Petzl: Tikka XP Head Lamp
Description
Smaller and lighter than the Myo® XP, Petzl's Tikka XP features an integrated battery/lamp case that fits away in all but the most miniscule backpack pouches. With over 120 hours of battery life, it's all the lamp most campers, backpackers and daytime climbers will need for a week in the backcountry....
Read More...Plenty of climbers, backpackers and campers think of energy-saving LED headlamps as a safer substitute for tent-bound candle lanterns, but Petzl's Tikka XP shines new light on nocturnal potential beyond your tent and campsite. It features three lighting settings including a boost mode that illuminates up to 55 yards or so depending on the light-reflection properties of the surrounding terrain (wet black rocks always seem to steal some from any manufacturer's claim). While boost mode is an energy-saving option (the three AAA batteries can last up to 120 hours), it's a fairly practical feature when you think about how much time you spend looking at the ground directly in front of your feet while hiking or climbing in the pre-dawn and dusk hours. The power-saving economy mode is ideal for tent reading and sorting pack gear. A wide angle lens, tilt lamp and superb water resistance are standard features. The battery life indicator reminds you when the batteries are at 30% capacity and 10% capacity.
- Three light settings: Maximum, Optimum and Economy
- Single powerful LED light bulb source with a 50% boost mode that lasts for 20-second intervals
- Wide angle lens for increased peripheral range
- Integrated battery and light case (no battery pack in back like the Myo® XP
- Adjustable elastic headband
- Light penetration range: 38 yds. to 55 yds. (35 m. to 50 m.)
- Tilt option gives you freedom to aim light where you need it
- 120 hours of battery life when used on Economy mode, less time on other light settings.
- Three AAA batteries included
- Weight: 95 g. (includes battery weight)

Very light and sturdy gear Very easy to use, only 2 batteries to operate the system, last for many hours, waterproof although I would not with it, I like the possibility of easily finding something in my tent during the night wide angle torch as well as checking out what was the weird noise I just heard in the nearby woods using the far reaching light...

Good Headlamp This headlamp is great. Has a pivoting head and stays in place even when running. I use it to run in the winter at night and the feature to give a broader light works great but when I need a more focused light I can. Petzl makes a great product and this has not disappointed. Please ask me any questions if you have some.

Incredible output for size with a (just) justifyable price! I started off with a Petzel Zoom, moved up to a Petzel Duo (3 LED) when they came out, and have now been astounded by the minute size and extodinary output of the XP. After having a problem with my Duo and having it fixed under 3 year warranty, I am sold on Petzel service - it's the best.
I was so impressed that when the XP came out I decided to part with my $AUD 100 and buy one.
The power output for size is remanrkable - I can even ride my mountain bike by it's light - and middle or economy setting are more than enough for normal after dark hiking. Whilst it may not be as waterproof as my Duo (boughy partly because another of my persuits is white water canoeing), the XP is more than good enough to survive a heavy rain storm and is now my back-up lighting for mountain biking, hiking or running my dog after dark.

Great lightweight light Powerful beam and lightweight. The battery life indicator is a great feature... you can adjust the power output to low when the batteries start getting low when you forgot to bring those extra batteries.

Great output - good battery life The Petzl Tikka XP is a great backpacking headlamp. The included alkaline AAA batteries provided about 5 hours of light on the high setting before noticeably dimming. The unit also has a sliding diffuser that helps to disperse the light when around camp.
On high beam mode, the beam reaches a good 60 feet, providing plenty of light along the trail.
I was considering using AAA Lithium batteries for longer life. I e-mailed Petzl and they wrote back stating that the Tikka XP will also run on lithium AAA batteries (the manual states nothing about lithium batteries).
I've also had good luck with Eveready NiMh 850mah cells. They provide almost the same battery life as alkalines.
The strap is comfortable, and is long enough to stretch over a ballcap for use. Batteries are easy to change, and the battery compartment is sealed with a rubber gasket. The unit is not rated for underwater use, but handles rain and damp weather without any leaks.
The Tikka XP also has a small LED on the side of the case which indicates current battery life.
The closest competition to the XP would be the Princeton Tec EOS.
Drawback: The only drawback I see of the Tikka XP is the price. I paid $50 for the unit; a comparable PT EOS can be found for less than $30 on the internet.

Great headlamp - Washing machine safe? Very good battery life, in boost mode it's amazingly bright, Great for the occasional "what was that???". I mostly use the flood beam on the low and medium settings. well thought out design. I made the mistake of putting the headlamp in my clothing bag and it ended up going through the washing machine =s to my surprise not a drop entered the headlamp, although it was nice and clean.

I love my Petzl head lamp I love my head lamp. I own another Petzl thats 5 yrs. old.I have mowed my lawn with my head lamp and cut flowers at night. This newer Petzl has a spotlight which is a great light for that one area. Then the slider makes a wider beam.I live in rural Eastern MT. When I need a headlamp for outside it is a dependable Petzl light for not stepping on rattlesnakes. When I leave home. I have my Petzl head lamp always with me for seeing a flat tire and I have both hands free.. In the winter time when power goes out, I read by my Petzl head lamp.It is the Best little head lamp that I have used and it doesn't hurt my head with alot of Wt. thanks for your product.

Light and comfotable IT feels a bit plasticy and flimsy, compared to my maglight, but I am confident that the Tikka XP is more sturdy than it feels. Very good light output even on economy mode. Cannot coment on battery life yet, but after 4-5 hrs on economy - no dimming yet. Comfortable and light to wear, not used in the rain as of yet. Diffuser good around camp and hiking, spot if you need to see a little further ahead
