Description

Do you see shades of the Half Jacket XLJ in these Flak Jacket XLJs? At a glance the contoured Flak Jacket frame seems to be the only significant difference, but the Flak Jacket XLJ represents a new generation of sport eyewear performance. The interchangeable lenses have a permanent hydrophobic lens that repels skin oil, rain and sweat to optimize optical performance. The lenses also resist smudges and clean easier than previous eyewear, making the design better suited to endurance sports and extended climbing and backpacking. While some people found the Flak Jacket XLJ lenses easier to change than the Half Jackets, it's all really a matter of getting used to changing lenses. Like learning anything new, changing the lenses the first time around takes an extra moment or two. After that you can swap out lenses in a few moments and quickly adapt to new light conditions. The XLJ lens design offers more vertical sweep or coverage than the standard Flak Jacket designs, an essential feature for athletes with larger faces or those who tend to watch their foot placement more than others. Like the Oakley Half Jackets, the Flak Jacket XLJ has a featherweight O Matter® frame with Unobtainium earsocks, and the proven three-point fit. Unobtainium tends to grip more when wet, so you don't have to worry about your Flak Jacket XLJs giving you the slip before you reach the finish line.

Specifications

  • Distinctly contoured and lightweight O Matter® frame
  • New interchangeable Plutonite® lenses exceed ANSI Z87.1 standards for optical performance and have a special hydrophobic finish that resists moisture and skin oils
  • Sized to fit medium to large faces
  • XLJ lenses offer more vertical eye coverage than standard Flak Jacket lenses
  • All Oakley lenses block 100% of UVA, UVB and UVC rays (plus blue light)
  • Unobtainium® grips at nose and ear stems increase grip when damp
  • Patented XYZ Optics® design
  • Note: The last time we checked Oakley's polarized lenses had a wider width than other non-polarized lenses, so don't interchange these two lens types on the same frame
  • Specially woven, electro-static storage bag included

Great Sunglasses !!!
October 29, 2010

This is my first pair of the Flak Jacket and they area great !! They are replacing my Half Jackets that also are great but I just use them for running and the new pair for everyday use. The Flak Jackets are very durable and you can also replace the lenses like the half jackets. The one thing that I like better on the Flak is the sides do not stick out and they fit my face just a little better. Over all, top of the line glasses for what ever you do.

Way to go Oakley!
June 25, 2009

I purchased the Flak Jacket XLJ with the G30 lens for cycling. I know the lens is for golf, but these glasses are spectacular on the bike! The G30 lens makes the road and surrounding visually crisp and clear. I was afraid the lens would be too bright for riding in full sunlight, but they're great for all conditions. The frames on the Flak Jacket hold tight to my head without pinching or feeling tight. After riding for hours I hardly even notice these glasses on my head. However, for me the biggest advantage of these Flak Jackets is the clear field of vision on the top and bottom of the frame. I am happy there is no more sunglass frame blocking my view while riding. If you have a small to medium face and are looking for some great cycling shades I recommend the Flak Jacket XLJ and the G30 lens. Way to go Oakley and Altrec!

great delivery speed

The fastest delivery I've gotten. The glasses were just what I expected. They are wonderful on the golf course. Also, the fit is great and they are very light and comfortable.

Good sunglasses, but not nearly the best oakley
December 30, 2008

I am somewhat of a sunglasses snob, by only buying more designer and expensive types. I have owned 4 or 5 Oakleys, which is one of my favorite brands. Out of all the Oakley's I have owned, (unlike the last reviewer), this is my least favorite. The glasses are fairly flimsy and although advertised that they are high tech "O-Matter" frames, it seems like just ordinary plastic. The lenses come around the eye nicely, but still leave some space where you can see around the lens with your peripheral vision, whereas the Romeos or Minute shades, although smaller lenses, tend to not leave holes or gaps where light can get around them. Changing lenses for these glasses are a pain in the butt. They pop out easily, but take a real trick to get them back in. Sometimes it even wears out the frame or lens in order to get them to click. Although it does get easier with practice, it's still a pain, so I just never change them anymore. Also, the lenses themselves do scratch easily. I had to return one of them because they were scratched out of the box. On the plus side though... these glasses are lightweight and durable. I play sports in my oakley's a lot and my minute shades ended up breaking in half, and my romeos are too heavy to really be practical for sports... these are just right. So I do use them, despite their negative aspects. I would say in general they are just an average pair of sunglasses, but not really worth the high price tag... you don't get what you pay for.

Worth it
January 02, 2011

Got these for the holidays so haven't used much but fit great. The lens that came with them was the transitions. Good all around lens for running or mtn biking. Not dark enough for beach or sunny skiing . Even used for night boarding.

Cool Shades!
July 29, 2009

I bought a pair of dark grey with polarized fire xlj flak jacket for my friend as a birthday gift and he simply loves it! Its a perfect gift for him as he's someone who love outdoor sports such as cycling, running, basketball etc etc. Commented that he will replace his old half jacket with this new pair as the flak jacket is as lightweight and what he likes most is the coating on the lens that doesn't fog out and the fingerprints can hardly stay on it. I've so far been seeing him wearing it every time we meet.

Love This Flak Jacket
June 29, 2011

I simply love Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ. I have been using these sunglasses for a couple of years. These sunglasses stay snug on my head and have never fallen off. They never feel tight or squeeze my head either. They have a permanent coating on the lens that prevents rain and sweat from building up - it works. I hike a lot and go long distance - these sunglasses perform well. Flak Jacket XLJ gives me maximum eye protection while looking great.

Pros: tough, lightweight, covers my eyes, style

The best sunglasses for active sports
January 20, 2012

My review refer to polarized version since I use only polarized lenses. Just perfect sunglasses. If you need sunglasses for sport just go and get one. In fact I owned 3 pair of those - I lost my first pair on GR5 trip in Europe - so I come back to US upset and immediately ordered another one - sigh, what you can do - but there are so great that I went ahead and ordered another pair for my wife as well. When slightly expensive but you get what you pay for: beautifully crafted and engineered piece of sunware from the company that stand for their products. If I will need another pair - I will not hesitate for a second.

Pros: polarized lenses, interchangeable lenses, nice ventilation, durability is awesome, Cons: price

perfect gift for my hubby
October 13, 2011

i bought this sunglass for my hubby who just bought a racer and going to start some serious cycling. Though he already had the half jacket oakley, i thought this white one with the flak jacket will be more stylish and provide more protection from sun. In fact, this is lighter, which is good. Of course, he loves it cos all his other oakleys are bronze and black. And going to put it to test this saturday. Hope it will server him well.

Awesome as Usual
January 17, 2011

Been an Oakley guy forever and have always loved their shades... the Flak Jacket XLJ is no exception. The are super comfortable, can take a beating, and look great. I've always liked the XLJ lens shape better and have them in my Half Jackets. I like the bigger size of the Flak Jackets and overall coverage they offer. Nothing beats Oakley. Love how easy it is to clean them and pop out the lenses if need be. Overall.... THEY ROCK!!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, baller style

Flak Jacket XLJ a wise purchase
July 07, 2011

I wanted a pair of sunglasses that provided a lot of eye coverage. Many lenses are wrap types, but do not have much vertical width. The XLJ are what I needed. The optics are crystal clear. I find my eyes are relaxed and open, you don't have to squint. The XLJ is very restful to wear whether you are biking or driving. This is my first pair of Oakley eyewear, but I am so impressed that I now have my wife looking for a pair as well.

absolutley awesome
January 12, 2008

these glasses are insane, ive owned various $20 sunglasses over the past few years and finally bit the bullet. i bought the flak jackets after doing some research and i absolutley love them. everything from the lens coating to the fit of the glasses.

Love my Oakleys
May 29, 2011

I've worn Oakleys for most of my life. I briefly switched to Maui Jim's, which are still great, but nothing compared to these. I debated on the half and flak jacket but found the half to be too small for me. The Flak Jacket XLJ's are light, comfortable and perform extremely well. Hardshell case is a tremendous plus when travelling. Lost 2-3 previous pairs due from packing in the cleaning bag in my carry-on.

Sunglasses for your active lifestyle...
September 15, 2011

I recently bought a pair of Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ sunglasses from Altrec. As always, Altrec had what I wanted in stock and shipped trouble free! I bought these Flak Jackets for my wife as she has become an avid runner and wanted a pair of sunglasses/eye protection for those long, sunny, windy days. We opted for the XLJ lenses as they are smaller and fit her small / Asian face a lot better. The larger lens would sit on her cheek which really bothered her, but these XLJ lens solves the problem. The Flak Jackets seem to have a little “give” as they don’t feel like they are squeezing your head in. So if you’re looking for some cool looking, active lifestyle sunglasses. The Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ is the way to go!

Top Quality
December 28, 2008

I've tried buying all sorts of other sunglasses and nothing has ever fit this well! I know you're not supposed to test the lenses and stuff (like put a sharpie on the lens), but I did these sunglasses deliver. Can't wait to use them again

Best All Around Oaks
April 13, 2009

I love the Flak Jacket XLJ's. This is my second pair and they can't be beat. My first pair is still in perfect condition, I just wanted a second pair in all black. They offer more coverage then the Half Jackets and are more comfortable. I love the Half Jackets too but these are better in my opinion. They also don't flare out on the sides like the Half Jackets, which some people don't like. And nothing beats how easy it is to pop the lenses in and out. Great shades all around!!

Flak Jacket XLJ Sunglasses - Review
June 27, 2009

Awesome glasses! I was back and forth considering whether to order a new pair of Maui Jim glasses to replace a pair that got melted in my car or to try out a pair of Oakley XLJ. I ordered the XLJ from Altrec and they arrived just in time to use them on a vacation whitewater rafting in Ft. Collins CO. Hands down the best glasses I have ever owned. Cut the glare on the water and stayed secure on my head despite the pounding spray. Thanks Altrec!

Better coverage than non-XLJ version. But
September 18, 2011

I prefer the black frame and lense regular flak jackets appearance wise. I'm going to try the polarized Oakley bottlecap model not bottlecap XL version. The non-XL version bottlecap is almost identical to Flak Jacket but cheaper for polarized lenses. Plus, there's no rubber to ruin long term like the Flak Jackets.

Pros: quality, Cons: rubber

all purpose sunglasses
June 13, 2008

I bought these to replace the Half Jacket XLJ Sunglasses that I lost on a trail run. They are definitely better than the Half Jackets. They cover the eyes better and they're a more comfortable fit. They're a little expensive but so far they are worth it.
