bombproof hat
January 26, 2011
I used to own a nearly identical hat from MH, windstopper and all, that grew legs and is lost. When looking for a replacement this was the only one I could find that had windstopper, earflaps, a drawstring, and just plain fleece. OR certainly did not spare form over function, this is not for the vain. However when I had it on around 10F and active I was almost hot. I have a pretty big head, large or XL for ball caps and so on. The large is a tad loose but doesn't compromise warmth. According to their measurements the M would have been a little too snug. An XL with the sizing spaced closer together would remedy this, but that is the only fault I have with this piece of gear. And while I don't find it to be a fault your hearing is muffled a decent amount. So if you already have sub-par hearing you might want to try it out before dancing with traffic on your bike.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Great value, Cons: sizing rangeAlready own the Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat? Tell us your thoughts.
I love this hat!
December 10, 2012
I love my hat! I got the purple and black, and it looks very nice. It keeps my head warm without being sweaty or itchy, and it stays in place very well. This is important because sometimes winter hats shift which pulls my hair to different places and ends up leaving me very uncomfortable. Not a problem here. I have a 22.5 inch head and ordered the large. I wouldn't mind if there was a smidgen more room, but it fits just like it should. If I fold the earflaps up to take the hat off and put it on, then I can keep from messing up my hair at work, which is nice. I love the chin strap because it helps keep it in place plus it holds the earflaps down, although they are slightly cupped too. When I was out in the very chilly strong wind, the only part of my head that was cold was my cheeks and nose. My ears couldn't feel a thing. I usually make my own hats, and bought this one because I didn't have enough time to make an earflap hat, but I am glad because this is my favorite very-cold weather hat now, plus it looks cute.
Pros: Great design, Performance, Great value, warm, stylish, blocks windWrite a review for the Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat here.
Very nice!

This hat is just what I was looking for. The windstopper is great! THis isn't a very thick hat, but if your active it is perfect.
Warmth and light packing
February 17, 2009
This hat is the perfect answer to warmth and packing light. Hiking in winter is a cinch--the cinch strap is so easy to use with both gloves and mittens.

As Advertised
February 09, 2009
Certainly stops the wind. I also found it comfortable to sleep in during a 6 day Rainier trip. Recent use in NH on sub-zero day ice climbing was great under a helmet, and the ability to hang it around your neck when you warm up was an added plus.
Keep your Ears Covered
January 15, 2011
Many times, with hats, your ears get uncovered when you tilt your head back. Not so with the Peruvian. The chin strap keeps your ears covered. The fleece material is soft and thick enough for most winters.

Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat
January 30, 2013
Finially, a good fitting hat that I can wear without having it ride up on my head and uncover my ears. Also when secured, an overhanging limb cannot pull it off your head. This hat is warm for its weight and really blocks wind.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueDefinitely blocks the wind
January 29, 2009
Really cuts the wind. Very lightweight and folds up real flat due to the 2-dimensional design -- however that and the truncated top make it a bit goofy. The chin-chord is pretty sweet and makes it super easy to fold the flaps up or let the hat hang around your neck. The only problem I had with the hat is that the stitching connecting the two different colored pieces of fabric irritated my upper forehead to no end. Probably just a quirk to my head shape.

Perfect for Greenland
November 24, 2007
The shape and the fabric makes this hat perfect for cold conditions. The chin cord makes sure your ears are warm even on really cold days. I have used this model for five years in Greenland - dog sledding. And I haven´t found a hat better than this.
Best winter hat
December 28, 2006
Best winter hat I've ever owned! Light weight, blocks wind, comfy. Lost the first one and bought a second immediately as replacement.
Warm, windproof, lightweight & cute
January 23, 2010
I live in MD, and wear this in temps down into the 30's. I prefer my fur-lined Mad Bomber hats when it's colder and windier. This hat is esp. cute in contrasting colors. I have a VERY small head. I wear size Small and it's a bit large - but NOT too big...This hat is a winter staple for me.
small light and warm
December 06, 2010
For the most part I like this hat, its small, light, dries quickly, warm and blocks the wind. As with any winter hat there is a certain amount of goofiness in appearance, but this is fairly minimal with this hat as it does not tend to ride up and create the bubble head look. My main disappointment is with the chin strap. I hate having things dangling in front of my neck and the line and cord lock attached to the ear flaps does just that. Putting the cord lock behind my head pulled on the flaps just enough to give me winglets over my ears. Once I come to terms with that cord lock or cut it off, Im sure Ill like the hat that much more. The Large fit my fat (7 3/4) head.

Can't go wrong with OR

Nice hat, fits well. Can be worn for long periods and protects from the wind well. Go for it..
Peruvian hat review
November 12, 2007
It's the warmest hat I've ever owned, I use it while riding my motorcycle at temps down to 20F, under a half helmet!!! It's great and looks cool too!!!
Superb fit and function
January 21, 2008
Great cold-weather design. The Large was perfectly sized for my noggin. Compared to earlier versions of this hat from OR, the material today is softer, but just as wind resistant. Chin strap keeps wind away from ears and ensures warm cheeks.

Great Night Cap
December 02, 2009
I sleep out a lot, often in May and into October, in the Adirondacks in NY, barely 100 miles from Canada. Gets pretty nippy, and though sleeping bag has a hood of sorts, keeping that on one's head is a challenge. This tie down, whole head and ear covering Peruvian hat makes an ideal nightcap. It is thin, soft, not too warm but keeps the chill off, and stays on your head no matter the tossing and turning.
Stops the wind as advertised......
November 13, 2009
The hat will stop the wind, however I live in Grand Forks, ND and the winters are very cold. Because it doesn't have any fleece for a liner I will need to wear another hat under it. My other OR hat is the alpine hat...warmer but let's the wind in......

Wind-proof & warm (mostly)
October 14, 2009
This hat is wind-proof and warm. It protects my ears from the cold wind. The fleece isn't as thick as the WindStopper fleece on the Outdoor Research Gorilla Balaclava, also sold by Altrec. This one is great for the fall or active winter; I wouldn't want to sit outside for long in a Minnesota winter with this one, though. Overall, I'd recommend it.
Fantastic Design & Materials
August 26, 2007
Comfortable, warm, functional - the flaps cover your ears and almost entire chin, giving great wind protection - also sheds water. Still light and thin enough to be worn under a brimmed hat, such as a Snoqualmie Sombrero. Add a neck gaiter and you're ready for Vinson Massif
Great Hat
March 11, 2008
I have never had my head and ears so warm when the windchill was -37. It weighs practically nothing and keeps my head and ears toasty warm. FINALLY I can keep my head warm.
So light, so warm
November 07, 2010
It's getting colder these days and Michigan is windy. I wear this hat when I go jogging early in the morning. It's so light and I feel so warm. No more headache. I would like to see how it works in January. The size s is a little tight for me (I don't have a big head), but the price is a bargain.

Light and very warm
January 16, 2010
Great for cold weather skiing. The hat fits true to size and is very thin but very warm. Have used it in the -20s with no problems.
Great protection in harsh Wisconsin Winter
March 06, 2010
When temperature dips to teens and below in Wisconsin, I immediately make this hat my arsenal. It is light enough to carry around and it protects and keeps my head warm from the frigid temperature and icy wind. I also wear it during XC-SKI. I definitely use it to hike the Sierras this Summer '10.
great in the wind!
January 26, 2009
very comfy hat and it really does stop the wind. Lightweight, easy to hang around your neck if you want to take it off for awhile and not lose it. It is ok indoors too but it is great out in the wind! Very pleased with this and the other Outdoor research cap I recently bought.
Stops Wind-Very warm
March 05, 2009
This hat covered my ears and kept my head warm on a very cold, windy day. Well worth the money.
Great warmth without bulk
January 01, 2012
Bought two of these for my best buddy and he loves em' despite not being a hat fan as he doesn't like regular hats that slip or fall off. These fit the bill for him and he really likes them. They are warm, windproof, cover the ears well and stay on. They are not bulky and are very easy care - toss em' in the wash, dry on low and they are ready to go. Very simple design and well made.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueUseful hat
November 15, 2008
I am a roofer/snow removal person in Fargo, ND. We work in weather down to -20F, most Jan mornings are below zero and wind chills hit -60F at times. The hat keeps my head warm in those conditions. If I get too warm, I let the hat hang around my neck till I cool off. The hat never gets lost if it is around my neck. It never is forgotten at restaurants. It is thin enough so I can put another hat over it if conditions get extreme. It covers my ears very well.
Best cold weather hat ever
March 30, 2013
This had is gorgeously warm. I wear it with the chin strap cinched up asleep in my tent at night, keeping my head warm, without loosing is in the middle of the night. The ear covers make a remarkable difference in terms or warmth. The windstopping fabric is terrific. Winner all around. I would however like some more colourful styles without any black ;-)
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueVery warm lightweight hat
November 29, 2012
I purchased this hat for work to wear under a hardhat. It fully covers my ears and is lightweight enough to fit under my hardhat. I would recommend this hat for it's warmth without bulk.

December 28, 2010
I've been looking for head covering for winter runs that will keep my head and ears warm, but not be constricting or otherwise interfere with my headphones. This fit the bill perfectly. Now my wife wants one as well.
Pros: Great design, Great valueWorks Great. Just what I was looking for

This hat does the job.
December 28, 2011
I go out at dawn daily. Temps in the high 20s to low 30s. Finding something to warm my ears has not been easy. I wear this hat under my beanie. The chin cord secures it in place nicely. This hat does the job. It is light in weight, and is easy to carry after the temp heats up. Love the Windstopper feature. I plan to buy additional hats for mountainering family members. Con: Runs a tad large.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, Cons: runs a little large in size.Already own the Outdoor Research Peruvian Hat? Tell us your thoughts.
Excellent Noggin Coverage
February 19, 2008
Good coverage over and below ears; ample protection from sustained winds. Material isn't so thick as to cause sweating. Pretty much a must have item for those who enjoy frosty & windy conditions.
Good build quality and head coverage, average style
March 22, 2010
I've been very happy with this hat from a functional standpoint. Very warm and windproof while providing excellent coverage of my large-ish head including ears. I have other hats I like more for most conditions, just because of styling, but when it gets extra cold and windy, this is what I reach for.
Great ski hat
August 02, 2010
I used to ski wearing ball caps and my ears would freeze and at speed, the wind would blow my hat off. The Peruvian hat keeps head and ears nice and warm, I recommend it.

Best Peruvian style hat available.
January 11, 2010
I searched the net for a week before stumbling on this hat and this site. It did fit a bit snug when I first received it, but has since streched out a bit. It protects my ears and head much better than standard winder hat and much better than a bomber hat. Being able to tighten the string helps keep the hat tight against your head so wind can't blow in.
Works well in 40degF conditions
February 12, 2010
My head measured abt 22.75", bought Retro Red/M, quite a snug fit, maybe L would be better but M works. Colour is as pictured. Very good coverage for the ears, windproof. Material is light and thin thus easy to keep in jacket/pants pocket. Kept me warm in 40degF but might need something thicker for conditions below 32degF.
Good size
January 23, 2010
Very roomy for my big head! Wish the cord was longer, though. Great mid-weight winter hat...

Finally.....
January 07, 2012
I have a pea sized head and have been looking for a good fitting true WindStopper beanie for a while. OR hit a home run here, the size small fits great, is light warm and most importantly, keeps the wind out. So many fail to realize that stopping the wind is the first key to warmth, as a skinny dude that lives in a cold climate, I know all too well. Excellent product, may get another for backup.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueGreat hat

Delivered quickly, fits great--can't wait to try it out on the slopes.
