Big enough for an overnighter, small enough for day trips, the Osprey Stratos 40 Backpack is a do-it-all all-star of mid-size packs. The sophisticated AirCore suspension offers support that easily handles loads up to 30 lbs. and the hipbelt even does double duty, providing small mesh pockets for handy storage of snacks, sunscreen, etc. Varied load configurations are a cinch thanks to side pockets, compression straps, and a floating top pocket. Jam a water bottle into a side pocket, and then later in the day use the same side pocket and compression strap to carry your trekking poles. Meanwhile the floating top pocket extends to accommodate gear intensive endeavors. A zippered left front pocket allows for access to the main compartment, often a faster method of reaching buried gear than digging down from the main top access.
Great pack with all my favorite features in a light package
I travel the world by bike and till now used a custom made pack with a host of little features like zippered compartments in the waist strap to keep ready cash and mesh back to keep cool in hot climates. Being unable to find someone to rebuild my worn out custom pack I checked what was available ready made. To my delight the Osprey 40 had virtually everything I had in my custom job at lower weight and increased size. My only disappointments were minor. The broad top limits the rear vision from my bike mirror. It doesn't have a built in rain cover but this is easily remedied by carrying one in the large main compartment.
in love
This is a great winter bag---winged compression straps hold snowshoes tight and at 2600 cubes (lg) it holds all my winter gear--top is roomy enough for extra gloves, hats, and food and the mesh pockets are big enough for insulated nalgenes--ice axe hangs securely--hip belt is super comfy--good job by Osprey
GREAT PACK!
This is a great pack for a few nights on the trail. The pack is a great size and while I will probably never use the ice ax attachment loops, they serve well as additional strap points for other gear. Aircore is comfortable and provides a great little pocket to air out and dry damp clothing..

would recommend
I purchased this 2400ci pack to (1) replace a 2000ci pack and (2) to move it away from my back. I tend to carry enough on my day hikes to ensure comfort and safety should I have to spend a night out, and I never seemed to have enough room. I have not yet used the osprey on a day hike - but i have packed it as I normally would the 400ci makes a big difference. I day hike in the inland areas of southern california where the temps in summer can reach 90+ F. My previous pack, although about 1 pound less in weight, would be saturated - as would my back. My hiking buddy who has one of these packs swears by it and was always dry during our hikes while I was wet. I am looking forward to using this on my next dayhike!
Great pack for a great price
This pack will give you all the space you need. For day hikes and even an over night adventure. Very good all around design. It's a 5 star
Great pack at a great price
I use this pack for carrying my climbing gear and love it. The internal volume is great, the access to the top storage is key and easy to get into even while wearing the pack. The external straps are perfect for securing my rope and the stretch pockets on the outside are great for extra clothes or bottles. The suspension system is great and the straps are comfortable. I especially love the AirCore feature since it gives a simple protected space for your hydration and keeps your back cool and dry.
The pack is quite durable and well-built. Storage in the waist straps is excellent as is the ease of adjustment.
I recommend this pack for anyone looking to carry a moderate amount of weight moderate distances.
Solid pack for hard-core adventures
Osprey makes great packs, and the Stratos 40 lives up to the hype. This pack is built for scrambling and some peak adventures. Can double as a daypack, but it's mostly overbuilt for a simple "afternoon walk in the woods" pack. Great pack if you need heavy duty engineering.
Step 1 - Pack Sizing
All Osprey packs, save the transit bags, are available in multiple sizes to fit a range of torso lengths. To find your torso length, have a friend measure your back along the spine from the level of your iliac crest (the top of your hipbones) to your C7 (the knobby bone at the base of your neck).
Step 2 - Hipbelt Sizing
To determine your hipbelt size measure around your hips, not your waist. A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug; after all it will be carrying the bulk of the pack's weight. The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the pads when securely tightened.

ErgoPull
Nearly all Osprey hipbelts use an exclusive ErgoPull design. It creates mechanical advantage to provide extra leverage in cinching down the hipbelt. The ErgoPull design also draws tension along the top and bottom of the belt, not through the center, so it distributes pressure more evenly over the padding and relieves direct pressure on the hipbones.
Step 3 - Harness
Osprey Crescent & Luna, Aether & Ariel and Waypoint packs offer interchangeable shoulder harnesses. Harness sizing usually corresponds to pack size, but your best bet is to try one on. A properly fit harness should terminate 2 to 3" beneath the armpit. Webbing should not touch the body. By breaking the hook and loop connection and sliding the harness up and down the backpanel the torso length can be adjusted up to 3". (see illustration).

Step 4 - Overall Fit
Once you have the correct size pack, harness and hipbelt, and the torso length set properly, it's time to put some weight in the pack (20 to 30 pounds of well distributed weight will do) and dial in the fit. First, snug down the hipbelt and harness. Connect the sternum strap (A) - position it about 2 inches below your collarbones and snug it down lightly. Finally, tighten the load lifter straps to draw the load solidly against your back. The lift straps (B) should come off your shoulders at a 45 to 60 degree angle in Osprey's ReCurve and Ethereal Suspension packs. In other models these straps serve more as compression straps and ride flatter; they may even angle downwards.
In a good fit, there should be no pressure points and no gaps between your body and the pack. With Osprey's ReCurve packs, final tweaking may involve custom fitting the aluminum stays to your back.
