It's worth it
December 01, 2012
I got a good deal on this beanie a while ago and really love its warmth and comfort. It's super soft and just feels good on your head, and definitely keeps you warm up there. The Pertex Endurance material offers great breathability, so you don't get condensation at all, and it's fairly water resistant (got caught in a few drizzles). As for the durability, I haven't had any feathers fly out of my head yet, nor any tears, so I'd say it's holding up pretty good. It's not the best looking hat, but it packs down so small and light (practically weightless in the stuff sack) I don't even care about the looks, I just toss it in my pack or glove box any time I'm going out as a precaution, and you can keep it in your back pocket easily. I also go jogging with it. I think I have an average sized head, short hair; the large fits me well.Pros: Great design, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: Cost
Warm Up Fast; fits anywhere
January 19, 2013
I bought this hat in both sizes and two colors (so far. I want another!), and tried it on friends, so I feel I know a lot about the Transcendent Beanie. It exemplifies what lightweight backpacking is all about: maximum warmth and dependable quality taking almost no space and weight. It goes EASILY into its own pocket the size of 2 or 3 thumbs and could possibly still be jammed into your jeans' watchpocket. It can even hang [I think] from your keychain. This is handy not just for hiking & climbing mountains, but for your pocket or daypack on the way to work, your glove compartment, or a ladies' wristlet purse when she's out late. Why? 90% of the heat you lose comes from your head. If you want to avoid pneumonia, a hat is the #1 thing you need, and when it's cold a hoodie is not enough. Layer with this. In my opinion, unless youre a child or like your hats tight [I dont!] you should order medium/large, not the small medium. Or it will fit like a regular beanie, not like the promised "A sleeping bag for your head" ( I dont much the small elastic band under the fabric which holds it on, especially in the small medium but i should mention I have a special horror of tight hats as I suffer from migraine headaches.) I have a read thing for silky, down sleeping bags and things that remind me of them. and this, especially in the larger, loftier size, does! Which really justifies the cost: It's made like a zillion buck Western Mountaineering, Montbell or other top-notch featherweight bag, with just a dusting of down to create air space between thin soft airy fabric sewn STRONGLY into perfect little baffles. Any product like this can leak a feather eventually, especially if your dog or cats get hold of your things and go postal. But a badly made thing like this wont pack down, fluff up, or hold its stuffing at all. This item has _none_ of those problems. I use my stuff really really hard all year- which is not how youre supposed to treat your ultra-lightweight goodies. Even so, this baby has not leaked, nor have seams pulled, nor has it punctured. Frankly it seems preposterously unkillable. I want some more of these in the other colors. Drawbacks: off your head it's so tiny it's easy to lose track of. Also, beanies arent so flattering, especially tight one, but maybe the right color is the trick :D Oh, what I meant to say is: you pull this miracle worker from a pocket and before your friend can say "What's that" youve given it a tug and shake and crowned yourself with it. And by the time they say, "Where was that hiding?" you're not shivering anymore. It works so well you can even hand it over briefly and get the chill off your friend too. It's that good. Hey, you might even like the small.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, warm, soft, compact, convenient, light, Cons: Cost, easy to lose
