A cozy, snug-fitting collar and a deep zipper backed by a draft flap allows for handy internal climate control; biometric construction provides a superior, contoured fit with no bulk. Fine thread detailing and flat seams offer a touch of elegance and a smooth hand. The discreet, angled zippered chest pocket is easily accessed beneath bibs or a rain shell. Made of 50% recycled (and 100% recyclable) polyester from Patagonia's Common Threads Recycling Program, with Gladiodor™natural odor control. Imported. Common Threads Recycling ProgramResearch shows that the environmental impact of recycling worn-out Capilene base layers into new polyester fiber is significantly lower than making that same fiber from virgin materials. Taking into account that worn-out garments are diverted from trash incinerators, making new polyester fiber from recycled garments results in an energy savings of 76% and a CO2 emissions [greenhouse gasses] reduction of 71%, versus creating that fiber from new raw material. Capilene® Core Performance®Capilene base layers afford quick-drying, next-to-skin moisture management for all activities in all conditions ? from high-altitude bivies to sun-soaked water sports.

A Fantastic Thermal
March 20, 2012

I purchased the thermal wear due to the cold weather I endure when I go fishing during the winter. I have other Patagonia wear and it's a brand that I always consider. The fabric has a fascinating feel and is highly stretchable. Very easy to wash -- keep it under 30C degrees, no softeners, and no ironing --- the fabric will be just like new. The main reason I enjoy wearing it is due to its performance...it definitely keeps me warm during the cold weather giving me the advantage to wear lighter clothing on top of it. It may be too pricey for some but I consider it more of a lifetime investment since I know Patagonia gear doesn't wear quickly. The only drawback I had was its size. I wear an L and had to change it to a M. I recommend going a size smaller when ordering. The shirt must be close to your body, like a stocking, to take advantage of its warmth.

Great for Cold Conditions
February 22, 2012

The Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Zip Neck is a great base layer for cold conditions. I actually prefer the fabric from a few years back. It was much softer and cozier. That being said the current fabric is just fine. The claim is that the new fabric is warmer. I can't tell the difference. The Zip Neck is important on a garment like this... at least for me. When I am trudging along on my snowshoes I can open the neck to ventilate. When I stop I can easily zip back up to maintain core temperature. A Patagonia classic.

Great product that was bought as a gift. Fits great and breathable during walks, golfing, hikes, and leisure activities. The half zip provides some added warmth or release of heat when it starts to heat up. 5'10" 155lbs and wears a small.

Very Warm and Lightweight
December 11, 2011

I am 6'1" 200 lbs and have a large. Fits very well in the waste and in the arms. The sleeves are a perfect length. It is very warm and lightweight. I have warn it as a mid layer between a compression thermal top and a hardshell with temps around 0 degrees F while skiing.

Ex wt does what promised
October 19, 2011

per all patagonia products, extremely well made and perfect. ordered to wear as mid layer and as base layer. ordered this one b/c wanted last year's color rather than the new 1980's inspired french paragliding colors. i still havemy 1995 ex wt fleece that i wear around the house and for yard work, and expect this one will last as long. really like the power dry fabric and its stretchy but not too tight. also good as a warm base layer or over as an insulating mid layer. really this is all you need for fall days, climbing, as a ski base/ mid layer. great garment. plusthe quality is top notch.

The Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Zip Neck
March 17, 2011

I have a Capilene 3 Zip Neck in a size XL and the fit was just like the photo indicated, a slim fit. I'm 6' 1" and weigh in at 215 lbs. The Capilene 4 in a size XL is more of a looser fit (see photo) but the zip neck is very snug. With that said, I do like the Cap 4 it definitely keeps you warm. It's a nice base layer to have in your arsenal of winter wear. It was 17 degrees and I wore it under my MHW Parka which kept me totally warm and once I started moving around I was nice and toasty. The Cap 4 performs very well.

Patagonia Men's Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Zip N
March 08, 2011

This is my 1st Patagonia product. Reviews across the board indicate Patagonia is the benchmark for baselayers. The #4 zip neck is extremely warm but fit was a little looser than expeced. I'm 5'10' 170 and the M was not as snug as I expected. Quality appears to be excellent. Time will tell how it wears but so far so good.

capilene is the best...
March 01, 2011

i have had capilene products for many years, almost 15 years it seems like and all of them have held up perfectly. i was looking for a warmer shirt and tried it on at patagonia store in Toronto, seeing which size fit the best. at first it didn't seem much warmer than any other base layer ive had previously. then some days later i wore it out shoveling in a pretty nasty snow storm. high winds and snow. with only the base layer and a cycling jacket on. it wound up being fantatically warm and wicking. fantastic. now i need to buy another. the odour resistant fabric works well as well. can imaging it will last many many years as my "old" capilene has. and still performs.

Superb
January 11, 2011

Hands down one of the best baselayers I have ever worn. Wear it all the time. Incredibly warm and versatile and is simply perfect for outdoor activities in the cold. I can literally wear JUST this when playing very active sports in 32*F

Great color
January 07, 2011

I bought this for my husband. It seems like almost every 'active' shirt out there is either blue, green, gray or black, so I was excited to find something with some color. When it first arrived I was afraid that the fabric would snag-especially because my husband is pretty hard on his clothes. But after the first few wearings, it is still in good shape. I hesitate giving a quality mark higher than good though until it's washed and worn several more times. The fit is consistent with all other Patagonia Men's Large that he has worn. (6 ft 195 lbs) This capilene 4 would be too warm for a base layer in normal situations.

Best Base-layer Money Can Buy
December 17, 2010

This is hands down the best possible base-layer for moderate to very cold weather. It is very warm, very breathable, and doesn't get scratchy or sweaty like other wool base-layers. I have a Smartwool shirt that I never wear now because the Capilene 4 is WAY better! The build quality is excellent and I believe that this shirt will last forever. I wouldn't recommend it for high activity outdoor sports like running because it is just too warm. Everything else though, I highly recommend it!

Great new fabric!
December 04, 2010

I have older Capilene 3 from Patagonia that has served me well and decided to opt for the brand new Expedition Weight Cap 4 that has a new fabric and new design. I wore it outside 8 hours in the 20 degree range under a warm coat. It was extremely comfortable and very warm. I took the coat off after a few hours! The only issues I noticed was the neck was a bit tight at first but loosened up after a while and the sleeves were a bit loose and could use a re-design. This is a great baselayer that I will be using for the upcoming ski season.

I have always used these products for skiing.
November 22, 2010

I just started golfing after a 40-year layoff. This shirt is perfect for temperatures near 60 degrees. By putting another wicking shirt underneath one can go into the low fifties, even into the high to middle 40's. The quality of the product is the very best. It is worth every dollar I spent.
