Backpacker Magazine Gear Review 2009

Named the "Top Expedition Style Backpack" by Backpacker Magazine in a 2009 issue.

Description

Sized to accommodate a week's worth of backpacking or mountaineering gear, the Osprey Argon 85 backpack features an ergonomically enhanced suspension and hipbelt design specifically made for men. While most hiking, backpacking and climbing packs are all about stowing gear, Osprey's Argon 85 combines those storage options with a supportive AirScape backpanel, BioForm A/X features and a ReCurve Suspension for an exceptional fit. The Osprey Argon 85 also has an AquaSource ReCurve hydration pouch that connects either to the backpack's internal backpanel or on top of contents inside the pack. Like other Argon series backpacks, the Argon 85 has a removable top pocket that doubles as a lumbar pack for short excursions around your backcountry campsite. Lycra/nylon blended stretch panels along the front and side pockets easily expand to accommodate additional camping and outdoor gear without straining zippers and straps.

Argon 85 Backpack 4.8 5 8 8
great bag i bought this pack after completing a section of the Georgia AT, the pack I had was horrible at best. So when I got back I started researching for a better pack, after many hours of reading reviews I chose this Argon 85 due to the high reviews along with the options. The pack arrived and my first thoughts were wow now this is a pack for me, I'm a big boy and I knew this pack was for me. The pack is a little heavy but nothing that can't be overlooked when it does everything Osprey says it can do, very well built, plenty of options and looks great. The feel is like no other pack, load it up and start your favorite trail with no worries of this thing not holding up. I gave it four stars only because after ordering I found out that even if you order an XL you will still get a large hip belt and a large shoulder strap, again I am a big boy and I am having to pay for the shipment to Osprey to exchange the large out for the XL. Now with that said the employees at Osprey are very friendly and will do whatever they need to do to correct an issue but a bummer that I have to wait for the exchange and again paying for the exchange when they should have shipped the XL the first time. Great gear hauling pack I just used the pack and had it filled, and it was easy to carry. It made 50 lbs feel like 30 in other packs. Got the hip-belt molded for no charge at an Osprey dealer. I thought my Baltoro 70 was a solid pack, but this pack is even more confortable for carrying heavy loads. This is my first Osprey product, but I think I am hooked. June 2, 2011
Very good backpack The backpack has been working very well, and is very spacious with good quality. Eeasy to use the backpack. I chose the XL version, it was almost too long, but it works. The fabric seems to be strong. The top can be used as a lumbar pack and it's actually works. December 10, 2010
Excellent Pack for Heavy Loads I recently used this pack in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Along with the usual gear and food, we had to pack in our water. I had well over 50 pounds in the pack. It was relatively comfortable (if carrying heavy loads on your back can ever be called comfortable) and very stable--far better than my previous pack. The padding and suspension system are excellent. It holds a lot of stuff and the main compartment is relatively accessible. I like the stretchy mesh pocket on the outside--great spot for my crocs or rain gear. Small gripes: 1)the utility of the large front zipper pocket is reduced because it is under the compression straps and not easy to get to quickly; 2) the hip belt (which is super comfortable) lacks the handy mesh zipper pockets on some Osprey models and does not even have any lash points. Other negative is the price--it's expensive. But the pack may be worth it for the comfort and stability it provides, especially if you need to carry heavy loads. February 15, 2010
Well worth it I've been backpacking for many years with an inexpensive external frame pack and have suffered snapped shoulder straps, a poorly fitting hip belt, and excess pack weight for far too long. The Osprey is so light for its capacity and is also very well laid out. The fit of the harness is phenomenal (and I haven't even gone through the thermal fitting) and the pack rides well with loads both large and small due to the excellent compression system. What more can I say? It's a great pack that's as easy on the trail as it is on the eyes. I only wish that I would have gotten one earlier. The fact that Osprey stands by their products with a no BS warranty is certainly reassuring as well. November 6, 2009
Argon 85 is nice.... Big and comfortable. June 9, 2009
Wow I have been holding off from writing this review until I actually got to use this pack. I went to Rocky Mountain National Park over Spring Break to hike and camp in the backcountry. This pack was amazing! I bought a knock-off brand several years ago. It never took long for my old pack to become uncomfortable. And after any hike, I was always sore. This wasn't the case with the Osprey. The molded hip belt and the suspension system made for the most comfortable hike I have ever had. This pack is worth every penny. I loved this pack and I am an Osprey fan for life! April 2, 2009
Great Pack Just got back from Aconcagua and the pack preformed really well. Most comfortable pack I have used. Trained with up to 65 pounds in it. No sore spots. Used the lid top fanny pack on the 18 hike out and it was just as comforable as the pack. Only wish the side pouch for a water bottle was a little larger. The Camelback .75 liter bottle fit in there fine. February 4, 2009
