I sleep in this...
February 21, 2012

My girlfriend can't get me out of this jacket. It is simple, but perfect. Fits a little longer than most comparable jackets, and has a slightly shorter collar than others as well, which is great for wearing a hoody under around town, or even better for a compact but warm layer under a tech shell on the mountains. Yes, I sleep in this.

Great jacket
January 01, 2013

The cut and fit of this jacket is perfect. I tried on many light down jackets and this jacket fit by far the best. The waist was not too large and I can seal the waist nice and snug with just a slight waist cord adjustment. It has all the right features (Napoleon pocket, stuff able into pocket, waist adjustment, and fleece lined pockets and collar) while still keeping the jacket simple and light. It is not the warmest jacket in its class, but a great value compared to most. Great piece of gear, and very happy with my purchase.

Every Day Down
January 17, 2013

A true down sweater that wears great all by itself. My main use of this jacket is for an outer layer, my basis for this review. The jacket is a home run IMO, it is super light and very warm with minimal under layers. It's not bulky at all so you're not looking like the Michelin Man when out and about. OR did a fine job with this jacket, the warmth to weight ratio is super. It does a good job in blocking modest winds and is somewhat water repellent, but not water proof. It did well in beading showers, but extended stays in the rain showed signs of soak through on the outer shell. The weather here has been in the mid to upper 30's, and I can say that this jacket with a t-shirt and a thin fleece kept me toasty. It's not a high gram weight down fill so it's not for arctic like adventures, but for my uses it performs superbly! I'm 6'1" 175lbs and the medium fit perfect with enough room to fit a t-shirt and a Patagonia R1 under without issue. I'll also say that I have not experienced some of the issues regarding the down leaking out. Maybe they have changed the material in the later models, but I have not found any down leakage. I liked this product so much that I also purchased the hooded version. The outer shell does seem thin, but it is rated at 20D ripstop (whatever that means) and seems to be what other products have as well. I will say that it has been used with a backpack and has rubbed up against various objects without any signs of tearing or snagging. I am very happy with this product and with OR in general.

Surprisingly Warm
January 05, 2013

Searched long and hard for an ultralight down jacket, the OR Transcendent sweater has proven to be a pleasant surprise. Trim fit goes easily under a storm shell, waist cinch cord is an excellent feature, keeps out drafts. Unbelievably warm for a jacket that packs up so small. Very happy with this purchase.

Everything expected and more!
January 16, 2013

I'm a big fan of nearly everything OR makes and this is perhaps my favorite item yet! This jacket serves as a fantastic layer with its ability to compress to almost nothing, however it stands alone as one of my favorite winter outer layers! It is very warm when outside in the elements to around 30 degrees, but also breathes so well that I find myself leaving it on most of the day while indoors. It fits true to size. I'm 6'1'' at 190, the Medium is perfect and still fits great under my Medium GoreTex shell. I have OR's Maestro jacket, and love the Transcendent sweater now for the days that the Maestro is just too warm.

Very nice and warm down jacket. Performed well in damp and cold conditions in the Smokies this winter. Ideal for backpacking in cold weather because it is so packable and lightweight, but still very warm.

great coat for any cold weather
December 29, 2012

This is a deceptively warm coat. It is not a thick, puffy down coat but is just a little thicker than heavy fleece. However, I have found it to be more than warm enough down to 20 degrees without additional insulation. The cut is a slightly trim for layering, but not tight. At 5'11" and around 200lbs, the large fits great with room around the shoulders and chest, but not so baggy. Putting a hard shell over this is a snap. There are two pockets for hands, with two internal pockets big enough for a 32 oz nalgene or similar water bottle. I don't really use the zipper chest pocket except to carry the jacket, as it stuffs down to the size of a paperback book. Still, this is not a flimsy shell; it feels solid and snow and light rain bead up in the surface. All in all this is a great coat that should last through many winters

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great value, warm
