Very simple, rugged design. OR once again comes through with exactly what you have come to expect. Liner mitts are removable and still roomy enough to accept a base layer glove underneath. Cordura/GORE-TEX shell does what GORE-TEX does. 'Nuff said. It's the same combo as the Crocodile gaiters, so these mitts can definitely take some punishment. Wrist cinch on top, gauntlet cinch with opposing cords, all easy to use with the mitts on. Idiot cords are easy as well.

They are great, even keep my hands toasty on -30 F days. Love the idiot proofing so I can't lose them. Only bad thing is my grip does not curve exactly with glove, so dexterity is decreased.

I bought these mittens because my finger tips get frost bit easily. With these mittens I don't seem to have that problem. The shell seems tough and likely will stand up to lots of abuse. They are a little pricey but in this case I definitely got what I paid for. Overall very impressed.

I got them 2 weeks ago and it's been cold and WET with freezing rain. My hands stayed dry and warm when I plowed the driveway on my tractor. I am outside for 2 hrs. at a crack and my hands have never stayed this warm. I can't wait to go ice fishing!
lee in New Hampshire and British Columbia - 2007-01-09well designed, very warm, multipurpose
i've been using the mitten for skiing—resort and back country—as well as a bit of winter hiking. sometimes the liner is sufficient warmth on hikes when i won't have my hands in the snow. Great breathability, very durable. i find that the fleece interior of the mitten has pilled a bit, which gives it an odd texture but there's been no deterioration of the warmth. Only negative feature is the one-handed pull on the wrist guantlet. I find that the bead-mechanism works fine when tried off my hand, but does not retain any synch when my hand/arm are in the mitten. it's a small irritation but hasn't resulted in any problem.

I bought these mitts for my wife, who has chronically cold fingers when we ski (Big Sky and Bridger Bowl, Montana). We, quite literally, have a box of mitts (forget gloves) that have failed the test. The Cornice Mitts, however, have actually caused her hands to sweat. These are the best, warmest mitts she's worn to-date. What she appreciates the most is that the inner mitt is nearly as long as the gauntlet, which means that there are no gaps around the wrist for cold to creep in.
Logan B - 2006-12-04The Perfect All-Purpose Mitt
Unlike alot of the competition Outdoor Research combined the perfect combination of features in their mitt. The Mountain Hardwear Elevation Mitt uses elastic in the wrist which doesnt prevent the mitt from moving around when working with your hands. The Marmot Crestline Mitt is too cumbersome and decreases dexterity when working with handtools. And the North Face Mountain Guide Mitt's finger compartment is awkwardly long and the gauntlet too short.
The Cornice Mitt uses the super durable 3-layer Gore-Tex fully seam sealed, and after 2 season, i've had no moisture problems. The Gauntlets are nice and long to fit over any jacket, even insulated down-filled. The wrist cinch strap keeps the glove in place for working with handtools. The Shell is so simple is great for use over different glove-style liners suitable for the weather; also, it comes off quick to expose your liner for dexterious task like working with radios, straps, bindings, packs, and so on.
This is a great glove, and after two hard seasons, the 330-denier Gore-Tex shows almost no wear except for some stains on the gaultlets.

This Spring I used these mittens while descending by bicycle from mountain passes at 30 mph+ when it was raining and snowing.
These mittens obviously didn't make me smarter, but they pretty much kept my hands from being too cold. After I learned to put on my jacket after the mittens, my hands stayed dry too.
For actual warmth under these conditions and to have more dexterity when off the bike, I am buying a glove liner to supplement these mittens.
Dexterity is adequate to operate STI road shifters, but really not enough to do any finer tasks like unzipping.

I used these mitts on Mt. Rainier. They were very warm. I like the DuoCinch cuffs. They performed very well on the ropes. I would highly recommend them for NW mountaineering. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because it does not have any softer material in the outside shell when you do not want to use the liner.
Kevin B. - 2008-01-22Good Mitt for the Money
I have been alpine skiing for 37yrs in gloves in air temps as low as -35F and cold hands have always been a problem that I just lived with. These are my first pair of mitts and I put them to the test in Montana. Temps were -5 - +20F. My hands were warmer than they have ever been in these temps which I had hoped for.
At first I didn't like the dexterity loss (which I feared) but on my second day I used a pair of thin liner gloves and it worked great. I could pop my hands out and have better dexterity and warmth than with regular gloves and I could use my liners for quick nose wipes. I did not find the loss of dexterity a problem while skiing.
Pluses: good value, durable, great palm grip, idiot chords, quick cinch, removable liners.
Minuses: no comfy nose wipe.
They come on the big side so I would recommend ordering the next size down for perfect fit or normal size if you want to put in a liner.
Raymond Riggs - 2007-02-16Well-made and warm
Just got them recently and have had ample opportunity to use them (been a lot of snow and cold here).Comfortable, warm, obviously colorful [red]. Of course, one loses a lot of dexterity but such is the nature of mittens.
The acid test will be a session in sub-zero weather, but my hunch is they'll do just fine. The 4-star rating is tentative until I can try the sub-zero test. Given that they pass that the rating goes to 5.
BenJammin - 2006-01-07Seem good
Haven't used them a whole lot yet. They are put together awesome. The inner mitt is very warm and seems like it would do well in cold weather. I am climbing Kilimanjaro in two weeks and will be using them then. I will check back in after the trip and leave another review with more content.

Basically disappointed. Thought for the price that I would get mittens that would keep my fingers from turning white but they were no different than much less expensive products.
