Description

As warm and easy to wear as a lived-in sweatshirt but with the technical benefits of Merino wool, the Patagonia Men's Merino 3 Midweight Hoody keeps you dry and comfortable during active pursuits in cold conditions. Merino 3 is our go-to fall/winter Merino baselayer. It has a wonderfully soft hand and great warmth-to-weight ratio, naturally resists odor, regulates body temperature, is breathable, and stretches as you move. Patagonia Merino comes from non-mulesed Australian Merino sheep. It's slow-washed for softness and shrink-resistance without the use of environmentally harmful chlorine. Recycled polyester (20%) increases durability, resilience and moisture-management. Details include a single-layer, slim-fitting hood; a high collar for warmth in windy conditions; raglan shoulder design and underarm panels for mobility; offset seams for pack-strap compatibility; and hidden thumb loops. Machine-wash cold; machine dry at low temperatures. bluesign®-approved fabric.

Great Winter Cycling Baselayer
December 07, 2011

This merino hoody is a solid baselayer, but I have some reservations. Number one is that unlike other merino wool products I own (Ibex, Smartwool), this shirt is a little on the scratchy side. For many, this is probably a dealbreaker, but I've gotten used to it. My second gripe is that the hood is not as thick as the rest of the garment. Third, it would be better if the thumb holes were actual holes like on the women's baselayers, not just dinky straps. As for warmth, it's a great shirt. I wear it under a windbreaker when I'm commuting to work--and I've been warm enough even when it's in the mid 20s.

Pros: Performance, warm, Cons: Bad design
