Patagonia: Men's Capilene 3 Crew
The Patagonia Capilene 3 shirt is the best shirt that I own. It can be worn as a shirt or under another shirt when the weather gets colder.
The shirt is warm without bulky materials used in most other outdoor shirts. This shirt is a high quality shirt that will be part of my outdoor activities for years to come.

I own four of them
Having four of these shirts in my closet that I use throughout the winter, I can readily recommend them. The capilene 3 shirts are amazing at keeping me warm without be bulky. They tend to pill a little bit after several washes, but not bad. I especially like the long sleeves. I am 6'2" and wear a size large. I typically have a problem with standard long sleeve shirts and need to buy tall sizes (34/35 length). The capilene 3 shirts have extra length in the sleeves which fit me well. The size runs a little small with the intent of being a base layer. Overall, a fantastic product.

Costanza's Velvet
Like George says, if it were socially acceptable I would ensconce myself in Capilene. Patagonia is pricey, sure, but this shirt is well worth the pennies you'll pay. Forget about the knockoffs and off-name brands, as I've tried them all. I keep coming back to Patagonia's line of Capilene. It is well made, soft, fuzzy slipper comfy, doesn't pill up, breathes exceptionally well, and wicks away all your troubles. Well, your sweat troubles anyway.
Cap 3 is the perfect weight as part of a layering system for a cold winter hike or tossing midges into your favorite trout stream in January. And I won't even entertain the idea of skiing in any other baselayer. On a good day, my Cap 3 crew is all I need under my shell. Think of this shirt as your own personal tauntaun carcass...without the smell. I also bought the zip version, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
I'm 5'8" and am carrying a bit of a winter spare tire right now, so the Medium fits a bit snug on mah belly. The sleeves are long but, hey, Patagonia clothes are made for stringy athletic types, not doughy soft backpacking anglers like me. For that reason, I can't do the Capilene pants; they're just too dang long. *sigh*
And shhhh...don't tell anyone: I'm wearing it at the office right now, too. These folks are clueless! Business casual, indeed.

Great piece for the price
I am very fond of layering and the Patagonia Capilene 3 is a staple of my cool weather collection. I will wear this shirt in a range of outdoor activities including cool weather running were you really need clothing that will manage perspiration well. The Capilene 3 is a good weight, can be worn as a layer or just as a long sleeve performance top depending on the temperature. When going for a 20 degree run outside, I will layer this shirt with a Capilene 2 and Mountain Hardwear Transition jacket and will stay perfectly regulated. I also like how it is made with recycle content (not 100% recycled but beggers can't be choosers). One note, the fit isn't standard. I normally wear a large in most shirts and with this one had to go to an extra large to get the sleeve length. It is a little wider than I like but allows for a wider freedom of movement.

High Quality
Fits well and is light weight and comfortable. High quality seams are smooth. seems. Provided good warmth under flannel shirt and medium weight jacket while walking around town at 15F. Exactly what I needed.

Perfect crew baselayer!
The Capilene 3 base layer system is absolutely perfect in the conditions I used them in. I recently wore these on a weekend backpacking trip and discovered that they will very easily keep you warm in 40 degree f temps if you are only mildly active, and keep you warm in 50 degree f temps if you are standing still. During moderate activity I began to get a little too warm, but lucky for me this base layer is excellent at wicking and quick drying. For wood gathering and processing in 40 degree temps the Capilene 3s did seem to get a tad warm. Time for me to pick up some Capilene 2s! Would absolutely recommend to everyone I know.

Snug Fit Base Layer
Unlike another Cap 3 base layer that I recently purchased (sometimes referred to as Cap 3 Mid-weight), this shirt is an underlayer, not meant to be worn as a stand alone shirt. It is very form fitting (revealing) which makes it not so modest, but great for under a shirt on a cold day or as long underwear when you sleep. It is the same Cap 3 quality that I have come to expect and good comfort that only slight bunches at the arm pits. Note that this shirt has minimal seams, straight down the sides (not bending towards the front as on other Cap 3's). I'm giving this a 4/5 because this shirt can not be worn as a stand alone shirt.

Capilene 3
Excellent mid layer, great for outdoors hiking or exercise. Only drawback is they run small for the sizes. I wear larges with everything and the large is too snug and after washing a few times, who knows.
December 28, 2010
very warm gear, great for photographers or those who are standing around waiting. fits snug so goes under clothing nicely.

Good for the money
This is a decent mid-weight base layer that can be worn by itself. The capilene material is soft and wicks moisture - not quite as well as merino wool, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper. Not super warm but works well for moderate activity in cold weather or as a stand-alone shirt in 50+ temps. The fit runs small (I'm 5'11", 160 and wear a medium) but it's not form fit like some of the lighter weights. Has held up pretty well through a couple of winters and frequent washes.

Great Shirt
This is the first Patagonia item that I bought and it has been a great product. The shirt is very soft and provides the perfect weight to wear as a base layer. XL has a tailored fit and arm length is perfect for taller guys. I have noticed that there is a small amount of pilling of this shirt after half a dozen washes, but nothing that affects the overall comfort or warmth of the shirt.
November 10, 2010
Very warm and high quality
Good quality, great tradeoff between warmth and bulk. I wear it to run in 40-50 degree weather and its perfect

I love this shirt
Excellent base layer, I wear mine in the rain forrest.
Wear this casually or as a base layer year around.
I've worn this on mountain hikes and it's enough insulation by itself in the morning with temps down to the upper 40s. When I start to sweat it keeps me comfortable even in direct sun.
My only complaint is that the fabric has started to pill (slightly) under my hydration pack straps after just a few wears. I expect this would be true of all polyester baselayers.

Great warm baselayer Patagonia product
This Capilene 3 crew is another great Patagonia product that keeps you warm without burning up. The fit is fairly snug, just like their other Capilene products, but that's the idea on these baselayers. So far it has kept me nice and toasty during outings in cold weather, even with just a regular sweater and thin jacket over it. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that this Capilene 3 crew is somewhat significantly thicker than Patagonia's Capilene 2 products, so if you are wearing something over it that is already snug, it is probably going to be a tight squeeze.

Good Baselayer
So far so good! Haven't had a chance to take it out into any real cold yet, but it kept me plenty warm by itself on a brisk day. Its very comfortable and fits well. I am 6'3", 180 lbs and the large fits perfectly. Didn't wick sweat quite as effectively as I thought, but still did a decent job.
September 28, 2010
Who doesn't love Capilene?
Had to wait until the Wisconsin weather turned cooler to wear this Capilene 3 Crew. Great insulation for cooler weather. Runs a little more fitted so if you like it loose, go one size up.
September 9, 2010
Great baselayer or by itself
Great fit and impeccable construction.
September 6, 2010
Use for light workout on cool days and for winter first layer
This my second pair. While camping in the high mountains I wore them for nearly a week without developing an odor and it kept me dry despite some perspiration.
June 25, 2010
Excellent Baselayer
Kept me warm and comfortable while backpacking in 40-deg temperatures. Paired the top with the Capilene 3 bottoms. I was warm, comfortable, and dry. Highly recommend these for a baselayer.
June 18, 2010
more than perfect
This is my best friend. I think I wore it almost everyday. It was comfortable and amazingly warm. After 9 days it didn't even smell too bad either. Highest recommendation for a great baselayer.
May 29, 2010
excellent warmth and comfort
I use this a my base layer in Winter and a shirt in Fall and Spring. Very comfortable in these 3 seasons.
April 26, 2010
warm and breathable
Works great, keeps you warm and doesn't restrict movement at all. So, no top marks on the performance part.
April 9, 2010
Excellent as always!
Bought my first one 15 years ago, it was great then as it was on each one of the replacements. Time after time proved to be the most dependable first layer that you can always can count on. This last replacement is even better. One extra tip: large size has been consistently becoming smaller through the time, i guess better fit improves the wicking capabilities, a word of caution although... Thanks Patagonia!!!
April 5, 2010
After 3 years, it is still the one :)
I bought a blue Capilene layer back in 2007. I took it hiking with me in the Sierras and it did take some beatings. Amazingly, the color never fades and the shirt stays true to size. During day time above 10000 ft, I usually wear it with wind a windbreaker; and I feel comfortable throughout the day.
March 30, 2010
Excellent!
Both my husband and I love the Capilene 3 baselayers. They are comfortable and never chafe. They seem to run true to size. Our first choice for skiing and other such cold weather activities!
March 26, 2010
Love it
Good quality, great for a base layer or an outer shirt on those cooler days.
March 24, 2010
excellent product
I have a number of Cap3s and love them all. Warm, attractive and at a great price
March 16, 2010
Fits a little small
I have the Cap 1 and it is a gem, so I got the Cap 3 for something a little warmer. Because it is a denser slightly coarser material it seems to fit a little smaller, particularly in the length. I am wearing it, but at 6'3" and 185lbs, I probably should have exchanged for an XL. It is typically well made for Patagonia.
March 2, 2010
My husband loves it
It is a very comfortable shirt. My husband wears it all the time. The design is great and it helps to keep him warm. Not very expensive compared to the quality. Must buy it.
February 22, 2010
Must have long sleeve.
Too many uses to cover all of it's assets.Very warm, well made, and super lightweight.Great as a base layer under a tee, flannel, shell, etc. Great on it's own for cycling, running. I size up(xxl)as these are not very generous in length(overall or sleeve) and the fit is perfect. Also use under Reyn's to extend their use in cold weather! Will no doubt order a few more in different colors.
February 5, 2010
Best base layer ever and resonably priced.
There are few items that I wear everyday in the cold of the winter or the cool of the fall, and one of them is my Capilene base shirt. I have them in almost every color in crew and zip-up turtle neck and they've made the difference in my comfort level every time I went out doors. I always wear a tee shirt under them and this gives me a longer wear to wash time and another layer to help out. I'm now a large but extra large fits me just right.
January 31, 2010
Very functional for everyday use.
This will keep you warm, dry, and comfortable during outdoor activity. Will not overheat you indoors. Easy care as anything, wash warm and dry in dryer or line dry quickly, will outlast other higher priced long underwear, won't pill up like others and tougher than wool. Also the current Capilene doesn't hold odors as much as other polyester.
January 17, 2010
Quality Product
I have 5 of these and use theme extensively when I do snow sports. Lightweight and keeps you warm.
January 1, 2010
Great top
It 's the best top I had ever, It 's so warm and comfy, I love it.
December 31, 2009
I love this thing.
Wicks moisture away when walking to the tree stand and keeps you warm all day. Best base layer I've used!
December 22, 2009
My husband loves it
He stays cold much of the time and loves this shirt. Keeps him warm.
December 18, 2009
snug
Lovely and snug.Would like them to be a bit longer.
December 2, 2009
Great shirt for cold weather riding....
This is my first capilene 3 shirt. Used it under a windproof shell as my underlayer on a 20 mile bike ride through the woods in mid 40 degree weather. Really did a great job....kept me comfortable with no cold sweat or chill from excess moisture...I now understand why people pay bucks for these...keeps you comfortable indoors and perfect for outdoor exercise. I've ordered 3 more.
November 30, 2009
Great material and comfty
Good fit. Keeps me warm and dries very quickly. I am 5'7 ,wear Size S
November 11, 2009
This product works as advertised
I have purchased a number of these and I am very satisfied. They fit well, are quality made, and work well for running in cool weather. I have Capilene 1 and 2 also, which I wear under shirts or in warmer weather for running.
November 3, 2009
Solid
Quality is top notch. Fits and hangs incredibly well. Layered for colder windy days or by itself in temperate weather, these are my go-to shirts.
October 27, 2009
Great shirt.
My new favorite. Looks great, does a great job as a baselayer. Everything I could ask for.
October 20, 2009
capilene rocks!
Patagonia Capilene rocks, and the fit has only gotten better with time --- the drop hem is sweet on this shirt.
October 1, 2009
Perfect Running Shirt
Great fit, very comfortable while keeping you dry, and cool while running...even on a hot & humid day. Works well as a general t-shirt as well..Should stock up on these
September 30, 2009
yes you should get one
The new capilene seems softer than my old stuff, but just as functional. Warm and thirsty fabric keeps you comfy whether powering up the hill or resting on the windy ridge. The neck is a little bigger than it should be though.
August 11, 2009
scratchy
This shirt is scratchy, even after several washings. I don't know why: and the fit is small. I usually fit in an XL, since I am 6'1" and about 215 lbs with broad shoulders, but not with this one. For the money, and comfort I prefer the Marmot base layers. Heck, even the Columbia Titanium half zip is more comfortable than this crew.
July 29, 2009
Just Works
As expected, great fit and function. Refined enough for "outside of the wild" outings also.
May 25, 2009
Fantastic!
This garment is great as a base layer, wicking away moisture, or as a stylish sporty shirt in less than warm weather. Im still in awe at the positive comments both my wife and I receive from coworkers when we where ours on casual Fridays. I liked the Patagonia 3 so much I bought two more zip necks, one crew neck, and a Patagonia Capilene 4. The 4 has an inside layer (the soft material that almost appears to be sprayed on) that is a good bit thicker than the 3 and a good deal warmer. The odor control may be an issue as some (e.g. Backpacker) rated it as the lowest in a 4-way comparison. I have yet to have a problem during snowshoeing and winter hiking. Summer backpacking should test this attribute more thoroughly. I will not hesitate to buy more of these shirts.
April 5, 2009
Surprisingly Warm
These shirts are great! Comfortable on the skin, tight enough to layer over, but not too tight to be restrictive or appear 'painted on'. Recently skied for 3 hours in 25F temps with just this shirt, vest, shell and did not get cold. If you can get these for less than $50, do it.
January 12, 2009
awesome garment
i was a bit suspecting when i initially purchased the product, but now that I'm using its, the versatility of the garment is just fantastic. I had purchased two black one, i wished more colors were in stock
November 18, 2008
Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just plain comfortable and warm, for those morning and early evening walks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 25, 2008
Feels good.
The material has an almost natural feel to it being that it is synthetic. The construction of it is fine and fits good.
February 27, 2008
Awesome shirt!
I bought this for my boyfriend-he loves it! It was a great Valentine's gift.
February 27, 2008
Best Shirt I Own
This shirt is honestly one of the best that I own. The weight of the shirt is great for everything you might do outdoors...I'm actually planning on buying another one but in the color black.
February 23, 2008
Men's Capilene 3 Crew! 2 Thumbs up!!
It is incredibly light for its rating and the fabric is comfortable and stylish. I highly recommend this for an adventure under layer or for a trendy outer layer at the Pub.
January 22, 2008
Very good quality
Very good all around quality, great fabric... will keep you warm but not over heated... easy care to wash, durable and long lasting... natural odor control... versatile to wear, you can wear in different situations. The only con is the fit on the redesigned Capilene Crew 3 because the neck is looser and the length longer. I liked the older versions fit better, I think it was redesigned for a more muscular fit, a thicker neck I guess. The fabric is even better though, still the best.
January 6, 2008
Excellent product
The capilene 3 is highly recommended for the wet NW weather. It kept me nice and cozy without all the bulk. Thanks Altrec!!
December 5, 2007
Well worth the money
I rock climb, hike/trek mountains, and wear these as casual cloths all the time! I own 2 pairs and love them both! This shirt LOOKS better than most of the shirts that I own and feels better than all of them.
November 13, 2007
soft,silky
good excellent
September 23, 2007
Highly recommended
I took a combination of Capilene 3 and Capilene 1 on a recent trip to Iceland where summer weather can be highly variable. I was impressed with the warmth, wicking capability and comfort of the Patagonia shirts. They look good too. I found the Capilene 3 crew comfortable enough when it got warm or when hiking and warm enough when it got cooler.
August 2, 2007
great multipurpose shirt
very functional layer great as an under layer or as it gets warmer as the only layer. I wore one shirt on a five day packing trip with very little odor. These shirts are outstanding
May 20, 2007
He loves it.
Its versatile, fast-wicking Capilene polyester pulls sweat from my body and helps keep my warm in chilly temps. He loves it. The only reason.
May 10, 2007
great shirt
the fit and the fabric and the color: all wonderful. it's warm and ultra light; it moves with you and it's super comfortable! i have a crew and two zips. patagonia capilene line is unequalled.
April 18, 2007
excellent base layer,
excellent base layer, wicks well, works great under windproof shell for hiking. He loves it.
March 21, 2007
Better Fit than last year's However....
Better Fit - longer sleeves and body than last year's capeline which set in seams on shoulders instead of Raglan sleeves. However.... the new '06-07 versions have Two seams running down each arm right over your anterior deltoid and inside of your biceps. It drove me nuts whenever I used my arms in front of me in a pulling motion - like in most climbing moves. Bring back the old style or move the seams to the back of the arms.
January 6, 2007
Light, warm, comfortable
excellent base layer, wicks well, works great under windproof shell for hiking, running, etc.
November 21, 2006
A must have
This shirt works great. I used it on a backpacking trip along the black mountin crest trail near Mt. Mitchell, NC in November. There was plenty of ice and wind, but I stayed warm. Works great as a base layer or by itself when hiking.
