT to wear this coat. And, if the weather is really bad, I can always wear it UNDER my hardshell, also from Arc'teryx. In short, this is a great product from a great company when it comes to softshells.
sweet jacket
simply the best jacket in my closet. well designed. i kept warm with only a mid layer underneath in temps near freezing this winter. the hood is well worth the extra $.
Great softshell
One of the only two (the other being the Eider Shield jacket) softshells to be entirely made of polartec shield windproof/water resistant material as opposed to only panels of the material over an otherwise fleece shell like most performance softshells. Extremely lightweight, great close to body fit with room fir a base layer and a mid layer if needed, breathable and enough pockets.
Cons: not completely watertight: it will not withstand an endless downpour allthough it manages standard city showers well enough.
No inside pocket and no thumbholes to keep the arms from running up during skiing.
Not cheap, although worth the money because, again, entirely made of Polartec shield fabric.
Very nice light weight jacket
Love the style, comfort, and fit of this jacket.
Superb Quality
Great jacket. Terrific Arc'teryx quality. Perfect fit.Would of liked to see thumb holds though.
