Great protection from the elements
December 20, 2010
I have a few Outdoor Research pieces and love them all. OR is always of the highest quality, super functional, and good-looking. This softshell is no exception--great weather protection and cute enough to wear around town. The fit seems a little bulky in the shoulders, but as the fabric breaks in, it relaxes and looks better. Fits true to size.

Go-To Jacket
October 12, 2011
This is my go-to jacket for three season fickle weather on the east coast. I've worn this jacket in low 60F to 30F with wind, sun, snow and rain and always felt comfortable. The outer ventia material is durable and flexible, although around the neck it is sometimes too rigid, so the zipper can be scratchy when unzipped. The hood fits well, provides good cover and doesn't slide off when raining. An excellent jacket to go through fall, winter, and spring. I am now a believer in Outdoor Research jackets.
Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of useGreat in high wild places

I have used this jacket snowshoeing to -26 degrees celcius and to climb 7,123m Pik Lenin and am very impressed with its ability to cut wind and keep me dry. Excellent fabric and warm. I only give it four stars because the pockets are a little low and sit right on a backpack and/or harness strap so are difficult to access. Also the neck is quite stiff and while comfortable with the hood up (which is perfect with or without a helmet) it is a little annoying unless unzipped a short way with the hood down. This jacket performs very well in the harshest conditions. I am a 180cm, 75kg female and the large fits well over a base layer and fleece so perhaps since I am big the sizes do run large.

This jacket rocks!

I wanted a soft shell I could still wear in Washington weather - warmish snow and rain and lots of wind up in the mountains. I am really pleased with how windproof and waterproof this jacket is. Haven't been in a downpour, so I can't speak to that yet. It looks great and fits great, too.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Ease of use, Great valuecomfortable, sleek and stretchy

If OR had not created the Mithrilite jacket, I probably would have appreciated this jacket more. It definitely does the job ( non restrictive and weather protection) BUT it does not have pit zips to vent when exertion causes one to overheat. The quality is OR excellent. I am 5'4"weighing about 115lbs. and would use the small for a comfortable fit or the medium to fit a vest or similar under layers.
Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, Ease of use, Cons: needs pit zipsGreat Jacket

The Mithril is a great looking jacket and is my first Outdoor Research purchase. I was a little worried about it's construction and comparable quality , as I have been a faithful Northface customer for over 10 years. Outdoor Research has put all of my concerns to rest. I love the weatherproof zippers and internal pocket. The lining is light and cozy and the softshell sheds weather well. I bought a women's medium and it fits true to size. I am 5'2 and weigh 105 lbs. I have plenty of room for whatever base layers I may need. I pair this jacket with the Outdoor Research Aspire (Gore Tex shell) when the weather is severe, be it rain or heavy/blowing snow. The two jackets complement each other nicely and can withstand anything winter can throw at them, all the while keeping me comfortable, warm, and dry. I highly recommend these jackets!

Sharp looking jacket that provides plenty of weather protection. The tapped seams adds great water protection and the fit is very comfortable.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Great valueTough...too tough

This jacket definitely can stand up to weather...but I couldn't stand to wear the jacket. It doesn't yield very well to its human inhabitant, just as it doesn't yield to the elements. Fit was OK, especially with layers underneath. But without being able to actually comfortably perform necessary tasks in it, I am better off getting wet and using my old stand by coat. Returned it. Would try it again if a new, more maleable version comes out in future.
Pros: Build quality, Cons: Bad designGreat fit, comfortable, cute

I love this jacket! It fits great and is very comfortable. I use it for snowboarding and wearing around town. It's very well made (like all of the OR products I own)and there are no extra bells and whistles, just a good quality jacket. I bought the Sky colored one and the actual color is a little brighter and has more of a turquise color to it. I like the actual color better than how it looks from the photo.
