Osprey Packs Atmos 65 Backpack - 28205

Expanding on the success of their Atmos 50 backpack, recipient of a 2005 Outside magazine Gear of the Year Award, Osprey recently introduced the larger capacity Atmos 65 backpack. To handle the bigger loads associated with gear intensive glacier climbs and winter camping trips, both the aluminum stays and hipbelt have been beefed-up for better load transfer and comfort. The 3D tensioned, breathable mesh backpanel offers superb airflow through the back contact zone, making the adventure seeker less prone to overheating. The Osprey Atmos 65 backpack carries loads of up to 35 lbs. (15.86 kgs.) with ease, and with an assortment of convenient pockets and straps, keeping all this gear organized is a cinch. Although the pack is classified as a top loader, the main compartment is also accessible through a zippered opening in the left front pocket.

  • Key fabrics: durable and lightweight 210-denier broken twill Cordura® high tenacity nylon, 210-denier double-ripstop Cordura® high tenacity nylon, stretch woven nylon with Lycra
  • Beefed up AirSpeed suspension consisting of twin 6005-T6 10mm aluminum alloy stays, titanium torsion rods, and a 3D contoured breathable mesh backpanel with lumbar support area
  • Thermoformed and perforated waffle pattern shoulder straps and hipbelt
  • ErgoPull hipstraps distribute pressure evenly over the entire hipbelt
  • Top loading access with floating top pocket
  • Sleeping bag compartment with divider
  • Dual water resistant zip front pockets with zip access to main pack through left front pocket
  • Convenient welded stretch woven front pocket with adjustable closure strap
  • Stretch woven side pockets
  • Zippered mesh pockets on hipbelt
  • Backpanel airspace or internal hydration pocket options with hydration tubing portholes
  • Adjustable side compression / ski straps
  • Dual ice axe loops with tie-offs
  • Osprey Excessory Raincover compatible
  • Removable sleeping pad straps
  • Capacity: 3,800 cu. in. (62 l) in small, 4,000 cu. in. (65 l) in medium, 4,200 cu. in. (68 l) in large
  • Weight: 3 lbs. 7 oz. (1.56 kgs.) in small, 3 lbs. 10 oz. (1.64 kgs.) in medium, 3 lbs. 13 oz. (1.73 kgs.) in large

A great organizer bag
The tall version really fits my 6' 2" frame well, hip belts snug down securely and the belt pockets take a small a camera, sunscreen, lip balm and a half pound bag of trail mix. The option for hydration bladder inside or outside (in mesh area) works well and increases the internal volume, which is limited for rigid objects due to the curved suspension system. Don't expect to get any size bear proof container inside this bag. I used it all winter, with snowshoes, ice ax and crampons strapped to the outside and with loads up to 29lbs the bag and I traveled comfortably up 6000 foot peaks on 8 hour, 12 mile hikes. The front shovel pocket is roomy enough for wet rain gear and the top pocket ideal for gear that is needed quickly, like goggles, shell mitts and headgear. The compression straps and front pockets allow smaller loads to be carried on day trips without the bag appearing oversize for your summer day hike, and at 3lbs 12 oz its no burden to take it along. A very robust bag that shows no signs of wear and tear after squeezing past countless spruce trees bushwhacking in New Hampshire.

PERFECT!
This was bought for our son for Christmas. As a 3rd yr college student, when he gets a chance to getaway, he loves to go hiking, camping, rock-climbing... the usual live rough and rugged attitude stuff... Anyways, he put that pack on his back and it did not come off all day Christmas Day!!! He said it felt like part of him! He used it the following week to go to a 5-day conference and it carried all he needed instead of a big ole' suitcase or gymbag. THANKS for a GREAT Value too!!

Sizing Chart

Back Measurement Step 1 - Pack Sizing

All Osprey packs, save the transit bags, are available in multiple sizes to fit a range of torso lengths. To find your torso length, have a friend measure your back along the spine from the level of your iliac crest (the top of your hipbones) to your C7 (the knobby bone at the base of your neck).

Step 2 - Hipbelt Sizing

To determine your hipbelt size measure around your hips, not your waist. A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug; after all it will be carrying the bulk of the pack's weight. The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the pads when securely tightened.

ErgoPull ErgoPull

Nearly all Osprey hipbelts use an exclusive ErgoPull design. It creates mechanical advantage to provide extra leverage in cinching down the hipbelt. The ErgoPull design also draws tension along the top and bottom of the belt, not through the center, so it distributes pressure more evenly over the padding and relieves direct pressure on the hipbones.

Harness Step 3 - Harness

Osprey Crescent & Luna, Aether & Ariel and Waypoint packs offer interchangeable shoulder harnesses. Harness sizing usually corresponds to pack size, but your best bet is to try one on. A properly fit harness should terminate 2 to 3" beneath the armpit. Webbing should not touch the body. By breaking the hook and loop connection and sliding the harness up and down the backpanel the torso length can be adjusted up to 3". (see illustration).

Women's WXS WSM WM WL

Step 4 - Overall Fit

Once you have the correct size pack, harness and hipbelt, and the torso length set properly, it's time to put some weight in the pack (20 to 30 pounds of well distributed weight will do) and dial in the fit. First, snug down the hipbelt and harness. Connect the sternum strap (A) - position it about 2 inches below your collarbones and snug it down lightly. Finally, tighten the load lifter straps to draw the load solidly against your back. The lift straps (B) should come off your shoulders at a 45 to 60 degree angle in Osprey's ReCurve and Ethereal Suspension packs. In other models these straps serve more as compression straps and ride flatter; they may even angle downwards.

In a good fit, there should be no pressure points and no gaps between your body and the pack. With Osprey's ReCurve packs, final tweaking may involve custom fitting the aluminum stays to your back.
