Fit Tip: This item is semi-fitted. Item fits true to design, and has room for range of motion and comfort. Most customers size up one size.
Mountain Hard Wear's Convertible Pack Pants are perfect travel companions under partly cloudy skies or in regions where nippy mornings serve up sunbaked afternoons. Unlike most convertible travel pant designs this one has reinforced seat and knees, making it better suited for trekking in isolated areas where tailors rarely tread. The seamless conical waist is chamois-lined, so it feels better than most traditionally cut backpacking pants, especially if you're bearing a heavy pack. If you're headed to dusty and dirty places, consider the Mountain Hard Wear Pack Pant--it doesn't convert like this one, but it does offer many of the same features and fabric.
Great fit for small waists!
So many pants are hip huggers. This is a great fit for a shapely woman!
Very durable and comfortable
I have several pairs of these pants. I use them as my field pants for search and rescue. They have held up beautifully through all kinds of terrain and have not been damaged by working in thick brush. The synthetic fabric dries quickly when wet and breathes well. It's a tough enough fabric to protect your legs from scratches. The articulated knees allow freedom of movement.
They are roomy enough for underlayers. The deep pockets are very practical as are the knife/key hook and small zipper pocket.
The length seems to vary depending on the color you buy and they do shrink a little in length when washed.
Practical for Trekking
I didn't take off these pants for an entire trip to the Grand Canyon recently. They are perfect both as long pants and as shorts. The waistband is lined with soft wicking material, which is nice when lugging a pack. The legs are wide, but the hips are snug. There is a zipper at the ankle so you don't have to take the boots off when converting into shorts. I usually order a size larger in Mountain Hardware, especially in bottoms.

Best fit in the industry for the ladies
I have tried many convertible pants and these fit the best, have the most features and are the best made. I am in between a 10 and a 12 and slightly heavy in the hips/butt and nothing EVER fits me right.(I carry an extra 10 pounds). These pants actually run slightly big,(compared to other brands) and the 10 fit beautifully. Wow...bonus! They look great. The shorts are a nice mid length (my legs have seen better days) and I love them so much I ordered the other color. Altrec had easy shopping, fast delivery and painless return policy.(I bought many sizes 10,12 & 14 and returned 2 pair)
perfect backpacking pants
bit the bullet a few years ago and purchased these after the hipbelt caused chaffing on a backpacking trip. LOVE THEM! pockets make sense for hiking and backpacking--out of way of hipbelt. dries fast in rainy weather, easy to convert to shorts w/out having to take off my boots. easy to clean on the trail. have withstood sand, rock, dirt and rain quite well!
Nice pants, color shows up differently online.
The pants are of very fine quality and have many nice features. They are longer in length than I had expected. Also, the color which shows on line looks like a dark gray or black. The pants are the color which they are named...cocoa, which is a dark brown.
Perfect size
Perfect size!!!
Awesome pants!
These pants have great features, are well made, and are an awesome pant for the money!
perfect for work and play!
These pants are great. Just what I was looking for. Water/stain resistant, convertible, and heavy duty. It was an added bonus to have the soft material, almost like fleece lining the areas that can cause problems the most like inside the waistline, seat, and knees. Seem a little more heavy duty and thick than I'd expected but great for my shifts at the ice rink to keep me warm.
The Greatest
I've had other convertible pants through the years. I purchased the Mountain Hardwear pants for myself and thought they were soo great; I bought some for my wife.
Best pants for me
I have treid a few different brands of pants. Now I will only wear Mountain Hardwear Pack Pants. Convertible are the best the shorts hit just right not too long. The only thing I would like to see added is the gater like on the pants.
Great camping pants
I bought these for my girlfriend, I already own 2 pairs of mens. These are great all purpose pants. Very comfortable and durable with good technical features, like lined waistband, velcro pockets, key clip, zippered bottoms & cinch hem. I rarely zipoff the bottoms, but nice to have when needed. Biggest drawback-I wish there were belt loops to be able to use a belt to carry a cased folding knife.
a little tight
I ordered the cocoa, which looks like the color of dried cocoa powder (light, dusty brown) which is good, because it goes with black. I usually wear a 4, but the 8 in MH felt just like a 4. Would recommend going 2 sizes up. Bonus, the stiching really flatters a women's backside.
comfortable and practical
The only thing I don't like about these pants is that they buldge out where the zipper for the zip off legs is. But that's only cosmetic.
STURDY MATERIAL
THE PANTS ARE HIGH QUALITY MATERIAL, SEEM VERY DURABLE AND NOT TOO THIN; A LITTLE HEAVY BUT PERFECT FOR SPRING/FALL DAYS THAT ARE NOT TOO HOT; THE FIT IS NOT FLATTERING, THOUGH; I AM 5'3" AND THEY RIDE ABOVE THE NAVAL (HIGH WAISTED) AND "BUNCH OUT" IN THE FRONT ZIPPER SECTION; I WISH THEY WERE A MORE TAILORED FIT THAT RIDE LOWER ON THE WAIST BUT THEY WILL DEFINITELY BE USED ON BACKPACKING TRIPS HERE IN THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS
Sits too high at the waist, and material feels heavy
Well, i bought this because of the excellent reviews. However, I must say that this is my first impression, and I have not worn it hiking yet. So, this pair pants may be excellent when time comes for it to perform.
Ok, what i didn't quite like about it:
1. Material - I was expecting more lightweight material, so this feels more 'cottony' and heavy to me. Didn't seem like a technical material, but that's just based on feel.
2. Cut - the pants are instead true to size. I normally wear size 0/2 pants with Banana Republic and Gap. But I ordered size 6 and it was rather "snug". the pants sit on the waist, and I am used to pants on the hip. So I did not quite like that. However, i guess that's due to their patented conical waist.
3. ZIPPER - I feel the zipper of the convertible when I'm wearing the full long pants, and it is quite unconfortable.
4. LENGTH - I should order a petit. But there wasn't and i ordered the regular. SO, the waist feels very snug (like I think if I eat a full meal, I'd have to open the buckle). Yet the rest of the pants is too baggy for me. And the pants are too long. However, that could be fixed with the cinch.
Overall: I'm not sure if I am going to keep it.
well made
The pants are high quality, but the fit isn't quite right for me. [ I've tried two sizes.] Still I'm sure I'll get quite a bit of wear out of them.
