Description

As a baselayer for skiing, or a top during your winter pilgrimage to Joshua Tree you can count on the soft warm performance of the Men's Patagonia Capilene 3 Midweight Crew. One of their most versatile baselayers, this long-sleeve pullover crew provides exceptional insulation and ultra-fast wicking, all in a quick drying, durable, long underwear top. With a brushed interior, to aid the wicking process, and a smooth jersey face so it slides under other layers, the top features a rib-knit collar, underarm panels, and raglan sleeves that join the yoke and one-piece shoulder away from where pack straps might run. The garment is also treated with Gladiodor® odor control, which works by physically punctures bacteria cell walls, effectively killing it, and through odor absorption. Perform at your best, because you're dry and comfortable wearing the Capilene 3 Midweight Crew for men from Patagonia.

Superior baselayer
December 29, 2010

Patagonia`s Cap 3 midweight crew is very warm and extremely comfortable. This is my everyday base layer from November to February. For a non-wool base layer, the Cap 3 midweight is, in my opinion, the best you can buy. Fit is athletic, order your normal size.

3 crew
December 02, 2010

This 3 crew is a excellent base layer and is comfortably worn alone at 65 degrees depending on the wind. It's true to size and comes in a good selection of colors. I would high recommend is product for a cold weather base layer. I enjoy this product around the home and when on the town. In respect to everyone's own personal comfort zone when cool weather arrives this crew would be mostly likely your best choice as a base layer.

Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Great value, great wicking

cap 3
November 12, 2011

Cap 3 is the perfect choice for people looking for a moisture wicking, heat retaining base to stand up to below freezing temps. It wicks sweat like a charm, which is literally a lifesaver in super cold weather. I've spent plenty of trips wondering how I would make it without my beloved capilene base layers. You might initially be turned off by the price, but they are worth every penny.

Capilene 3 Crew
January 30, 2012

It's my favorite all purpose base layer for living here in Vermont. I have just about every color ever made. Some people complain about the odor of sweat gets embedded with this product but Patagonia has improved that problem and also I discovered Win Detergent online and have had excellent results with that on my older Cap 3 shirts.

Great Shirt!
May 26, 2011

I bought the Patagonia Capilene 3 because I needed a versatile long sleeve base layer for spring, summer, and fall backpacking. The shirt has been great! It has a nice fit and provides a perfect layer for those cool days where a long sleeve shirt is needed (or if in buggy conditions) but still warm enough that you don't need a coat, jacket, or fleece. When the conditions are even cooler this layer provides a great layer to have on under a small jacket, coat, or fleece. Even in warmer conditions this shirt still breathes incredibly well. I would recommend this shirt because of its great build, and most important its great versatility. I don't know how you could go backpacking without one!

Like George says, if it were socially acceptable I would ensconce myself in Capilene. Patagonia is pricey, sure, but this shirt is well worth the pennies you'll pay. Forget about the knockoffs and off-name brands, as I've tried them all. I keep coming back to Patagonia's line of Capilene. It is well made, soft, fuzzy slipper comfy, doesn't pill up, breathes exceptionally well, and wicks away all your troubles. Well, your sweat troubles anyway. Cap 3 is the perfect weight as part of a layering system for a cold winter hike or tossing midges into your favorite trout stream in January. And I won't even entertain the idea of skiing in any other baselayer. On a good day, my Cap 3 crew is all I need under my shell. Think of this shirt as your own personal tauntaun carcass...without the smell. I also bought the zip version, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I'm 5'8" and am carrying a bit of a winter spare tire right now, so the Medium fits a bit snug on mah belly. The sleeves are long but, hey, Patagonia clothes are made for stringy athletic types, not doughy soft backpacking anglers like me. For that reason, I can't do the Capilene pants; they're just too dang long. *sigh* And shhhh...don't tell anyone: I'm wearing it at the office right now, too. These folks are clueless! Business casual, indeed.

Good warmth to weight
July 07, 2011

Capilene is a standard for a reason. You get solid performance both in warmth and breathability for light weight. I particularly like that this shirt does not have seams across the shoulders and that the finish is slightly brushed, which gives it a little extra warmth. The large was just perfect for me at 6', 190. Getting a little warm to wear it now, but a great shoulder season shirt for your clothing system.

Great piece for the price
February 11, 2011

I am very fond of layering and the Patagonia Capilene 3 is a staple of my cool weather collection. I will wear this shirt in a range of outdoor activities including cool weather running were you really need clothing that will manage perspiration well. The Capilene 3 is a good weight, can be worn as a layer or just as a long sleeve performance top depending on the temperature. When going for a 20 degree run outside, I will layer this shirt with a Capilene 2 and Mountain Hardwear Transition jacket and will stay perfectly regulated. I also like how it is made with recycle content (not 100% recycled but beggers can't be choosers). One note, the fit isn't standard. I normally wear a large in most shirts and with this one had to go to an extra large to get the sleeve length. It is a little wider than I like but allows for a wider freedom of movement.

Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, Cons: fit

Good, not great
January 03, 2011

I have many Patagonia Capilene pieces - Cap1, Cap2, Cap3, Cap4 and Wool2. I have to say that the Capilene 3 is my least favorite. It never seems to drape correctly. The old design was not as snug, but way too short. This new version Fall 2010 is much better, it fits a little tight; I am 5' 8". 160 pounds and the large is sung. My biggest issue is it rides high when you lift your arms to do anything active. Nothing is worse than being outside in the cold and having a wind blast hit your mid section. If you tuck this shirt in - it's great.

Standard issue, quality Patagonia base layer. Soft in the inside and wicks sweat away fast. I always have one on in the winter. Fits true, I am 6-0, and 195. The large fits perfect. NOT form fitting, but a close fit. Perfect under a shell

Pros: Great design, Performance

Newest version now called 3 Midweight
October 30, 2010

5+ years ago this was called "Capilene Midweight Crew". Then the had a newer version with a different fabric and fit called "Capilene 3 Crew". Now Patagonia have the newest version and they call it "Capilene 3 Midweight Crew". The last two excellent versions have performed very well, and been very durable. Fit is a matter of opinion, as the neck changes each model. This newest version does seem like a combination of the last two. Now it is smoother more like the old midweight, but seems softer as it is brushed inside. Not sure if that will mean it is less durable. The fit seems somewhat larger than the old version, so not as form fitting. This should be very functional and comfortable, in Patagonia's tradition.

Too many uses to cover all of it's assets.Very warm, well made, and super lightweight.Great as a base layer under a tee, flannel, shell, etc. Great on it's own for cycling, running. I size up(xxl)as these are not very generous in length(overall or sleeve) and the fit is perfect. Also use under Reyn's to extend their use in cold weather! Will no doubt order a few more in different colors.

cap 3
June 21, 2011

First time purchase of a capilene product from patagonia. I now understand the loyal following. Purchased this top and bottoms in #3 to use for fly fishing trip in early April this year. River was still chilly and mornings and early evenings were cool so this was the perfect baselayer for those conditions. I ordered 2x top and it fits very well. Plenty of sleeve and body. Garment moves very well and I will say I like the offset seams on the yoke of the top. Its functional not only for packing but I think it adds to the flexibility of action when casting or paddling or other movements. Product is warm when you need it to be and remains light enough if you shed some layers during activity.

Fits Large
January 08, 2011

Same great performance as usual. I've been wearing Cap-3 for years and they work great as a baselayer for skiing. However, this new style fits much larger than the older ones. I'm 5'11"/185 and my older Cap-3 shirts are all Large, with a snug fit, but the Large in the new style is bulky in the chest and long in the arms and on the waist -- too long to wear under most of my t-shirts. The cut it aso straight at the waist, not rounded.

I love this shirt
November 06, 2010

Excellent base layer, I wear mine in the rain forrest. Wear this casually or as a base layer year around. I've worn this on mountain hikes and it's enough insulation by itself in the morning with temps down to the upper 40s. When I start to sweat it keeps me comfortable even in direct sun. My only complaint is that the fabric has started to pill (slightly) under my hydration pack straps after just a few wears. I expect this would be true of all polyester baselayers.

Snug Fit Base Layer
January 03, 2011

Unlike another Cap 3 base layer that I recently purchased (sometimes referred to as Cap 3 Mid-weight), this shirt is an underlayer, not meant to be worn as a stand alone shirt. It is very form fitting (revealing) which makes it not so modest, but great for under a shirt on a cold day or as long underwear when you sleep. It is the same Cap 3 quality that I have come to expect and good comfort that only slight bunches at the arm pits. Note that this shirt has minimal seams, straight down the sides (not bending towards the front as on other Cap 3's). I'm giving this a 4/5 because this shirt can not be worn as a stand alone shirt.

April 12, 2012

I recently purchased this to replace my old cotton "long johns" I'd been wearing while fly fishing for years. Didn't like the whole "cotton kills" idea. Anyway, shortly after I bought these I fished all day in ~40 F degree weather wearing only this baselayer and a Patagonia Nano-Puff jacket and was never uncomfortably cold. Since I received this a month of so ago I've worn it fishing 10+ times fishing anywhere from 40-65 degree's either by itself or under a variety of jackets and it kept me suitably warm.Even by itself in moderate weather it keeps me comfortable. Another great feature of this garment is the moisture-whisking capability. Any perspiration is quickly whisked away and dries exceptionally quick. Something that didn't happen with my old cotton base layers. I would highly reccomend this product to anyone looking for a highly versatile baselayer. The only downside is it is supposed to have a "slim" fit but on me (6' 4" 160lbs) its pretty loose and runs larger then my other same sized Patagonia products. Regardless, i'd by another (perhaps one smaller size) anytime.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: Cost

January 03, 2010

Purchased the Capilene 3 to see how well it keeps me warm in a Maine winter. So far, it's doing a great job as a baselayer around the 15 to 20 degree range and I suspect it will do well a little colder, as I am sure the temperature will get before Spring.

Excellent!

Both my husband and I love the Capilene 3 baselayers. They are comfortable and never chafe. They seem to run true to size. Our first choice for skiing and other such cold weather activities!

Best base layer ever and resonably priced.
January 31, 2010

There are few items that I wear everyday in the cold of the winter or the cool of the fall, and one of them is my Capilene base shirt. I have them in almost every color in crew and zip-up turtle neck and they've made the difference in my comfort level every time I went out doors. I always wear a tee shirt under them and this gives me a longer wear to wash time and another layer to help out. I'm now a large but extra large fits me just right.

Use for light workout on cool days and for winter first layer
June 25, 2010

This my second pair. While camping in the high mountains I wore them for nearly a week without developing an odor and it kept me dry despite some perspiration.

Great warm baselayer Patagonia product
October 10, 2010

This Capilene 3 crew is another great Patagonia product that keeps you warm without burning up. The fit is fairly snug, just like their other Capilene products, but that's the idea on these baselayers. So far it has kept me nice and toasty during outings in cold weather, even with just a regular sweater and thin jacket over it. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that this Capilene 3 crew is somewhat significantly thicker than Patagonia's Capilene 2 products, so if you are wearing something over it that is already snug, it is probably going to be a tight squeeze.

March 30, 2010

I bought a blue Capilene layer back in 2007. I took it hiking with me in the Sierras and it did take some beatings. Amazingly, the color never fades and the shirt stays true to size. During day time above 10000 ft, I usually wear it with wind a windbreaker; and I feel comfortable throughout the day.

Pros: includes two sleeves

Perfect bottoms.
April 02, 2010

I believe this bottom is the most famous baselayer in the outdoor field, Capilene 3 can be used in three seasons: winter, spring and autumn. There are many features about it that I like: quick-dry,warm and wicks perspiration well.

I own four of them
April 27, 2011

Having four of these shirts in my closet that I use throughout the winter, I can readily recommend them. The capilene 3 shirts are amazing at keeping me warm without be bulky. They tend to pill a little bit after several washes, but not bad. I especially like the long sleeves. I am 6'2" and wear a size large. I typically have a problem with standard long sleeve shirts and need to buy tall sizes (34/35 length). The capilene 3 shirts have extra length in the sleeves which fit me well. The size runs a little small with the intent of being a base layer. Overall, a fantastic product.

Versatile Base Layer Garment
January 23, 2011

I love Patagonia Capilene 3 garments. I find Cap 3 to be the most versatile weight of all of the Capilene 3 series. I have the Zip-T, Turtleneck, and the crew neck. I like the crew neck when I want something that adds a bit of warmth to the body core, but will not cause overheating with vigorous physical activity. The crew neck is just like a long sleeve T-shirt. I like it a lot.

Perfect crew baselayer!
January 18, 2011

The Capilene 3 base layer system is absolutely perfect in the conditions I used them in. I recently wore these on a weekend backpacking trip and discovered that they will very easily keep you warm in 40 degree f temps if you are only mildly active, and keep you warm in 50 degree f temps if you are standing still. During moderate activity I began to get a little too warm, but lucky for me this base layer is excellent at wicking and quick drying. For wood gathering and processing in 40 degree temps the Capilene 3s did seem to get a tad warm. Time for me to pick up some Capilene 2s! Would absolutely recommend to everyone I know.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great value

These are great!

Best thermal underwear you can buy. Keep you warm or cool whichever you need. I wore them for 100 mile hike in high altitudes in Northern New Mexico for two weeks - performed perfectly.

August 14, 2012

I have thinner Patagonia Capilene shirts. I love them. I live in them for skiing, camping, backpacking, fishing...I therefore bought a thicker one. It fits well. It is obviously great quality. I really love it. I really recommend them. My wife and daughter have them too.

Good Baselayer
September 28, 2010

So far so good! Haven't had a chance to take it out into any real cold yet, but it kept me plenty warm by itself on a brisk day. Its very comfortable and fits well. I am 6'3", 180 lbs and the large fits perfectly. Didn't wick sweat quite as effectively as I thought, but still did a decent job.

Good for the money
November 17, 2010

This is a decent mid-weight base layer that can be worn by itself. The capilene material is soft and wicks moisture - not quite as well as merino wool, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper. Not super warm but works well for moderate activity in cold weather or as a stand-alone shirt in 50+ temps. The fit runs small (I'm 5'11", 160 and wear a medium) but it's not form fit like some of the lighter weights. Has held up pretty well through a couple of winters and frequent washes.

Pros: Performance, Great value

Very functional for everyday use.
January 17, 2010

This will keep you warm, dry, and comfortable during outdoor activity. Will not overheat you indoors. Easy care as anything, wash warm and dry in dryer or line dry quickly, will outlast other higher priced long underwear, won't pill up like others and tougher than wool. Also the current Capilene doesn't hold odors as much as other polyester.

Great Stuff!
January 19, 2010

I was told how wonderful Patagonia's Capilene products were so I ordered a set....they are GREAT! Did two hikes in single digit temperatures and they kept me warm and dry. I've decided to wear them when I go to the wilderness of Quetico Park in Canada this may during my annual canoe trip. I highly recommend them and have already purchased another set.

Fits a little small
March 02, 2010

I have the Cap 1 and it is a gem, so I got the Cap 3 for something a little warmer. Because it is a denser slightly coarser material it seems to fit a little smaller, particularly in the length. I am wearing it, but at 6'3" and 185lbs, I probably should have exchanged for an XL. It is typically well made for Patagonia.

Warm and breathable
February 09, 2011

I bought this baselayer top last week. It's very nice and soft fabric. Tried it with Capilene bottoms last week on a sailing trip. It works just perfectly - keeps me warm and dry. Probably will buy Capilene 1 or 2 (lighter) for the summer season.

The fit has changed - much looser
March 16, 2011

Patagonia has done it again. They have taken an awesome product and changed the fit. Maybe it's the growing waistlines of Americans. Maybe fat people complained that they couldn't fit into the old Capilene 3 from last year. But a BASELAYER should FIT like a baselayer. It should fit snug against the body to wick away moisture. I am left with the same reliable Capilene 3 fabric which now hangs so loose under my armpits that the shirt does little to wick away the sweat against my clammy armpits. Two thumbs down for most athletic rock-climbing, mountain climbing runners. If you're a little overweight or you're built like a body-builder, then this is the shirt for you.

Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, Cons: Cost, Bad design

Warm
March 28, 2010

Nice comfortable material. Capilene keeps you warm it the cold but does not get to hot when it is warm. The Capilene 3 does NOT have a lot of stretch. Sized differently than Capilene 2 bottoms.

Nice & Warm

They fit well (L- 5'9", 160) and have a nice feel. Not too much static. The Cap 3s seem to be the ones I wear the most.

Good for all body types
January 04, 2010

My husband is muscular with shorter legs (5ft10in. around 220 lbs) - I purchased the XL to make them more comfortable so he could also wear as sweats inside the house. He loves their performance and functionality - we've already been sledding and relaxing by the fire in them :-) And the wildwood color is great - matches everything in a guy's wardrobe.

Top 3 favorite in base layers
September 04, 2011

I have several different base layers, and this one is in my top 3 favorite. I love the Patagonia capilene line. Each is different and has it's own unique feel and features. The capilene 3 is designed for cooler weather. To me it has a different feel than the cap 1 and 2. But like the other 2 it is very comfortable. Its light insulation kept me warm in temperatures ranges from 40 to 60 degrees. If it's much warmer than that I'd use the cap 1 or 2. If it's colder than that I'd use the cap4. I like the fit, but the 2010 and 2011 versions have a little different than the 2009 version, in that is a little looser, which I personally like. Around the arms and wrists it fits ever so slightly loose. But not so much that it would seem baggy or not insulate. The cap 3 is 100 percent polyester, meaning it is obviously made of synthetic material. When I compare it to merino wool, I think it is just as comfortable but it is much more durable, and is much less expensive. So I tend to buy more synthetic base layer as opposed to natural base layers. I really like the 2011 colors. Once they go on sale or if this review get approved, I might buy some more

December 06, 2011

I bought the Capilene 300 tops and bottoms. I am 6'2" and 175. The arm and leg length is perfect. The bottom falls to just at the ankle, and the top is slightly above the wrist. They work well for a baselayer, wick well, and are not too snug. I love these!!

Great Shirt
November 10, 2010

This is the first Patagonia item that I bought and it has been a great product. The shirt is very soft and provides the perfect weight to wear as a base layer. XL has a tailored fit and arm length is perfect for taller guys. I have noticed that there is a small amount of pilling of this shirt after half a dozen washes, but nothing that affects the overall comfort or warmth of the shirt.

Great Baselayer
January 03, 2011

I've got about four days experience skiing in Vermont while wearing Patagonia's Capilene 3 Midweight Crew. Its nice to not have to bulk up to keep warm. I'm not sure why they are considered midweight as they are as light as can be, can't even tell your wearing them. Both the top and bottoms provided great insulation with excellent wicking characteristics.

Pros: Great design, Build quality

Excellent as always!
April 05, 2010

Bought my first one 15 years ago, it was great then as it was on each one of the replacements. Time after time proved to be the most dependable first layer that you can always can count on. This last replacement is even better. One extra tip: large size has been consistently becoming smaller through the time, i guess better fit improves the wicking capabilities, a word of caution although... Thanks Patagonia!!!
