For day trips with big aspirations or overnight adventures ranging from mellow trail excursions to fast-paced climbs, the versatile Mountain Hardware Trance Backpack is equipped to handle your varied loads. A padded suspension system transfers the load evenly to the hips and shoulders, offering comfort that stays with you all day. The EVA backpanel, which slides in immediately in front of a shape-maintaining HDPE framesheet, doubles as a 38 inch bivy pad for those who are especially concerned about shaving ounces. But perhaps you are more inclined to make your sleeping arrangements as comfortable as possible, choosing instead to use the handy front release straps to attach a sleeping pad. These straps also work for crampons and skis, with an alternative crampon storage location provided underneath the floating top lid. For further load carrying efficiency, the Trance includes dual Axe-S™ quick release ice axe toggles, reinforced haul loops, and an optional 1.5 inch web belt with gear loops. I bought this for my recent trip to India and it worked great. The size was more than enough for a two week trip and yet it was small enough that I was still able to pass it as a carry on so I didn't have to check a bag. Very comfortable to wear and very durable materials. Another great product from MHW!

The size is just perfect for travleing in other countries with lots of storage compartments. Lots of useful details added to the design to make sure it is comfortable to be on your shoulder for trekking.

The Trance has more than adequate space for single day guiding ice climbing or fast alpine overnights. While the frame transfers the load to the hipbelt well, the hipbelt itself is too bulky for climbing with a harness, and the webbing belt doesn't transfer the load at all. The Trance carries well and balances well while climbing. Even fully loaded there is plenty of headroom with a helmet on, and it cinches down well.
