The Deluxe Bivy is the dream of those who want to shave ounces from their load but really love the idea of having the extra space and comfort provided by an overhead pole. Compared to the Advanced Bivy, it utilizes one pole rather than two, is faster to set up, but does sacrifice a few of the ventilation options. The forward roof section can be pulled back so the no-see-um netting is completely uncovered and the storm flap can be snapped around the edges to hold the forward roof section in place even though the zipper is wide open for maximum ventilation. The Deluxe utilizes GORE-TEX® top, sides, and foot section, as well as the impervious Hydroseal-200® coated floor. There are also sleeping pad straps to keep your bivy from twisting in the night.
Excellent Bivy
After much research on bivy sacks, I purchased the OR Deluxe Bivy. I use it mainly for backcountry and winter mountaineering. With that in mind I needed something waterproof and lightweight.
Placing the opening at the head helps incease waterproofness and contrary to some reviews, the opening is plenty big enough for easy entry/exit and to remain in the bag while cooking. With a full pad and a 20 degree bag, it is plenty warm enough for most winter conditions. With a zero degree bag, it is an oven.
The Deluxe vents well, however, as with any bag you must vent it a little in very humid conditions to stop light condensation from forming inside. I have not experienced a problem with condensation winter camping.
It is also very roomy and doesn't feel claustrophobic, especially with the pole installed. One very minor thing I do find annoying are the sleeping pad straps inside. They tend to get in the way, so I cut them out. If it had a tie-in loop, like the Bibler Big Wall Bivy, this would be a terriffic climbing bivy.
Overall, I would purchase this product again. Or's design, quality and craftmanship are superb.
Great quality at the right price
I researched a number of bivy sacks and selected the Deluxe Bivy as a result. Your customer service staff was very knowledgable and helpful. Pricing was better than at the sporting goods store I visted that carried the product and with free shipping it was a great deal.
