My favorite sweater, without reservation
December 05, 2010

I have the 1/4 zip and full-zip. They're both wonderful. Each fits perfect. They respect the body's contours without hugging them, like the capilene layers. I usually wear them 10 times before I wash them, then air dry them. My only complaint: the collar on my 1/4 zip is getting frayed after having worn it only one year. I have gotten rid of almost all my sweaters and just pull out the Better Sweaters when I go to work or relax at the house. These sweaters aren't windproof, but they breathe well.

Pros: Great design, Great value

A versatile piece
November 07, 2011

I have been very pleased with this purchase. The fit is terrific. Not too clingy like some pullovers, it has just enough space in it without being too big. Very warm as long as there is no wind. It does not have any wind protection, but it isn't meant for that. It is sharp enough that I can wear it to work without feeling under-dressed. I would and probably will purchase another in another color.

Great Sweater!
January 07, 2011

This is a great sweater. The quality is outstanding, very stylish and warm. My only problem is that it fits a little snug around the arm pit area. It works well with a light shirt underneath, anything heavier would be too tight.

Favorite sweater for father and sons
February 07, 2013

We have several of these sweaters at our home because both my husband and teen sons love them. They are soft, good looking and easy to wash, dry and wear. This sweater feels like you are wearing a sweatshirt but the bit of collar makes it look much more presentable than an ordinary sweatshirt. It's a winner at our house!

Best Sweater I own
November 08, 2010

I had seen these sweaters before and immediately knew that I wanted one. I have to say that it has lived up to the hype that I had made of it. The inside of the sweater is one of the softest feels and the outside is nice enough to wear over a collared shirt and still look great. This is a great combination of warmth and comfort that looks and fits great.

My Go To Layer in the Mountains!
March 09, 2011

I purchased the Better Sweater mainly to use as a layering piece under a shell in stead of a fleece jacket. It has worked very well in that capacity and so much more. On two ski trips this year I started with it under my Primo jacket in the early morning when it was cold and shoved it into my pack once it heated up during the day. Then at night it is a perfect "kick it around town sweater" to wear out. It is stylish but not dressy and very functional. Works great under a down sweater to get to the pubs and then looks great as a stand alone sweater. It does breathe well, dries quickly and the fit is true to size. I don't like packing lots of clothes even for a week long trip, and this sweater serves enough differnet purposes I don't have to. It is my go to piece for the mountains!

I couldn't have asked for a better sweater!
December 20, 2011

Patagonia products have always impressed me. I own about 6 of their jackets and I love all of them. This is no different. The jacket has a great knit outer look, and the inside has the soft, textured fleece that is great at keeping you warm. The workmanship is fantastic as with all of their gear. It's also not too heavy, and so I love wearing this jacket to walk around and run errands in the upper 30s weather here in Virginia. I couldn't have asked for a better sweater.

Great material, but fit can be tricky
August 07, 2012

This was my second better sweater (have the grey). Am 6' 175lb, and got the medium. Fits well, but is slightly tight under the arms. Would be an issue if worn with anything except a thin base layer. As others have noted, the large gets too wide and looks baggy. Love the look and feel of the material, very practical and it wears reasonably well, though does start to pile like a normal sweater. As ever, Patagonia's color choices aren't up to the quality of the garment, so if you find one you like, get two before they switch it to something unattractive.

Bestist Sweater
December 21, 2010

This sweater is very warm with the most flattering styling details and cut. I've tried all the brands of sweaters that are made out of this particular fleece and this one is the best in my opinion because of the form, cut and stitching detail. Also, this sweater doesn't have one of those horrible sweat patches to add bulk behind the neck on the upper back. I'd say it fits large because I wear large shirts but went with a medium in this sweater and it fits like it was tailored to me. I'm 5.11, 195lbs with a V torso

Maybe a little small
March 21, 2011

Overall this sweater is great, but if you want to wear something underneath it I would recommend going up a size. I am actually wearing it right now and have a t-shirt and a light weight North Face long sleeve shirt on underneath and its comfortable but I don't think I would put anything else under it (I am a Large guy wearing a Large btw, and other other Patagonia products a Large has been much more roomy). But cut is great and so warm. Not super wind or water proof but thats not what you're buying it for.

Bought this for my husband. He's a typical large-- 5'11" 170 lbs. The LG fit well with a t-shirt underneath. Fleece on the inside has not pilled after 3 washings so far. Nice sweater material on the outside. Very warm too. Liked it so much I bought one for myself.

I have four of these in different colors, that's how much I like it. I've had similar items from Patagonia that I wear very often and they've lasted 10 years. I expect these to do the same. The fit is a tad on the small side. I generally wear a large in most Patagonia items, but opted for XL in these. Super comfortable, goes with anything, works great for layering over an insulating shirt.

Great look, great quality, awkward fit
November 18, 2010

I think this is an awesome sweater/fleece! It looks great but I think this is cut for a longer torso than I have. I am only 5'7" and it hangs a little too low to look like anything other than a weekend, raking leaves, hanging out sweatshirt. Its also cut pretty big for a large. I am 195 pounds so I'm not thin. Its a little too loose on me. I am never a medium in other clothes but I might have gotten a medium in this. Very well made, very warm, and ultra-versatile. I love Patagonia but I wish it just wasnt cut so long or big.

The Better Sweater is one of my favorite Patagonia purchases. I have always given them as gifts for the family and I finally decided to buy one for myself. I wear it ALL the time. The quality is great, it is comfortable and great to wear under a coat in the winter, and without a coat on semi-chilly days/nights. I will most definitely be getting another one in the near future!

I love this sweater. ItÂ’s perfect for running errands to keeping you warm in the back-country. This kept me warm and cozy as an outer layer with just a t-shirt down to around the mid 40Â’s. I'm 6Â’1, 185lb, 32waist 42 chest and the large fits great. I like the fabric used because it really soft inside while also having a beautiful durable knitted look outside.

Second purchase of the Better Sweater style
December 03, 2010

My first purchase was the Better Sweater "jacket," also from Altrec. It was so comfortable and functional that I decided to order the other style... more of a pullover. Again, the Patagonia quality is obvious; very very nice. It just went through its first washing and when I turned it inside out, a good look at the quality construction made the price most justifiable. Not a loose thread, not a loose end, very detailed and sound in appearance. In addition, it held it's shape very well. I've noticed that 'sometimes' -the past- Patagonia has used different fabrics on a single item that have different shrink results. As such the item puckers or mis-shapes after laundering. Not so with either of these Better Sweaters. One wish (to pass on to Patagonia)... It would be VERY helpful if sleeve LENGTH was added to many of the fit charts. Both of the sweaters have Looooong sleeves; longer that would be expected in a sweater. While it's easy to roll them up, it would be nice to have a measurement online to compare. Can't note anything about durability yet, only a few times worn. Finally, pleased with the Altrec choices and on-time delivery. Thanks for the Free Shipping, too.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Great value, good service, Cons: looong sleeved

great gift
November 05, 2012

I bought this better sweater fleece for my father for Christmas in XL Fennel. I have not given him the gift yet but I can comment on size material and appearance. The "better sweater fleece" is much different in appearance than traditional fleece; it is woven looking on the outside yet on the inside is that fluffy fleece material. The styling of this pullover is very smart, the chest pocket and the arm pocket have a sporty/sophisticate/stylish look. The color variations in the weave give the traditional techie looking fleece an upgrade to something more earthy. The XL appears to be true to size. There is nice piping behind the zipper to ensure there is no zipper itch! I will be proud to give this as a gift!

Excellent gift
April 05, 2011

I bought the Better Sweater for my husband for Christmas. He loves Patagonia products, and this gift was no exception. He was thrilled with the warm brown color, the thickness, the wind resistance, and the overall look. His only complaint is that is can become quite warm when you're indoors, as he was on Christmas day and when worn to a few parties in January. He suggested that its role is more appropriate for outdoor use or for really cold days. Overall, excellent buy!

September 02, 2010

I loved my better sweater from the moment I received it. Put in right away and didn't want to take it off! It's very well-made (better than most fleece pull-overs I've owned) and the fit was perfect for me. The fabric is soft and truly sweater-like. I'm considering getting another one in a different color!
