Wow! When Osprey decides to redesign their backpacks, they don't just tack on a couple new bells and whistles. The Osprey Aether 70 backpack now features a rebuilt AirScape suspension system, custom molded hipbelt technology, and the IsoForm shoulder harness, available in four sizes. This system truly gives the backpacker a personal fit. The AirScape suspension system provides superior breathablility and ultra-comfortable pack to body contact while dual 7075 AL rods along both edges of the framesheet transfer the load to the custom fit hipbelt. The Osprey Aether 70 backpack carries the usual assortment of camping gear in an organized, efficient manner. Removable sleeping pad straps are ready when needed but can be removed for more streamlined packing. A sleeping bag compartment opens nice and wide for easy load division. Furthermore, side compression straps, dual access side pockets, and a deep stretch woven exterior front pocket hold all sorts of things in such a manner that they don't clang or flop around. A refreshing sip of water is only a nod of the head away, thanks to dual exit ports for a hydration tube. And when you finally reach camp and want to head out on a reconnaissance mission, the floating top pocket and hipbelt can be removed from the pack body and joined together to make a fanny pack. The Osprey Aether 70 backpack is designed to comfortably carry loads of 40 to 50 lbs. For larger loads be sure to check out the Osprey Aether 85 backpack and for smaller loads be sure to check out the Osprey Aether 60 backpack.
Perfect in every way!!!!
Bought 2 of these for my son and I to use on a 11 day trek through Philmont in New Mexico. The size was perfect for our gear! It swallows gear when needed but closes down nicely for shorter trips and fits great to the body. Would not change a thing!
Most Excelant Pack
I have to say Christi in customer service was a super star in getting me this pack. I got it two days before going to Emigrant Wilderness. Most comfortable pack ever. I used the top as a day pack and it worked as designed. I read all the instructions twice to really let all the options sink into my noggin. One thing Osprey left out was that the hip belt can be moved up or down about 3 inches (I noticed this after using the belt for the day pack). I am 6' 3" with a long torso and when I put it all the way to the bottom for the trip out, it was EVEN more comfy!! LOVE this Pack.
Great all-around pack
Perfect for a long-weekend camping trip. Lightweight, comfortable (even when fully loaded), and plenty of room for all your camping gear. Plus, it held-up very well during my last hiking trip - even though it got quite a bit of use and abuse.

Legit Pack!!
Well I just used my pack for the first time this weekend and mostly all I can say is GREATNESS! It met my every need from being big enough to being comfortable and being weather/snow proof. I used it for a weekend trip, hiked in Friday at night then about 5 miles Saturday and then nearly 5 miles after it had snowed all night. Everything stayed dry with the snow that had fallen on the pack from falling off trees. I got the orange and I'm not a huge fan of super bright colors but this pack looks great and works even better! I guess if there was any down-side it was that the shoulder straps could be a bit more comfortable, but I can partially blame it on my body being that I am not super bulky/meaty around the collarbone or shoulder area, but being a hiker I pushed through the little bit of discomfort and everything was alright! I would recommend this pack to all! Enjoy!
Super pack
Pack is very adaptable to changing loads over the course of an extended backpacking trip. I would recommend it to serious backpacker who are concerned about weight.
Perfect Pack
Hiked all over Southern Mexico with this pack and it held everything I needed and was very comfortable. I definitely recommend this pack or any Osprey pack for that matter.
Very very comfortable
Took it on its first trial run. I was very impressed with this bag's many tightening straps that held the load very steady. Also, the daylight attachable attaches very securly and is very convenient.
great pack
it holds a lot, without being too bulky. i bought it for my friend who was moving to italy and he loved it. found it to be a very efficient pack for his travels.
Comfortable!
I have an Osprey Atmos 50 backpack for one to three nighters but I could not get my big bear canister inside. The Aether 70 can hold the bigger bear canister and is the pack I use when I'm gone for 3 to 6 nights and I need to carry a big bear canister. I used this pack for a 6 nighter in Emigrant Wilderness this last July and was very pleased with how it handled and the weight it carried (45lbs)... a very comfortable pack
excellent
hiked ~ 5000 ft(9000 - 14,000ft) in Bolivia on first use of pack without having belt custom molded. Was able to adjust pack for extreme comfort.
I would recommend highly.
Great Pack For A Great Price
The Aether 70 is the perfect size pack for weekend/week trips. The weight distribution makes 40-50 lbs feel extremely comfortable. I love being able to use the top pouch as a lumbar pack. You are buying two great packs for the price of one when you get the Aether 70. A lightweight and durable pack, well worth the money.
Wow, what a great pack
I was really impressed with how it fit to my body. There are lighter packs, but I feel that because this is such a good fit, some of the weight hides itself in comfort. The materials used are burly. I like the stretch pocket to store wet stuff. Solid hipbelt and suspension system. Great price, especially on sale.
altrec employee raves about findng it at altrec. real helpful
real nice to have an altrec employee (Mike Rose @ mike.rose @ altrec.com) raving about being able to "find" it all altrec.com.
bet that was a tough find.
Very light and well designed.
I used this pack on a backcountry trip in Yosemite and it performed great. I didn't mold the hip-belt, so I encountered a little bruising of the old hip bones, but not as much as my old pack. I'm going to try the molding to see if it helps.
Overall, a very well-designed pack. The mesh pockets stretch to hold just about everything, the latches and buckles are intuitive, the size is perfect for multi-day hikes, and the convertible top eliminates the need to carry a day-pack. My only complaint is that the suspension squeaks -- a lot.
Great, Comfortable Pack on weekend trips!
I bought this pack to take on two to four night treks into the woods. It is well constructed, rugged, and very comfortable. I researched several different packs to determine what fit my needs best. This pack was a little on the small side in terms of storage but I couldn't pass up its well thought out construction. It is very light. Fits all the gear I need for a weekend trip even when I pack uneccessary items. For trips over 3 nights you definitely need to be concious of what you are taking but you can make this pack work. I used it throughout the Adirondacks this past spring and was very pleased.
The hip belt can be heat molded to your form (which I recomend) and the top lid cover converts to a lumbar pack with the hip belt. Very cool feature when you don't feel like packing an additional day pack on base camp trips. Lumbar pack has enough space for day treks and since it uses the hip belt it is really comfortable. It also holds your platypus which works well.
I have also found Osprey great to work with if you have a warranty issue or need replacement parts.
Looking forward to more trips with this pack.
I have been nothing but impressed with the Aether 70. I just returned from a 4 day trip in Maine and found that this pack carried 40-45 lbs very comfortably. I have not had the hip belt customized and like a previous reviewer am not sure how this pack could get more comfortable. It is strong and supportive, easily adjusted and solid. I logged long days over rough terrain and have nothing but praise. In fact, I looked forawrd to my trek back down just so I could carry it again to make sure I had not been dreaming. I hadn't. Two hiking buddies are now looking at new Aethers......I made them give mine back.
Great pack, Innovative Design.
This pack is new this year and is hard to find due to demand and distribution problems at Osprey. I was happy to find it at Altec.
I bought the Aether 70 because my ultralight pack was ultrawimpy. For a pound more, you get a super supportive frame system and a real hipbelt that can carry 40-50 lb loads for weeklong trips. I took it to the local REI and they kindly baked the hipbelt to custom fit my waist. Nice.
I tested it out on a 3 night trip near Tioga Pass in Yosemite, and it felt great on 2500 foot climb.
Im not sure where the other reviewer gets the cheap material comment. I think the fabric used is fairly heavy-duty and better that material used in most lightweight packs.
My only negative comment would be about the top lid/lumbar pack feature. It's kind of a pain to get the hipbelt off and onto the top lid, and barely worth the effort for the small top lid capacity. Overall, a great pack at a great price.
Innovative Design will make this pack a top seller.
I had trouble finding this pack anywhere due to high demand and distribution problems withh Osprey. Was very happy to find Altec had them.
The problem with many "ultralight" pack is they offer no support. A thin, single stay and a flimsy hipbelt offer little support when hauling a week's worth of food. For an extra pound the Aether 70 provides a solid suspension system and honest-to-God hipbelt.I took the pack into the local REI and they kindly "baked" my hipbelt to conform to my waist. Sweet.
Im not sure where other reviewers get the "cheap fabric" comments. It's heavy-duty compared to many of the fabrics used on lightweight packs. I would trust this pack on any trip.
The only criticism I have is with the top pocket/lumbar pack feature. It's a pain to pull out the hipbelt and fit it into the top pocket. I prefer the top lid waist straps that are sewn-in on my Gregory pack.
Overall, the Aether 70 is a great choice for a lightweight pack that can do it all.
LOVED IT
I got this pack primarily for use rock climbing. Did some homework and found Osprey had an excellent reputation and tried some on in stores (this pack was not available in stores I went to) and I liked the suspension and back air-mesh. I got a medium size and right away found that the hip belt had to be cinched down all the way to fit my waist (about size 31). Still, it fit and after making a few adjustments to the shoulder straps, I'd say it was a perfect fit.
The thing I was looking for in a pack was one that I could access very easily. For example, if I wanted to just access my climbing rope or just my rack, I could open the pack at either end. Also, the two could be separated. The sleeping bag compartment accomplishes this. With rope, rack, water, layers and food, my pack weighed in close to 40 pounds.
The suspension provided by Osprey gave me no problems carrying the weight. I got the pack just before a trip to Yosemite and didn't bother with the "custom molding" hip belt since I thought it fit just fine. Can't imagine how the fit could improve. Very comfortable and there's many adjustment possibilities. I haven't looked in to it, but wondered if you got the belt custom molded - what if your waist shape changed?
During my trip, the longest hike I did was about 1 1/2 hours, but it was pretty steep and hot. The pack was fully loaded and I had no problems. I also climbed with the pack on (3 pitch). Initially my climbing helmet kept bumping in to the pack when I looked up, but I just loosened the top straps used to pull the pack snug to your shoulders and the problem went away. When climbing with the pack, most of the stuff typically on the inside was on the outside. Again, no problem because of the many straps on the pack that you can use to cinch it down.
I took off the top pouch and used the hip belt as it says you can for short hikes. The top pouch is large enough to hold my 100 oz. Camelbak, a small first aid kit and other odds & ends with MUCH room left over. I was surprised at how comfortable it was. Removing the hip belt isn't all that bad but you have to dig between the belt and pack to separate the Velcro. I don't know another way for them to design it, so I guess it has to be that way. The feature worked out great.
If there's any drawbacks to this pack, it might be the weight. But that's a non issue for me. I wanted something more sturdy and these materials do the trick. The compartments separate my rope, rack, clothing layers, first aid stuff, maps/books, lights, etc. very well. It's one of the few packs that I found I can reach the two exterior lower side pockets without removing the pack because of the holes.
The only other possible improvement that I could think of was if they did like Camelbak and created a separate access for the hydration system. As it is, you have to access the hydration through the top and if the pack is really full, it could be inconvenient and you might have to remove some stuff. But as far as I know, most if not all packs that offer a hydration pouch are designed this way (again, with the exception of Camelbak).
The pack is slightly large for my needs, but again, I wanted the organization options and couldn't find it in any other packs except the Cerro Torre 47L. That pack was slightly too small for my needs and wouldn't work in colder conditions because I wouldn't be able to bring along too many layers.
This is the best pack I've ever owned and I'm looking forward to having it burried with me.
You can't go wrong with this one!
I love my pack. I would like more external/quick access pockets. I have taken it on several 3 day trips and it is just great. I love that I can pack it out or sinch it down for a lighter load. We have three Osprey's in my family and we are all very happy with our packs.
Versatile/Comfortable Pack
Just returned from a 5 day, backcountry,Yosemite trip. Loaded Aether 70 with just under 40lbs. of gear including bear canister with no space issue. I am 5'6" and 140lbs., male. My torso measurement is 18.5". I purchased a medium which puts me on the smaller side of the scale. I was wearing the pack probably lower on the hips then recommended but needed to so that there was no gap between my shoulders and the shoulder straps. I like my pack tight. End result, blisters just below the belt line on my hips. Adjusted pack to ride higher on the hips thus solving problem. The pack, even when packed full, maintains a thin/tall profile that I found helpful on narrow paths and switchbacks. Quality and craftmanship of pack appears top notch. I have yet to have the belt custom molded and plan on doing so before the next adventure. I would recommend this pack to anyone, just make sure sizing is correct.
Versatile, light, and comfortable, but not very sturdy.
Many great reviews convinced me to purchase this backpack. Although I am generally happy with it, not all of my expectations were fulfilled.
I used Aether 70 for a 10-day hiking trip in Eastern European mountains. First thing I noticed was that the pack was very light (+) and that it contained numerous compression straps that allowed me to adjust its size for a wide spectrum of loads (+). The suspension is wonderful and the pack felt great on my back, due to the patented air-padding they use (+). However, the fabric the whole backpack is made of feels a bit thin and "cheap." In fact, I noticed a small tear on the inside of the pack, where it was chronically stressed during the hike (-).
Osprey also boasts with the hipbelts that come with their packs. These may be great if you have them professionally adjusted for your partucilar waist, but having not done that, the belt felt awkward (-). Also, the osprey buckles had a tendency to spontanously open up on me during the hike (-), despite me making sure to fully click them together.
I do admit that I might have over-loaded the pack, and that a 10-day hike would merit Aether 85, rather than 70, altough I don't think I carried more than 40lbs during my trip. Anyway, I believe that Osprey Aether 70 is a wonderful backpack for short-term (<1 week) outdoor activities. It is incredibly versatile and light, but perhaps not as sturdy and reliable as some of the other packs in it's cathegory.
Step 1 - Pack Sizing
All Osprey packs, save the transit bags, are available in multiple sizes to fit a range of torso lengths. To find your torso length, have a friend measure your back along the spine from the level of your iliac crest (the top of your hipbones) to your C7 (the knobby bone at the base of your neck).
Step 2 - Hipbelt Sizing
To determine your hipbelt size measure around your hips, not your waist. A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug; after all it will be carrying the bulk of the pack's weight. The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the pads when securely tightened.

ErgoPull
Nearly all Osprey hipbelts use an exclusive ErgoPull design. It creates mechanical advantage to provide extra leverage in cinching down the hipbelt. The ErgoPull design also draws tension along the top and bottom of the belt, not through the center, so it distributes pressure more evenly over the padding and relieves direct pressure on the hipbones.
Step 3 - Harness
Osprey Crescent & Luna, Aether & Ariel and Waypoint packs offer interchangeable shoulder harnesses. Harness sizing usually corresponds to pack size, but your best bet is to try one on. A properly fit harness should terminate 2 to 3" beneath the armpit. Webbing should not touch the body. By breaking the hook and loop connection and sliding the harness up and down the backpanel the torso length can be adjusted up to 3". (see illustration).

| Women's | WXS | WSM | WM | WL |
Step 4 - Overall Fit
Once you have the correct size pack, harness and hipbelt, and the torso length set properly, it's time to put some weight in the pack (20 to 30 pounds of well distributed weight will do) and dial in the fit. First, snug down the hipbelt and harness. Connect the sternum strap (A) - position it about 2 inches below your collarbones and snug it down lightly. Finally, tighten the load lifter straps to draw the load solidly against your back. The lift straps (B) should come off your shoulders at a 45 to 60 degree angle in Osprey's ReCurve and Ethereal Suspension packs. In other models these straps serve more as compression straps and ride flatter; they may even angle downwards.
In a good fit, there should be no pressure points and no gaps between your body and the pack. With Osprey's ReCurve packs, final tweaking may involve custom fitting the aluminum stays to your back.
