Nike Air Zoom Tallac Pro GTX

Excellent for light hiking and even a little minimalist backpacking, the waterproof and breathable Nike Air Zoom Tallac Pro GTX offers the performance and feel of an athletic shoe without giving up key support for load-bearing endeavors. While it certainly wouldn't be the best choice for weeks of backpacking beneath a 60-lb. backpack, the Nike Air Zoom Tallac Pro GTX is great with a day pack, especially if you intend on sticking to the trail and covering short distances. Directly beneath the injected TPU and mesh upper is a breathable and fully waterproof GORE-TEX® XCR® laminate for optimal comfort in varied weather and trail conditions. Inside the full-length Phylon midsole are two Zoom Air Units (one in the forefoot and the other in the heel) to optimize cushioning while minimizing any potential for stone bruising. At the bottom you'll find Nike's proven and popular All-Trac compound sole, a great sticky rubber design that grips well on a variety of outdoor terrain.

  • Waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® XCR® laminate
  • Breathable mesh upper reinforced with lightweight TPU for additional protection
  • Innovative lacing system keeps laces flat to minimize abrasion and enhance ankle support
  • Cushioned full-length Phylon midsole with Zoom Air Unit in forefoot
  • Encapsulated Zoom Air Unit in heels to absorb footstrike (especially on descents)
  • Nike TrailFrame reinforces key areas along rubber compound sole
  • Nike All-Trac sticky rubber compound sole for exceptional traction in varied conditions

Fine boots if you know what you're getting.
I've worn my old Air Zoom Tallac+ everywhere from Marin County, to the Colorado Plateau, to (ironically enough) the summit of Mt. Tallac. They're not super durable, and I think one needs to know that before considering them. They will simply be very lightweight and extremely comfortable for medium duty hiking. I might have abused them (the "Air" inserts may have ruptured hiking on scree), but I can live with that given the comfort level and how quickly they break in. I haven't tried the new ones yet, but I thought I'd just share my experiences with the older version.

Superb product!
The best trail boots/shoes I have ever owned. Very durable and adaptable. I have used these for 15-20 mile rugged terrain treks and trail running.I am buying my third pair. Nike should keep this in their line forever!

Air Tallic
The Air Tallic Shoe is a durable shoe for Hiking and at times I use it for weight lifting (Squats). I can tell you it has very good support in the arch after 3 pair. I can tell you it doesnt break down. I would recommend it to anyone who hikes in the back country and is on their feet most of the day. Just give them a try and you will understand what I mean. Great hiking to you.

My second pair of Tallacs - love them
My first pair of Air Zoom Tallacs were great. I wore them on two separate hikes to the White Mountains as well as around town for the past year. Very lightweight, supportive and comfortable. However, the toe rand seam let go on my last hike on the old boots. Hence my purchase of the 2006 model. So far, I love them. Can't wait to wear them on a hike.

Junk
These dogs literally fell apart in less than 6 months of very moderate use. The soles detached, as did the toe caps. I had to keep gluing them back together with shoe goop to get some extra wear out of them. Maybe I just got a pair of "lemons," but I'll never buy any Nike hiking boots again!

Excellent hiking boot with acceptable limitations
Someday, there will be a lightweight, ankle-spporting, three-season, breathable truly waterproof hiking boot that sticks like glue to wet rock and provides 10-30 years of use. Until then, I'll continue to rely on the Nike Air Zoom Tallac because the two versions I've tried satisfy all these criteria except for the years of use. In a previous review, I raved about the first version of this boot despite its long painful break-in period (a consequence of its narrow last), susceptibility to punctures on the sides of the two box, and lack of a well-padded tongue resulting in anterior ankle pain on steep descents. The second version proved even better with no break-in time required, a consequence of its wider last, dead-on sizing, and well-padded tongue. I have hiked in these boots now on four continents without a problem. Their finest moment came a month ago on the Appalachian Trail just south of the Hundred Mile Wilderness. After walking for six hours in a torrential downpour, my hiking partner reported that his LL Bean Crestas were leaking badly despite his use of waterproof gaitors while only one of my Tallacs was mildly damp. [Last year, in its annual gear guide, the editors of Backpacker Magazine had praised the Cresta as a boot that they had never seen leak.] So, despite the fact that my first Nike Air Zoom Tallac failed as a consequence of a broken lace eyelet and my first Tallac Plus failed as a consequence of a sole defect, I continue to love this boot. [Notably, Altrec graciously replaced both pairs of the defective boots.] Morevover, a week ago, while doing a one-day 20-mile hike up and around Mt. Katahdin, I slipped and fell while descending a wet, gravel-covered rocky slope and, in the process, fractured a Leki hiking pole. These things happen and will continue to happen no matter what we wear on our feet. Currently, the 500 miles of use (much of it on rock and gravel) each pair has provided is well worth the price.

Excellent Light Duty Hiker
These boots are excellent. They are the second pair of Nike lightweight hiking boots I have owned. I am a personal trainer and consequently am on my feet all day. I wear them for every day use as they offer excellent ankle and heel support while being very soft. There is virtually no break in period with these shoes. I have taken them out on the back trails and they handle well in rough, muddy terrain... very grippy traction. It is true that these shoes are not designed for heavy duty hiking and backpacking. However they offer exceptional comfort and support and do the job they are designed to do very well. If you get one year of heavy, everyday use out of these shoes, you will have gotten your money's worth. I recommend them to anyone looking for a light duty trail shoe or a high top shoe / boot with excellent ankle support.

Best boots I've owned
I've hiked and backpacked since I was a toddler, and I'm now in my mid-40s, and these are the best boots I've ever owned, for four reasons: fit, weight, support, and waterproofness. Fit: I get blisters very easily (I have a narrow heel, wide ball) and have never had even one with these boots, even hiking right out of the box, and in some of the steepest country in the Rockies. Weight: these are only slightly heavier than running shoes, which is the same as taking many pounds off your back. Support: excellent for a light hiker, and better than their first generation version. I just hiked 30 miles in the Scapegoat Wilderness with a 45 pound pack - no problem. Waterproofness: they're gore-tex, so no problems there. Great boots. If there is one quibble it might be that your feet are a bit more vulnerable to bruising on the side, but that probably goes with a light hiker. Nike could perhaps fix it with a little padding where the side meets the sole.

Great hiking boots ... extremely lightweight and sure-footed
These boots are great. I hiked the Kesugi Ridge trail in Denali State Park, Alaska, in last year's model (Air Zoom Tallac Plus) carrying a 45 lb. pack. No problem traversing the rock slides or navigating a very slippery downhill trail in the rain. Loved the light weight ... half the weight of "traditional" hiking boots. The boots provided the comfort of running shoes with more than adequate ankle support for rough trail hiking. The Gore-Tex shell kept the water out, and did not hold moisture inside the shoe ... a very comfortable shoe for spring, summer and fall treks. No break-in is required. I bought a new pair (the Air Zoom Tallac Pro GTX) to hedge against the possibility that Nike discontinues this line. I have done a few short hikes in the new boots, and they seem as comfortable and serviceable as last year's model ... perhaps with slightly stiffer and stronger ankle support. Here's a strong vote for Nike to continue this line. The shoes fit me true to size and probably will work best for those who do not have wide, large volume feet.

Excellent Boot
Purchased the Air Zoom Tallac specifically to hike the Grand Canyon North Rim to South Rim in one day. I have been training for the last 2 months and so far these are the perfect hiking boots for the Grand Canyon hike. Break-in time was less than a week. The fit is great. They are so light! I'm wearing Thorlo's grade 3 hiking socks and for me, this combination is perfect. My actual hike date is 3 months away. By the way, you guys are wonderful. Thanks for the great service!

Another Excellent boot
Two years ago I was wearing Vasque Super Hikers for backpacking and Heavier hiking. After I bought the earlier Tallac Pro and used them for a couple of months I never wore my super hikers again. I was amazed at the stability, carrying ~65 lbs even off trail. The Tallac Pro GTX boots are about a month old. They have increased stability and yet are still really comfortable. It is clear they are going to be just excellent.

By far, the best shoes I've ever invested in
The boots are extremely comfortable and breathable. The ankle support is great, its saved me from a couple stumbles. The traction is like glue, and it is nearly impossible to lose your footing. They look better when you get them in the mail than they do in the picture. By far, the best pair of ACGs i've ever purchased. I highly recommend these shoes.

these shoes are awesome, the traction is amazing and the comfort is unreal!! they are well made and have tremendous ankle support(3/4 mid) to hold you steady and sure footed thru most all terrain.the gore-tex is a great touch to an already formidable shoe as this one!! go and get yourself a pair cause im sure nike wont make these too long.

Above average light weight boots
I have been wearing the Air Zoom Tallac boots for several years now. They are excellent for my pack weight that is between 35 and 40 pounds, with good ankle support and minimal break in time. The only drawback is that they wear out after about 120 to 160 miles, but that is reasonable durability for the lightweight design.

Second pair of Tallac Pro's. Great boots with just enough stickyness to go climbing. Found the size ran a bit small. No break in period.

Good and Bad
Was looking for a replacement for my old Nike ACG boots and found these. Due to other reviews, thought I would give them a try. They do fit well for an average width foot, and the Air cushion is still the best system out there, but there are a few problems with this boot. If you plan on hiking anywhere where there will be lots of mud, loose dirt, snow, leaves, or sand, find a boot with a more aggresive outsole. The sticky rubber works well on bare rock, but it is nowhere near aggressive enough for any of the above-mentioned surfaces (and does not self-clean well at all). The outsole design looks like it is set up more for climbing anyway (fair enough), due to the position of the lugs, and their shape, so these would probably be great for Moab slickrock, bouldering, etc. but not for hiking/approach on deep, wet or loose surfaces. And, be careful on nice floors (tile, wood, etc.) because the soft sticky rubber will leave marks. The Goretex will obviously work like goretex always does, so no problems there. If the upper portion (around the ankle) flexed a little bit more, these would make great trail runners due to the sweet Zoom Air. I know its a different class of boot, but the Vasque Summit GTX boots are still the best I've found for all round outdoor activities. Amazing traction, self-cleaning, durability, (and Goretex, of course) and due to the outsole/midsole design they not only provide excellent stability, but seem to help you walk better as your feet roll through their stride. If could only take one pair, those or the Nikes, for any trip, I would still choose the Vasques.

Different construction changed fit.
It seems that Nike went with a less expensive manufacturing technique for the toe box area of the boot. This has made the fit less adaptive than their previous version of the boot. Not quite sure yet if it will work for me.

air tallac+'s I bought at altrec
great if they were a 60 dollar tennis shoe because they wore out in a defective way if you buy footwear from nike your getting a tennis shoe and it wears out like one the nike lightweight hiking boots with watersheild technology instead of goretex is much more feasable and durable purchase and leak less at $65.00.

Not worth the money.
My guess is that Nike produced this boot to fix the terrible durability problems that the Air Zoom Tallac and Air Zoom Tallac+ had. They might have increased the durability of the boot, but they made a boot that doesn't fit as well as the previous boots and breathes much less well. I have worn lots of Goretex boots and shoes and most of them controlled moisture reasonably well. These boots don't. There are better lightweight boots on the market. Don't waste your money on these.
