Amazing Travel Backpack
July 09, 2011

The Farpoint 55 is a great travel pack that combines easy panel loading, good organization features, detachable day pack, burly top and side carrying handles, and a very good harness that can be protected while in transit with an integrated cover. It is also a great size for a carry-on. While it may technically be an inch or two too big for a flight carry-on, if you detach the daypack and store that under the seat in front of you, the main backpack will easily fit in the overhead compartment. I have the small/medium and it is smaller than most of the rolling bags most people carry-on. I am guessing the medium/large would also fit as a carry-on. The harness can carry a decent amount of weight and the hip belt is substantial enough to properly support the backpack. It has a more supportive harness than the Osprey Porter series, but that series is also more affordable. The good harness is key if you are wandering around a foreign city trying to find a place to stay, or if your travels also include some hiking. The day bag is on the small size, but it can hold a 13" laptop or hydration pack, a DSLR, a light jacket, and have some room to spare. I really would not want it much bigger, or it would mess up the balance of the weight on the pack when it is attached to the back. The outer bottle holders will hold a half liter bottle or so, but will not hold a liter nalgene very well. You can also clip the bag to the front harness, which is good if you want to watch out for your valuables and keep them in front of you in a crowded place. When in transit, you can cover the harness with a zippered, integrated harness cover. It also has handles to grab onto while you are stuffing it into the overhead, or going from place to place. Also, there are not an over abundance of unnecessary straps hanging off the backpack and the panel loading system allows easy access to your clothes, gear, etc. Honestly, I cannot come up with any recommended improvements - this is a very well designed bag. Also, Osprey has an awesome repair / return policy, not that I have had any problems with their gear. Get out there!

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, size
