Where did my DWR go?
April 29, 2011
If you ever have washed your rain jackets and or soft-shells with detergent, and wondered why the rain doesn't bead up anymore? It is your laundry detergent. After buying an Arc Teryx Gore-tex rain jacket and a MH softshell, I didn't want what usually happens when you use laundry detergent. After doing my research, I decided to use only Nikwax Tech Wash exclusively. Well my 4 year old rain jacket works as good as when it was new. And my 2 year old soft-shell beads the rain and snow as good as the day I bought it. Add Nikwax TX Direct or Wash-in, and you can't go wrong.
Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great valuebetter than I expected
April 21, 2011
Really good cleaning properties. Lifted grime off cuffs, left goretex refreshed. Rinsed out well; followed up with Tx Direct and the water beaded right up. Great stuff
Pros: PerformanceGood product, does what it should well, pricey.
February 07, 2005
Product cleans well for what it is designed to do. Keeps hi tech gear clean and functional. Pricey.
good but expensive
September 18, 2004
Non-detergent is required for this kind of fabric, but I can't see that this is that much better than any other non-detergent washing product. It's certainly more expensive.
Great way to extend gear life
December 06, 2009
I bought the large bottle of Tech Wash because I plan to use it several times. I love saving money, so I'm always looking for ways to extend my gear's life. I used this with the Soft Shell Spray On to revitalize my jacket and pants. Water beads up nicely on them now. I wish the bottle had a measuring method built into the packaging.
Great for horse clothing
September 15, 2010
This product does an amazing job on all my waterproof equine clothing..last longer and gets it super clean!! Love it...moving to the larger size as I do at least 20 horse blankets every fall before the cold weather hits.
Pros: Performance, Ease of use, Cons: CostReally revitalizes
December 13, 2004
I haven't washed my snowboard boots in about eight years (going twice a year each of those years)... for some reason, just never really hit me to wash them, just dry them out. Finally decided to do that this year and since my boots have a GoreTex lining, I decided to use this product to wash this (and the rest of my outfit). Besides the small amount that comes in this bottle, the product really does it's job and the lining seems to be able to keep me drier (blocking out water and letting out sweat). Also used this on my pants (which I DID wash regularly, but with ordinary detergent) and that made a difference! Ddefinitely more breathable since the fabric isn't clogged.
Great product
October 10, 2007
I use this on all my outdoor gear. It get's things clean without removing water/wind proofing.
WORKS GREAT!!!
March 28, 2005
great product. cleans well. just leaves a slight unpleasing smell for a couple of days afterwards.
tech wash
October 08, 2010
Altrec shipped immediately thank you. I've been using tech wash for a while now and it works as advertised, be sure to follow the instructions. I mostly use it for my climbing, skiing and mountaineering gear in the Pacific Northwest. One thing that has always been frustrating is the fact that a lot of local stores will only sell the small sized bottles. Buying in bulk makes more sense to me and is a little cheaper in the long run. Overall I like this product, minus one star for the cost.
Pros: Ease of use, Cons: CostCouldn't be easier!
January 12, 2008
Great product. Very easy to use in front load washers.
excellent pretreatment for waterproof fabrics
January 07, 2010
Excellent pre-treatment for waterproof fabrics
Better than Granger
March 05, 2007
I bought Granger's , recommended by Marmot, and Nikwax, recommended by Patagonia. It may be the original clothing, but the older Patagonia coat treated by Nikwax repels like new. The Marmot, washed by the Granger product doesn't.
Essential for High Performance Gear
January 05, 2010
I have been using Nikwax products, including Tech Wash, for a long time. They are good quality, and I have also been impressed by the knowledgeability and attitude of their Customer Service people. It is pricey; that's the only downside. Consequently I only use it conservatively on high performance outdoor gear that needs the best care.
Fabulous product
October 09, 2007
Each of their products is excellent.
Great for ski clothes
February 06, 2006
Great for washing your ski clothes, however the smell was not something you want lingering in your home.
Great Stuff
February 15, 2010
Really noticed a difference in my performance clothes, especially all my capilene and silk weight baselayers. Took out the stink and they are soft like new. Highly recommended
Super product!
October 30, 2004
This product does what it states it is supposed to do. I followed the labeled instructions and washed my BMW motorcycle riding suit and Gore-Tex liner with Nikwax TX-Direct Tech Wash. It came out clean, smelling fresh and with no color fade which I was worried about. I would highly recommend this product and will purchase additional Tech Wash when needed. Although expensive, this product really works therefore, it's worth the price to properly care for your expensive gear.
works as advertised
December 05, 2006
This is the right product to use if you plan to apply a waterproof treatment after wash. While it doesn't seam to clean quite as well as laundry detergent, it doesn't leave behind the soap residue that takes away from the waterproofness.
Great Product
January 18, 2009
Before I didn't know that you would have to use a special detergent to wash down outerwear so I used regular detergent, and of course, it didn't deliver the results. After I tried this product, my down outerwear looked like brand new and clean. Loved it.
Does a great job!
May 05, 2011
Cleans really well. Use this with the Wash-In and you are good to go! I did just that, and not only did my rain gear come out completely clean, but with the help of the Wash-In, I stayed dry all day!
Pros: Performance, Ease of use, Great valueGot coat really clean.
December 02, 2005
The cleaner cleaned my coat, great with no annoying odors, or discoloration. I really think the value of this product will come in play, with preserving the wash-in treatment.

Good-to-go-wash
January 17, 2007
Outstanding wash for DWR finished wear. I've also used it for other items that should not be washed in other liquid detergents. Note, though, that the recommended amounts are quite excessive I've found -- less works just as well.
Fantastic
June 09, 2009
Cleans well and waterproofness was retained
Great washer!
March 09, 2004
I just washed some of my hard shell and polar tech jackets in this. It gets them nice and clean. I was using detergent but I noticed all the water repelency was quickly being removed for my jackets. Now I won't have to re-proof them so often.
Worked well to clean Aerostich Roadcrafter suit
June 08, 2005
The Nikwax Tech Wash was used to clean off 9 months of road crud and bug residue from a motorcycle riding suit. The suit is made with a very heavy-duty Gore-tex/Cordura fabric and is supposed to be waterproof. The Nikwax wash is intended to clean the fabric without removing the waterproofing properties. I put the suit through two wash cycles and three rinse cycles since I was using soft water and the Nikwax wash foams up a bit. The suit came out nicely cleaned and a little less stiff. I have not had a chance to see if it is still waterproof.
Classy Cleaner
December 22, 2003
Ideal for high tech clothing: waterproof/breathables, windblocks, etc. Excellent cleaner with no residual detergent spots. The water-repellent finish clearly lasts longer with Tech Wash. AL
important to have
October 11, 2005
if you own any technical outdoor clothing, you need this wash - it cleans items well and safely.
Great product
April 24, 2011
I use this product to wash all of my technical gear, and it works very well. It works particularly well on my waterproof rain gear. I recommend this product highly.
Pros: Performance, Ease of use, Great valueIt Works
March 13, 2006
What more can you ask? It does just what it should, and isn't appreciably pricier than the other brands out there. Follow it up with a little of the Wash-In and you're good to brave the rain once again.
A Great Product
November 09, 2004
Cleaned my dirty ski clothes just great.Now I don't have to buy new gear.
Good Product!
February 12, 2007
Nikwax did a good job (not the greatest on stubborn stains...recommend pre-treating for those)of getting rid of all the dirt and grime on my shells. As stated in other reviews, there is a bit of a chemical smell after coming out of the wash, but that quickly wears off. Made all jackets feel brand new again!!
Nikwax Rocks!
May 16, 2010
I don't use anything but Nikwax for all my skiwear! Techwash is a "must have" in keeping your ski wear looking and performing like new!
Does what it says on the tin
April 28, 2010
Just remember that normal detergents don't play nice with your DWR coating. So if you are going to reproof afterwards using tx direct or something similar and you plan on using your washing machine you'll have to "clean" it so at to remove traces of detergent residue. Personally I just hand wash by using a big bucket in the bath tub, rinse and then go with the reproofer.
works great
October 14, 2009
have to spot clean tough dirt, but helps to keep Gortex items clean and waterproof. keeps items soft.
Cleansing Your Outdoor Waterproof Gear
February 20, 2006
I had read all about how not to wash my Gore-Tex gear but until I found Tech Wash I was at a loss to find a pure soap liquid formulated for washing and cleaning a wide range of my outdoor clothing. The great thing about Tech Wash is that it can clean garments without damaging the waterproofing qualities of my gear. When I start losing the original waterproofing capabilities of my clothing I'll give Nikwax's TX Direct a try to reproof them and based on there description it should return them to a like new state.

This is the stuff-makes gear look and perform like new!
A Must for any Household
March 17, 2006
Extremely effective on stains too. For pen marks and some paint smudges, just soak the area in tech wash for 15-20 mins prior to cleaning. I have recommended this product for countless tasks. The oil based (polymers) are more effective than enzyme cleaners for some synthetics. Most stain removing products cost the same-this product has double the use!
~~~ IT WORKS ON REMOVING STAINS TOO ~~~
October 09, 2007
No kidding it really does. Why they don't market it this way beats me. I just pour a small amount in the lid, apply it to the stain and then wash it. So far, everything I've applied it to has come out. Even used it to take out grease stains on silk and it worked perfectly. They're missing the boat by not advertising this quality. Oh, and yes, it's great too on all my outdoor garb.
Jacket looks like new
October 31, 2004
Mikwax cleaned my three year old jacket so well it looks brand new. The only compliant is that following the recommending usage you can only wash a maximum of 6 garments per bottle so if you have a lot of gear opt for the larger bottle.
April 11, 2011
Tech Wash will bring back the newness and color to all your ski clothes:) we had some older skiing jackets and snow pants that had become really, really faded and tech wash was able to renew the color.
Works Great
March 10, 2008
This is our 3rd ski season of using Nikwax Tech Wash and TX Direct. It keeps our Gortex ski jackets and pants performing like new. We are sold on Nikwax products.
No problems, although could be cheaper
January 25, 2005
No problems with this product so far. I have a softshell jacket (the Arc'teryx Gamma MX) and used this to wash my jacket before applying the DWR. Since I pay so much for my jackets to begin with, I figure it's worth it to try take care of them, and to be honest, I think I'm kind of obsessed with keeping them water proof. Be careful though because Nikwax's DWR washes off easily with warm water! Other than this, I don't have any reason yet to complain (except that I wish this stuff was cheaper).
Cleans with no residue
April 01, 2004
Teck Wash cleaned my Gore-Tex items very well. Even removed grease from light colored fabric.
Don't Buy New Gear!
October 27, 2007
We were ready to buy new gear but our local sporting store told us about NikWax wash and the Tech for putting waterproofing back in our gear. Amazing! All of it like new.
Best Product
February 12, 2006
Cleans all my snowboard jackets and pants thoroughly. I just wish its a little cheaper. Upgrades Waterproofing by a notch if use in conjunction with The TX-direct Wash -in Care
Works exactly as advertised...
November 16, 2008
Tech Wash is a very gentle, yet capable detergent for the types of garments it is designed for. Heavily soiled garments definitely need spot treatment, as TechWash will not generally get ground-in dirt out that well, but it wasn't designed for that :)
Best Waterproofer I Have Found!!!
December 20, 2004
I bought this NIKWAX to restore the waterproofing to my Range Rover car cover. It is the best product I have ever found...I have now washed all of my patio furniture cushions, the fabric of the awning over my patio, the patio table umbrella, 3 ski jackets, and I still have about half a bottle left!
Nikwax is fabulous!!
January 23, 2007
Be sure to not use hot water, as it really makes a lot of suds!
excellent
November 13, 2010
this miracle substance turns my ordinary Adidas windbreaker into a water resistance "shell" very nice. it kept my jackets and pants dry...highly recommended.
Dry again
December 28, 2003
I read about Nikwax Tech Wash in a Seatle Newspaper Magazine. It restored original waterproofing by pulling out the clogging caused by liquid detergent. I was getting soaked in our wet Cascade conditions. It made a big difference. Everyone should dry up. Thanks.
Maintains water repellancy, not so good at removing stains.
March 09, 2010
If you are just looking to freshen up your outerwear without risk of stripping off your DWR, this works. It did not work so well at removing sunscreen, facial grime and dirt from around the collar of my jacket.
Awesome stuff -- kept my kids dry and warm
January 04, 2007
At a winter sledding camp I pitied the kids who were wet and cold. My kids never needed to come in because they were dry and warm.
Good Product
February 26, 2010
This is the best product for keeping our ski clothes looking good. I've used several bottles over the past few years and our ski clothing still looks new.
I use this as a stain remover too. Seriously.
May 09, 2006
I've used this stuff for years and then was told by a local ski shop employee to try it on stains. It works. You just put a little on ANY stain, toss the garment into the wash and the stain is gone. Have no clue how it works and don't care...it just does.
Amazing cleaner.
May 12, 2008
I live on a boat and have washed the canvas in other products and have found this to be the best environmentally friendly cleaner for the canvas. It is amazing how well it cleans. The canvas looks almost new. I also love that it is biodegradable and have recommeded it to several other boaters.
Tech Wash
February 03, 2007
This is the best product I have found to maintain my expensive water proof garments and rain suits. Well worth the money.
A must
October 01, 2007
Tech Wash is the best product for cleaning waterproof/breathable clothing and the like. TW is also recomended for washing clothing prior to retreating with TX direct...etc.
works great
January 05, 2007
works great, to wash your tech gear clothing
Performs as Advertised--what more could you ask?
March 27, 2006
When my Covercraft car cover gets dirty, it looses some of its waterproofing capability. Wash with this stuff and rinse properly, it comes back. And if you ever have questions for the manufacurer in England, you will get a gracious and prompt reply.
It cleaned my parka
October 15, 2003
I washed a soiled parka with manufacturers instructions to use a non detergent soap. I heard about Nikwax Tech Wash so I tried it. I had to hand wash the parka in my tub. After several rinses and a thorough drying I can say the parka is about as clean as the day I bought it.
Works Great
August 06, 2009
The whole Nikwax system works good. A bit over priced, but worth it.
Works great!
April 13, 2005
Using this product restored the basic DWR to my Alpine Parka and helped restore the water repellancy to my fleece jacket, too. It's easy to use and works as advertised. This is definitely an item to repurchase as needed to help maintain the Polartec and Gore-Tex fabrics.
