Kode 30. Great pack!
January 14, 2011

So overall this is an excellent pack for strong days out in the back country when things are cold & snow covered. Pros: 1) I'm a thick lad (240lbs 6'2) and the Large fits beautifully which is rare given packs aren't long enough for my torso. 2) can carry anything. I don't really ski, but snow shoe alot. Being able to slap those bad boys on your back when you need to switch to crampons is not something many packs can do comfortably 3) Love the in should strap hose cover, makes it almost impossible for your hose/bit valve to freeze 4) Wet/dry storage is key and the overall layout of the internal pockets is good. I actually use the "ski tool" section to carry camera lenses, works well Cons: 1) If your constantly going in and out of your bag or putting skis and the like on and off it can be a bit fussy given the lashing mechanism. Bottom line: great winter day pack if you need to carry big boy toys in snowy anywhere!

Pros: Build quality, Performance, nice look'n too!

Versatile
May 05, 2012

The back loading actually works great especially for loading a water bladder. And the hydration tube feeding in the right side shoulder strap, built-in external helmet retainer is just a few of the cool features that makes this pack really functional. Size and dimensions makes it a great lightweight summit pack. Been using Osprey packs since the mid 90's. Tried a lot of other packs along the way but keep coming back to Osprey.....they just build great packs.

I just recently bought this pack for a trip to Jackson Hole. I have tried to fit my powder skis, and they fit perfectly! I use this pack for everyday (I ride my bike to work and use it as a sport bag) and I can have my lunch, my sport clothes, my gym shoes, etc... a lot of stuff inside. You can adjust the dead volume of this pack. I love the way you can organize everything inside and also the color! It is thin and quite light so I think it will work just perfect for those ski days... It is also tough so it looks like it will last a whole life... I would recommend this pack for anyone who is looking for a 1 one-day pack for backcountry skiing!

Excellent pack for full day
February 08, 2011

This is an excellent pack for a full day in the backcountry, both size-wise and capacity-wise. I'm 5-foot-10, 150 pounds; the medium is a perfect fit. Nice to have some options there with size. The separate pockets for wet/avy gear and dry gear are bonus. The wet pack is literally a snap as far as entry. There's plenty of room for the AviTEch G3 shovel (just enough length for the handle), probe and such. The dry pack is rear entry, again with ample room for down sweater. I have yet to experiment with either the hydration pocket/sleeve or the ski-carrying capability. For trips of more than one day -- I dunno. For the minimalist perhaps. Might want 30-plus. However, for a full day with a full complement of gear, this pack fares well.

Pros: Great design, Ease of use, wet/dry gear pockets

great pack
May 15, 2012

I love this pack and have been using it for almost a year now. I used it this winter and the rear access dry compartment holds a lot of stuff. At first I was concerned about the load lifter straps holding most of the weight but I have really overloaded this pack and it has held everything really well. I also use it when I am traveling and it holds about two days worth of clothes as well as an additional pair of shoes. The avy pocket in the front is very well organized and has no problem holding a BD shovel and BCA probe. I really like the ski straps on the side because they seem very durable and havent shown any wear. If you are considering this pack...GO FOR IT All in all I like this pack so much that I bought the Kode 22 to take to work everyday! BTW, I am 6 ft 3 in and 200 pounds and the large fits perfectly.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, ospry has an amazing warranty

Osprey Kode = Great Pack
January 25, 2011

I bought this pack for my boyfriend as a birthday gift and he loved it. He is 6 feet tall, weighs about 175, has medium broad shoulders, and the medium fit him perfectly. It has compartments and gear loops for everything. He especially loved the wet and dry compartments that keep your stuff separate. It also has an insulated hydration sleeve so that your water line doesn't freeze. The compartments on the waistbelt are pretty useful too so that you have easy access to essentials. He plans to use this for cat-skiing and out of bounds skiing and his snowboard fits well on it. Also Osprey has a great warranty in place where they will fix any of their backpacks, no matter when it was purchased. Overall, he loved this product and feels that it is very useful and the best ski pack he ever owned.

Pros: Great design, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

Amazing
January 25, 2010

Osprey did a nice job with this pack, you will read other reviews here and there about the difficult main pocket access. I did not understand the design until I fully loaded the pack. When fully loaded with a snowboard or skis the back access is perfect, and undoing two, non load bearing clips is no hassle compared to battling with attached gear. When not loaded, you can use the back access similar to side access by only unzipping it the length of the pack. Or you can undo only one clip to access the main pocket. Avalanche gear pocket is really nice and easily accessible, the goggle pocket is huge (I put a large pro DSLR camera in it). Snowboard cary is nice, with reinforced straps to avoid edges damaging the straps/pack. The ski cary is nice too, the A frame is the best, and the bottom ski cary straps fit my friends Chopsticks that are 148 tip & tail and 128 underfoot, so they'll fit super-fat skis. Helmet cary is surprisingly useful and effective. Insulated hydration tube sleeve is nice. I haven't used the ice ax holder, but seems ok. Hip-belt pockets are perfect. Very comfortable, carries and distributes weight well. Measure yourself correctly, go to osprey's website for sizing if you have too. I'm 5'11", I use a Medium and my friend is 6' and is also a medium, GET THE RIGHT SIZE. If you do, this pack is like a glove, even fully loaded. You will not be disappointed. Worth every cent. Very light, tough, good thought out design and well made in every facet. One of the better snow-packs on the market.

Snowshoe compatible.
February 19, 2011

So far, this has been the perfect bag for day trip hiking in the snow w/snowshoes strapped on the back. My snowshoes strap on easily and the waterproof compartment is perfect for extra layers and safety gear - you just have to be willing to take the pack off to access this compartment. The exterior non-waterproof compartments are great for my microspikes, food, sunglasses (there is a special sunglass/goggles compartment), etc and I can still access them w/my snowshoes strapped on. Since I have MSR lightening ascent snowshoes, I am keeping an eye on the straps to make sure they don't fray - the reinforcing on the straps doesn't protect them from the edges of my snowshoe (clearly designed for a snowboard). The only issue I've had w/this pack is that you need to be careful of how you load it to assure it doesn't get lumpy against you back. If you have a 2L cammelback bladder, it pushes into the middle of your back inappropriately. I've found that using my 2L bladder and filling it less keeps the back piece of this pack smoothly fitted to my back. You also need to be sure you don't 'stuff' your layers into the main compartment as this will make the fit against your back lumpy as well. Loading the pack for comfort isn't a big issue after you get the hang of it though.

Excellent, Versatile Pack
February 06, 2012

I used this pack while snowboarding the back country of Silverton, CO. A great mountain, btw. The pack held up beautifully, not that I had any concerns prior to arriving at the mountain. The super soft goggle compartment is great to store your goggles while trekking up the ridge. The A-frame allows for a lot of weight without any structural sacrifice. For some reason I thought there'd be a bladder in the pack when I opened the box. There isn't, just FYI. So purchase one with the pack if you don't have one already. It is a great pack, overall. I used a Kode 22 before this one and the extra storage in the 30 will allow for enough space after packing your shovel and probe. I also plan to use this pack when I go mountain biking in the spring and camping in the summer. Very versatile pack.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Cons: Cost

Good Large Day Pack with Avi Pocket
January 07, 2010

At first when I put the backpack on without any load, it felt uncomfortable. There were pressure points on my back and it felt like the points of contact with my back were off. I wanted to send it back. I then decided to load it up with some clothing to see if it needed some weight to feel better since it has an internal frame. That made all the difference. The pack felt amazing. There is a pocket for everything and the pack feels very well made. The backloading pocket takes some getting used to, but I think overall the pack is going to work for backcountry rides and short overnighters where people can each take some of the tent.

Great pack for outdoor fun
January 18, 2011

The wet and dry compartments provide for easy access. I use this pack hiking/snowshoeing. There are pockets for everything which provides for easy accessibility/organization - especially when lunch break is only 10 minutes ( I need to find things quick and easy, w/c the KODE has ). It also has a whistle on the chest strap w/c is a nice extra. The waist band pockets are convenient for stashing camera and/or energy bar. The hydration compartment is very practical and fits the Osprey hydration bladder. I have the 3L. I am 5'2" , 107 lbs and the small fits me well; sometimes I forget it's on my back. The straps are long enough to allow room for adjustments, depending on how much load you have. There are straps to hold snowshoes which is one reason I bought this. I like the color and gives me more visibility out there.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

Great Snowboarding Pack
February 12, 2011

I recently purchased this pack for sidecountry/ backcountry, day long, snowboarding trips in Colorado. So far, it's been excellent. I'm 6'1, almost 200 lb., and bought the Large and it fits perfectly. I mainly haul extra food and water and layers for my wife and I; the pack has more than enough space for everything I need. I've been able to fit two extra pairs of gloves, two rolled up fleeces and two rolled up base layers in the back, plus extra food without feeling like the back is too bulky to ride on the lifts. And that does seem to be the key - riding comfortably on the lifts. I do have to sit an an angle because the size of the pack, but we were using quad-lifts with four people without any difficulty. The pack sits well and all the weight feels centered once the straps are adjusted properly. For the most part, when I'm riding, it is fairly stable. It does shift a little, but this is to be expected when using any pack for snowboarding. I suspect that a skier wouldn't have any trouble at all. I did use snowboard carrier once. For what it is, I think it does a great job, but I don't think I would use it often. With the pack full of gear, food, water and the board strapped on, it's pretty heavy. The design of the pack is excellent. I can't recall how many times I was glad to have the zippers for the main section in the back. It is extremely easy and quick to set the pack down on the fly and access any of your gear without having to dig down to find it. Definitely convenient. The bite valve compartment is also great to have. It didn't get too cold last time (only lower 20's), but I didn't encounter any freezing issues with the water bladder or hose which I used in it. The integrated goggle bag is quite large and I was able to fit goggles, sunglasses and a camera in it without having to worry about them getting crushed in a fall. My only complaint is the straps. There are straps on this pack to adjust everything; so it fits perfectly. But they also hang down and sometimes get in the way, though never a danger (ie snagging on a chair lift). Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with it. It is built really well and will definitely last me for several seasons to come.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, very comfortable, Cons: straps get in the way

Great Winter Sports Pack
March 27, 2010

I haven't met an Osprey Pack I didn't like, and this is no exception. It's great for all of my snowboard gear. The separate compartment is great for wet stuff at the end of the day. The only reason I gave it 4 starts was because I don't see it being as useful in the summer where a larger main compartment would be better.
