Jacket pancho
May 09, 2012
The hem to bicepe zip is an amazing idea. This allows for great ventilation while carrying a day pack or overnight pack. It may be that i haven't worn a new rain jacket in a while, but this thing repells water. It reppells the intense thunderstorms of the south east without getting you way overheated in the southeast hot and mugginess. The weight is noticably light.
Pros: Great designAs good as it gets!

This is an awesome jacket. The zippers from the armpit down allow the jacket to ventilate like no other. Weight is minimal and it is very easy to fold up in carry-on luggage. There are plenty of zippers and pockets for whatever you carry. I will take this with me when traveling in Costa Rica and can't imagine a more functional or comfortable design. Stay tuned.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, light weightGreat Rain Jacket

I wear it when needed (raining). I really like the full pit zips for ventilation and the adjustable hood. It is very light weight and well made. You can't go wrong with OR. Altrec is a great place to buy.

I finally found the rain jacket I have been looking for... - casual fit - full pit-zips with taped zippers - gortex pac-lite - one inside pocket - two outside pockets with taped zippers - hood - similar fit to the Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Living in Chicago, I use this jacket for cycling, walking, adventuring out in the city. It packs pretty small and it fairly breathable.
Pros: Great design, Build qualityReliable jacket

I bought this rain jacket recently for my job as a landscaper. I needed a rain jacket that could withstand bad weather, mud, thorns, and general abuse. It rained most of last week, and so far there's no evidence of any ripping or loss of waterproofness. Gore-Tex feels light weight yet durable. Also, the pockets are big enough to hold my work gloves and clippers. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase.
Pros: Build quality, Performance, Great valuegreat jacket, nifty features galore

I'm 6 feet, 160 lbs, 42 inch chest -- medium fits me well, with room for a base layer (e.g. wool shirt) and light insulation (e.g. fleece). a prior review mentioned the sleeves were too long, but I like the length -- they allow me to reach up freely while keeping my wrists covered. I love pockets -- the Foray has pack-friendly hand pockets, a chest pocket, and an inside pocket. The full length ventilation system is functional and unique, though I doubt I'd ever zip down to "full poncho" mode. also love the two-way main zipper which I use frequently. I've used this jacket backpacking in heavy rain in Thailand, Japan, and Kauai -- it's lightweight, packable, and it keeps me dry. it's durable enough, though not as bombproof as heavier-gauge goretex. one minor point I don't like is the reflective material of the logo. I'd prefer more muted details for tactical spec ops and for not throwing back the flash in photos. great jacket!

excellent product. Waterproof and it breathes, thank you Goretex. A great value for the money. I'm 5'8", 150 lbs. and the medium is a perfect fit. It's also very lightweight, easy on my backpack.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueGreat shell

Good waterproof shell. At 6'3, 195lbs an XL fit quite loose but is good for plenty of layering underneath. Kind of noisy, but worth the light weight. I'd buy it again by maybe a L.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great valueGreat Rain Gear
April 13, 2011
Surviving in torrential downpours and went snow. This jacket is the bomb. Kept me dry and able to vent to cool off if to warm. Packs so small , about the size of a nalgene container. Stash it in your pack for those unexpected events !
Impeccable Quality, Functional Design
November 10, 2010
I'm an ecologist/environmental scientist, and I spend an exorbitant amount of time working in the field in what are often horrendous environmental conditions. I am very demanding of my apparel, and I tend to opt for quality over economy. My reasons are evident in the following tale: Over the summer, I bought some rain gear (against my better judgement) that was bulky, heavy, not breathable, ill-fitting, but easy on my pocketbook. Unsurprisingly, I found very quickly that it was not at all worth the cheap vinyl that it was made of. I used it only a couple of times over the few months I'd had it before tearing both jacket and pants on rogue tree limbs during a field assignment. Rain gear with holes is hardly better than no rain gear at all, and I was forced to spend more money on the quality rain gear I should have purchased in the first place. I opted with the Outdoor Research brand because I've yet to be let down by their products, and the Foray jacket had exactly the qualities I was looking for: it's immensely durable yet remarkably lightweight; it breathes extremely well with more than ample ventilation; it features high quality taped seams and is backed by a lifetime warranty. I've worked with it in the field in cold (nearly freezing) and wet (constant, steady rain) conditions which would have been absolutely miserable without my Foray range. What I've found is that Outdoor Research has again delivered a product that performs exactly the way it is supposed to. By itself, the jacket isn't warm, but it's not really supposed to be. With a base layer, and/or a fleece as a second layer, one can be quite comfortable in a wide range of temperatures. The fit could be slightly better for me personally (I have a long torso, and the jacket would fit better if it were just a touch longer in length). In truth, I couldn't ask for more from this outstanding product.

Have used it for a while now. Seam and zips are well made and the water resistance have been holding up well. it folds nicely when not in used and can be compressed. It fits true to size. the side zipper are interesting although i must say i have not find it that useful for me.

I love this jacket and wear it everyday in windy wet 35-55* conditions with a tee shirt underneath. The only thing I noticed is that at warmer temperatures it does not breathe well, even with the vents open it has a rubbery feel on the inside that I have not seen with most goretex stuff. I assume this is also what makes it so waterproof and wind resistant. I have also noticed that when I layer underneath it I get real warm, which is probably a good thing. I wear an XL and the jacket stuffs up small for backpacking. I wouldn't recommend this for exercising because of the breathability. I walk along the Pacific everyday in Northern California and this jacket has stood up to some heavy conditions. I would buy it again if I had the chance.

Excellent shell
January 28, 2010
I replaced a time-worn Marmot Precip with the OR Foray and am very pleased. While I haven't had the chance to see the water proofing in action (I'm sure it will compare favorably with the Marmot - it is Goretex after all)- the venting on this thing is just great. I had it on this chilly morning breaking camp as a windbreaker - and left it on for the duration of the hike out. Never had that clammy feeling the Precip has, and once I started to sweat a bit the full length pitzip kept me from overheating. Also, the size is great - big enough to fit over an insulating layer like a Thermawrap, but not so flappy that it seems oversize. Overall I am quite happy with this piece.

Great Jacket, Great Puchase!
January 27, 2010
I purchased this jacket a while ago. I LOVE IT! Its lightweight, packable, & dependable in all weather (i.e. rain, snow, wind). Sometimes I'll wear it under a heavy coat for more insulation against the elements. *Only fault... I bought the 2X, but they don't make a 2X Pant (shucks).

Love this Jacket
December 11, 2009
best venting jacket i have ever owned. very waterproof. great for my daily running and anything other wet outdoor activity
I love the hood!
March 10, 2013
All the OR jackets I've used have great hoods! This matters bigtime when you're slogging through the rain in the backcountry! The Foray's hood is no exception; it keeps the rain off your face without being bulky (and it can still extend over my climbing helmet#. I recommend this great, affordable lightweight shell. Though I've used my Foray skiing, it doesn't give the warmth and wind protection that you'd expect from a 3-ply Gortex ski specific shell. Lastly, if using for climbing, beware of sharp rock while wearing this jacket - it can rip more easily than a softshell or the like. (OR's Ferrosi hoody is more durable on the rock.) But if you're rapping in the rain or getting buffeted by the wind, the Foray will ease the discomfort!

Great Rain Protection, Baggy Fit
August 29, 2012
I've used this rain jacket on several backpack trips and it really provides outstanding protection from the rain. It also breathes very well, however the sleeves on this jacket are huge. They are way to long and wide and so they tend to bunch up at my wrists. I think I'm going to return this jacket for a better fitting Marmot or Patagonia.
Pros: Build quality, Performance, Cons: baggy fitGreat Ultra-Light Jacket
December 20, 2010
Great ultra-light shell that does everything for $100 less than comparable models from its competitors. Only two observations: I would agree with other users that the fabric is a bit "noisy". There should be a snapping or velcro flap over where the "poncho" length pit zips terminate at the waistline. When you cinch down the waist tight, there is a tendency for the zippers to get pulled slightly apart at this point. A flap would help to keep them tightly closed.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueSeems like a great jacket but too large
June 12, 2010
Once arrived I noticed how light weight the jacket was while also feeling quite durable. It was a little too loud and crinkly for me. And unfortunately the Large fit like an extra-large so I had to return it. Large jackets are always a 'little' too big for me which is what I like. But this was massive on me. I eventually got an OR Mentor jacket in medium which fit quite well.

Lightweight and waterproof.
January 17, 2012
This is my first Outdoor research product. I have always heard good things about them so I figured what the heck. For the price of this sghell it has alot of features found only in higher priced shells. I was very eager to test how waterproof this shell was. Living in Illinois in January means an occasional wet snow or two. I was at a jobsite surveying when it started to snow. I had the Foray shell in my car so I gave it it's first bath. I sat outside for three hours in a heavy wet snow. This jacket performed flawlessly. The paclite Goretex shed water like no other. It was pretty cold out but with a heavy weight fleece underneath, I stayed plenty warm. I cannot comment on the breathibility as of yet but, the full length zippers on the sides of this jacket have me pretty convinced that it will do just fine. Overall, this shell seems like a great buy. The quality of the product prompted me to buy on of their sombrero's as well! I can't wait to try these bad boys out in the Boundary waters this summer!!
