This is the ultimate, durable yet lightweight, highly-breathable soft-shell/hard-shell ski jacket for the demands of constant motion through variable conditions in both the backcountry and frontcountry.
This lightweight, durable jacket, with its combination of hard-shell and soft-shell fabrics, excels when the blue of morning gives way to serious accumulation. The lightweight, supple soft-shell provides a high degree of breathability for going the distance under a full head of steam, and 2-way stretch to enhance athletic moves. Two-layer waterproof reinforcements over the shoulders and the backs of arms maintain alpine durability along with storm performance. Pit zips vent excess heat when you?ve reached the boiling point on long boot paths, and the Welded Seam construction increases stuffability and softness, reduces weight, and provides absolute wet-weather protection. The textured mesh interior moves moisture away from the body and glides snaglessly over layers. Other inside features include a stretch powder skirt, a stealthy lift-ticket holder, mesh drop-in pocket for skins, and a zippered security pocket. With articulated elbows, two zippered chest pockets (one is for an audio device) and two torso pockets that also serve double-duty as fast-forward vents.

I received my new light smoke flash jacket in the mail today. Right out of the box I can see that Patagonia paid a lot of attention to detail. For warm days the pit zips zip both ways and the hood can be removed, and for blustery winter days the fleece-lined collar comes to your nose when fully zipped -- offering your neck and face ample protection from the elements. Regarding size, it runs big overall and the sleeves are very long. Order a size down even if you plan to wear plenty of layers. Last, the photo of the essential blue color is accurate. It's a beautiful, medium-toned blue that leans toward purple. The lighter color has a small checkered weave. I read another review that indicates that the hood is not helmet compatible. I tested this out and the hood fits snug over my helmet but will definitely work.

I have been back country skiing this year in Oregon too many times. My old ski jacket was big, bulky and ancient. I wanted someting slick, warm, mega pockets.. and I got it, the next day even!
A slot for my skins, my camera, ipod, sweets and even a back clip for the occasional downhill pass.
The sleeves are on the longer side, thus I was able to fit into a small, it layers well, breathable....
I love it and would recommend it over and over again. Great for backcountry and resort skiing.
