Common Threads Recycling ProgramResearch shows that the environmental impact of recycling worn-out Capilene base layers into new polyester fiber is significantly lower than making that same fiber from virgin materials. Taking into account that worn-out garments are diverted from trash incinerators, making new polyester fiber from recycled garments results in an energy savings of 76% and a CO2 emissions [greenhouse gasses] reduction of 71%, versus creating that fiber from new raw material. As a base layer, these add an extra level of warmth when you're out in the cold. I find them to be soft and less bulky than wool products. I'm plenty warm with these under shell pants, doing light activity in temps down to 15 degress. Don't think I'd need a Cap 4 unless it got colder. Matches well with the Cap 3 top. Great sleepwear for the house if you don't like traditional pajamas. 36" waist, 34" inseam - the XL is perfect. I absolutely agree with another reviewer...Pategonia should lose the tag!

Worked well as a base layer under shell pants during an 8 hour hike in single digit temps. This was a strenuous hike and they breathed/insulated well. If less active in single digit temps a cap 4 or more bottom layers would be needed. Not restrictive and less seams than the cap 3 top. I only wish they were tagless. Very comfortable to sleep in!

Bought these for my husband. The perfect compliment to the capilene 3 top. Fit very true to size. Close fitting, yet he is able to use a knee support sleeve under the bottoms without any bunching or fit problems. Warm enough to run outdoors in the winter in these with sweats on top. Since I first bought these, I have gone back and bought additional pairs.

I routinely wear these under a pair of warm up pants to take my dog out for brisk walks in the cold of the night and so far they've kept me warm at temperatures below 30 degrees F. The build seems to be very good and they appear as if they'll last quite a long time. As far as sizing goes, I normally wear a size 32x32 pants so I bought these in a medium and they fit perfect - they have plenty of stretch for someone a little bigger but the material is top quality and they don't seem to lose elasticity so they'd be fine for someone a little smaller too.
