On high ridges, steep ice and anything alpine, Patagonia's new Alpine Wind Jacket serves as a true "best of all worlds" staple. It excels as a stand-alone shell for blustery rock climbs, cool-weather trail runs and high-output ski tours. And then, when conditions have you ice and alpine climbing, it functions as a lightly insulated windshirt on the approach that doubles as a frictionless mid-layer when it’s time to bundle up and tie-in. The polyester ripstop shell, with Deluge® DWR treatment, sheds snow and blocks wind, while the smooth, lightly brushed hanging mesh liner wicks moisture, dries fast and doesn’t bind to your baselayers. Superlight stretch-woven underarm panels enhance breathability and allow for unimpaired arm motion, and zippers close the three pockets (two hand, one chest). A drawcord hem, elastic cuffs, a heat-transfer reflective logo and regular coil, center-front zipper with DWR finish round out the features. Recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

Mike Kovach - 2009-11-26Great packable multipurpose jacket
This is the ideal jacket for the active athlete. I use mine to wear to the gym on cool/cold days as it packs down so small I can easily stuff it in my gym bag. This jacket has so many great uses and is the perfect balance of light weight, warmth and breathability. I've also used mine for running, bike riding and hiking. The fit of this jacket is spot on. I'm 5'11" and 172 lbs and the size medium is perfect.

Based on weight, comfort and versatility, this is the best shell I ever had. Over a wicking T-shirt and a fleece shirt, it keeps me warm into the mid- to low thirties. If the temperature drops below that, I add a fleece vest, either over or under the jacket. For temperatures in the teens, I substitute a a fleece jacket for the vest, again either under or over. Yes, it's light enough to go under and roomy enough to go over. I like it so much I bought the women's version for my wife.

I took this on a trip to Peru and it performed really well. Did a trek to Macchu Picchu and it kept me warm when needed and breathed really well. Packs down to nothing. It was my best piece of clothing/equipment.

Took this Patagonia jacket out with me on a long day hike and it performed quite well. Plan on bringing it to Mt. Washington later this month. A great wind jacket for your gear collection.

When I was a kid we used to have cheap nylon windbreakers. This Patagonia Men's Alpine Wind Jacket is essentially a windbreaker, except much nicer quality fabric. Well made. Would be good for travel as it is very light and folds very flat. Might be good for some physical activity on a cool windy day, but not a cold weather jacket.
