Great product, just a bit big
January 15, 2012
The Ninjaclava was built great, but was slightly too big for my 5'4" fiancee. For sizing, she wears a small Giro helmet, but the S/M Ninjaclava was too loose around her nose to reliably provide 100% coverage as it kept falling down. Overall, the construction is pretty warm: thicker than a pure first layer but still thinner and more breathable than a neoprene mask.
Pros: Build qualityGreat item

We would have frozen our bums off if we didn't have this item. I purchased 4 of these for me, my wife and 2 boys and it snowed almost 5 inches the weeked we were at mammoth. With the wind and snow coming down, it would have been nearly impossible to snowboard without this item.

good head protection

This is good head protection from the cold weather. A very versatile head gear with different configurations. Not too bulky and it fits great.
really great!

When I opened up that box I was surprised how thin the material was. When I put it on I saw that the material was perfect, easy to breathe through and yet rather warm, even against strong winds. I love that the top pulls back to be just a face mask/neck gator, so I don't completely scare my neighbors.

Great light balaclava
February 24, 2008
This balaclava is light and warm and suprisingly great in high winds. It converts to a beanie neck gator face mask and many other options. Great item you won't be sorry.
Cool but shoddy

comfortable, thin and warm, ninjaclava offers a slick looking clava, but, like the other reviewers, my bottom stitching also came off late in the season. Customer service at OR left a lot to be desired as well.
Right Stuff
February 11, 2010
I like those S/M fitting OR just made it right since most of these half/half size are comfortable never too baggy or too tight. This ninjaclava provides total protection to all your face but still leave enough room for your eyesight, the interior is really smooth. For such a good quality and protection against those freezing days the price is affordable this is a must have for anyone.
A great product, with few flaws

Overall, this is a great mask that easily provides the full face coverage that is needed in Airsoft combat. Although after two days of use, the bottom hem of the mask fell off. Also be sure to wash that puppy before use, lest you break out like I did.
Put it on and leave it on

Four days in the Mt Washington wind and no complaints at all. It is just as comfortable over the mouth or pulled down under the chin. I have OR mitts and gaiters and they are 3 for 3 in my book.
Slides up to obscure vision

I really like OR products for their thoughtful design, good materials, and good construction. I got this in S/M for my wife. She has not tried it camping yet, but when she tried it on at home, she found that she would not be able to wear it covering her nose (when awake) because the bottom of the opening slides up and presses against the bottom of her eyes. Using in this configuration for sleep would be OK.

Perfect for the whole family!

I purchased 2 of the S/M for my children (ages 5 and 6) and the L/XL for myself (female, 38, 140#). We ski in the White Mountains of NH all winter so quality and warm gear are very important. We wore these every ski day last season and loved them! Perfect fit under the helmet, comfortable, and warm. Can't think of anything negative to say about these!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of useAnother superb product from OR

Even with high expectations of OR's product, they continue to impress. This balaclava is warm (almost too warm to use while running in temps as low as 15F), is great with the wind (even though it is not made of windstopper material), is comfortable, and [con-vert]s into many different coverage options. Keep it up OR.
Great product, will look to Outdoor Research for other needs

The quality of the product and the multiple ways this item can be used is amazing. Several ways to use depending of how cold you are.
Lightweight is the way to go
September 25, 2009
Skiing in Washington State, we sometimes get big and heavy flakes. I used to suck them into the back of my throat during big storms...which took away from the fun. Buttoning up behind the Ninjaclava, I can still breathe but the flakes are filtered out. On warmer days, the opening is big enough to expose my whole face with no conflict with my helmet straps. I have another thinker balaclava, but now I never use it.
Awesome, just awesome.

The thing can turn into like 5 different masks and it's light weight, yet warm. I love it. If it gets too anoying you can turn it into a beanie, or just pull the mouth part down. Your face does get a little wet from your breathe that bounces back.
Light is right

The Ninjaclava is the way to go, you can use the facemask when it's really cold or simply pull it down if you want more air. Great for COLD weather running or those long chairlift rides. And if you need to rob a bank...

Should be standard equipment

I was able to use this in freezing rain at 6000' in north carolina with the wind howling at 50 plus and It was a Godsend
Awesome face/neck protection
October 12, 2011
For a while I had been using the neck warmer or silk head warmer. I decided to try this under my helmet and now I don't go out when it's cold or snowing without it! With googles on and a helmet I don't even know it's snowing anymore. And that useful hurt! Trying to keep my jacket above my chin just didn't work. This thing is the best. Warm and comfortable. NO more wind burn!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of usebalaclava with style

I bought this balaclava for a Kilimanjaro climb - wore it on ascent from Arrow Glacier to Crater Camp to summit and early descent. The western breach climb requires helmets, and this balaclava was warm yet thin enough to fit under the halmet. I rated "good" for comfort because it is not so comfortable to have this over the mouth and nose (tends to ride up) - this may be a problem with all balaclavas... I rated "good" for durability only because I have not owned this for very long.
great

Love the tight fit under my helmet and it offers great protection from the elements while riding the chair lift.
Bad Stitching!
August 30, 2007
The Clava is warm and does what it says however beware the stitching around the base. I bought 2 of these, one for me and one for a friend, both came away when we first tried them on meaning I had to go get it fixed. As I live in England and had to get this delivered to someone in the US (as shipping costs to England are huge) and then get them to bring it to me when they visited it would have cost me more in time and effort to send it back to Altrec than just to go pay someone to fix it - Not what I'd expect from OR gear.
good

Great fitting and lightweight. Its also versitile.
Love it

My husband works outdoors high up in high in freezing seaside News England weather. Bought this for him for xmas. Says it saved his life. Best gift ever. No sweat, wind resistant, breathable, flexible. He can uncover his face if needed. He lost his and asked for another. No other clava will do.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueexcellent snug fitting frosbite protection

12 degrees and 15-25mph today on the golf course where I X-C ski. Not doable without face and eye protection. So much heat is generated climbing uphill it's a balancing act to get the clothing right--breathable, but also wind protection. I like hooded jackets so I can pop it up for the upwind leg, but you need something for the face. This piece works well, but I prefer the OR Wind Pro balaclava which is much looser, as it can be worked around to cover the side where the wind comes from. This should work well under a bike helmet for the under 45 degree rides. I've never had a problem with OR gear.
