duffel compare
May 25, 2011
i would rate my new patagonia duffel excellent but havent had enough time to really test durability/quality. therefore, rating is good. i own a pretty new north face duffel and a patagonia black hole (purchased in mid '90's) and needed a another medium size duffel. i think the north face is excellent but had such a good experience with original patagonia black hole that wanted to give the new patagonia duffel a try. also, liked the new color offerings as compared to old choices ...black or black. the patagonia bag and north face bag are very very similar. the main difference is the fabric. the north face is heavy fabric (closer to original patatgonia black hole) that seems like it will be more durable. however, i dont doubt patagonia product people have sourced a lighter material that will prove to be extremely durable as well. i have only used the bag a few times so much too early to judge durability. there are sizes to fit whatever your needs are. remember the xl bag fully packed is extremely heavy. both bags have u-shaped opening which is great for filling as well as searching for stuff inside. both have net pockets inside. both have shoulder straps. both bags have been rained on and passed waterproof with flying colors. one possible minus - it should be easier to remove the shoulder straps when they are not in use. for example, assume a person uses the shoulder straps to get bag to airport check-in. then it would be better to take them off and store them so the airline baggage handlers dont sling the bag by one of the shoulder straps ...which i've witnessed several times. so far duffel is great. long way from being able to check box "lasts forever".

Great Bag!!!

I purchased this bag as a replacement of a Patagonia Wet/Dry bag that I have had for about 20 years or more. I wore that one out using it so much and this one is the perfect replacement! I really like the built in backpack straps and the large openings. Recently used it for my annual volunteer trip to the top of Mount Washington in NewHampshire, home of the 'World's Worse Weather' and it functioned flawlessly! I plan on purchasing the other two sizes to replace the larger ones in my Wet/Dry series. Very durable with taped seams inside, haul handles on either end and numerous zippered compartments for storing small items. This bag is much more versatile than the earlier Wet/Dry bags although it doesn't have the mess area to place wet items.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of useSturdy yet dependable

Bought this duffel bag for my college age nephew who constantly travels. I thought this woud be perfect for him since he is studying abroad and takes trips every weekend . He LOVED the duffel bag. It is very well constructed and durable. I predict he will have many years of use from this bag. Patagonia is very good quality and I have not been dissappointed with any of their products !
