Great for Full-figured Kayaking
February 14, 2012

Bought this for my wife after feeling that the Venus suit was a bit too constrictive in the shoulders for paddling. I use a Grizzly Farmer John and the Grizzly Hydroskin Jacket (Grizzly is the male equivalent to Venus). Since there is no Venus in that set up we went with the regular lady's pieces. She is short (5'2") so the concern was height-wise she is a Medium but everything else an XL. Even though she is slightly out of the max's listed for Bust, Waist, and Hips (1" larger in all 3 cases) according to the sizing for a Large, she fits the Large fine (really flexible material). The length is a inch or so too long but she just folds it over which works well particularly over river boots. She tells me very comfy and we have used it this winter out on the river (42 degree water, 50 degree day). She hasn't really used the relief zip so can't speak to any issues there.

Pros: Great design, Ease of use, Cons: wish there was a venus version

Great Suit
May 16, 2010

Nice fit and good for those with longer arms and legs. Lightweight compared to most other suits and greater flexibility. Good for kayaking in cooler climates.

Nice fit. Very comfortable.

I haven't had a chance to try it in the field yet. I will use it both kayaking and scuba diving. The fit is perfect. I wear medium in clothing and ordered the medium in this and the fit is perfect. I am 5'4", with narrow shoulders, ribs and hips (in other words, small-boned), but generous boobs and a middle-age spare tire. I do not have the same athletic body I did when younger and my spare tire kind of squashes and gives me the shape of a tree trunk when wearing the Farmer Jane, but I didn't buy it to look good and its not the fault of its design. If you are medium or large boned at my height, you might want the next size up. Moving around in it I can see it is comfortable as well. The skin side of the zipper is well padded, so I do not anticipate any discomfort from it. Theoretically, this zipper will be a godsend when kayaking, and I can make up all kinds of humorous reasons why I need it when my fellow scuba divers ask. I will also be looking for a jacket to wear with it when needed.

Great Wetsuit / Perfect Fit
January 19, 2013

I was worried about ordering a wetsuit w/o being able to try it on first. According to the measurements my size would be medium. Since I am large on the top with small waist, I decided to go with a large to be sure it would zip. The fit is PERFECT! Will use this to SUP in the winter.

Function, Form, Fit - all perfect!
January 10, 2005

This wetsuit saved me on a winter sea kayaking adventure in Baja. Combined with arm warmers (used with biking), NRS neoprene paddle shoes and gloves, I was one happy kayaker. The lower zipper is especially "useful" on long paddles. Fit was right on for me with a size L - I am 5'7", 150 lbs, small chest with generous bootie.

great kayaking wetsuit

I've paddled with this in cold weather 3 times now, and it keeps me toasty warm. I wear a long sleeve rashguard under it and a dry top over it. I even (accidentally) swam in cold water this weekend and it really did the job. I normally have a very hard time keeping warm, but I didn't even get a chill after my swim. Air temps were warm, high 60's but the water was probably 50 degrees F. It's comfortable, but you'll want to pull the legs down before you wedge yourself in your boat so it doesn't bunch up around your upper thighs. The relief zipper is WONDERFUL, however mine has started sticking and I may have to send it in for repair if waxing it doesn't help. It's become very difficult to close after only about 6 uses.

Pros: Great design, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: relief zipper is problematic

for large women
June 24, 2004

It fits me ... although a bit skwishy in the bust. I am a 18W and 5'6" tall; for all those that have the question of what size does it really fit. This suit expands quite a bit across the hips; the bust doesn't have as much elasticity. If you fill the suit up across the width don't expect it to fit up to 6' tall.

Last Years Model - Ultra Jane
March 16, 2007

I have last years model of this suit and am going to return it to REI. I ordered the XL. I am 5'9 and 178 lbs. It fits fine but the armholes when paddling rub against my shoulder. I think they re-designed it perhaps for that reason, however NRS would not admit to that. But it does appear that the newer design has inlaid another piece of material around the armhole.

Excellent wetsuit!

I love to paddle my surfski (just started about a year ago) but hate being cold, whether it's from the air temperature/wind, water getting into the seat area, or from "going swimming"! I'd always end up cutting my paddling time short if I fell in and got cold. I tried using my triathlon wetsuit for paddling and that didn't work out (too much restriction with the long sleeves, it would bunch up at the hip crease, and the outer surface of the wetsuit would make my butt stick in the seat whether or not I used a seat pad) With this farmer jane from NRS, there's no arm restriction, my hips can pivot in the seat, I don't feel the relief zipper at all, and my butt bones appreciate the padding of the 3mm neoprene! I initially bought a Small through REI (no XS was available through them) but it was way too big -besides being baggy through the torso there were 6 inches of excess shoulder height (3 inches front, 3 inches back) Even though I can sew and alter garments, no way did I want to tackle that! So I returned it and bought the XS through Altrec and I'm glad I did! I'm 5-1, vary between 105-108#, inseam 28"...measurements are 33-26-34. The fabric stretches very well: I can get into it easily, and the ankle zippers are a big help, especially when taking off the wetsuit (I don't "feel" them either when I'm paddling.) No restriction at the armhole; I don't know about chafing at the armholes as I use a short sleeve rashguard under it vs. sleeveless rashguard or just a swimsuit top (usually I just wear compression shorts, a sport bra/swim top and a rashguard under the wetsuit) I was using NRS' hydroskin pants, a 3mm BodyGlove wetsuit vest, long sleeve hydrosilk shirt and booties over the winter, but there were days I didn't go paddling because I'm a cold wimp. This farmer jane will let me go paddling all winter! I probably will have to get a shorty, though, because I got too hot today (early June, ocean was 62F, air 65F) and I capsized on purpose just to cool off. I was hesitant to get a farmer john type wetsuit, because it seemed easier to have pants, and a top vs. a one piece (But I have found out that my core stays warmer in a one piece wetsuit, even when I get knocked off by swells/waves, but especially AFTER I get off the water: when washing off the surfski, and loading it on the car roof in the wind. I'd even consider using this snorkelling, and for swim workouts in the open ocean when I don't need sleeves. I definitely recommend this product!
