Heavy
February 16, 2012
I recently started switching out all of my Capilene for Merino due to the fact that apparently I am smellier than the average bear and synthetic base layers are rancid after a few days. The anti funk properties and the fact that it retains warmth when wet got me thinking I should make the switch. Upon receiving this top I was astounded at how much heavier it is, an XL is something like 13.2 ounces compared to the 8.8 of the Capilene 3 Zip Top Mens XL. I contacted Patagonia to inquire as to whether or not the Merino 3 would offer more warmth per weight than the Capilene 3 and I was told that yes the Merino 3 offers a better warmth to weight ratio. That being said I have not had an opportunity to test them side by side in frigid conditions but I look forward to it. Quality is what I have come to expect from Patagonia which is rock solid. A great product in hand and on the books, performance yet to be tested in real world conditions.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Ease of use, Great value
