The road trip essential - warm, stuffable, resistant to odor and soft enough to sleep in. Made from Merino 3, the go-to fall/winter Patagonia Men's Merino 3 Midweight Zip-Neck keeps you dry and comfortable during active pursuits in cold conditions. It naturally resists odor, regulates body temperature, has a great warmth-to-weight ration, is breathable, and stretches as you move. Patagonia gets their Merino from non-mulesed Australian Merino sheep, and slow-washes it for softness and shrink-resistance without the use of environmentally harmful chlorine. Recycled polyester (20%) increases durability, resilience and moisture-management. Details include a raglan shoulder design and underarm panels for mobility, offset seams for pack-strap compatibility and hidden thumb loops. Machine-wash cold; machine dry at low temperatures. bluesign®-approved fabric.

  • Fabric: 6.5-oz (220-g) 80% chlorine-free Merino wool/20% all-recycled polyester
  • Merino wool/polyester blend keeps you dry and comfortable even when wet, is stronger and more durable than 100% wool, has a softer hand, naturally controls odor, and wicks perspiration
  • 18.9 micron-gauge yarn and jersey-knit construction
  • Raglan shoulder and sleeve detail seams are offset to prevent chafing under layers and packs
  • Underarm panels with offset seams maximize range of motion and comfort
  • Hidden thumb loops under cuff for extra hand protection
  • Slow-washed without chlorine to prevent shrinkage

  • Machine-wash cold, tumble dry at low temperature

I recently started switching out all of my Capilene for Merino due to the fact that apparently I am smellier than the average bear and synthetic base layers are rancid after a few days. The anti funk properties and the fact that it retains warmth when wet got me thinking I should make the switch. Upon receiving this top I was astounded at how much heavier it is, an XL is something like 13.2 ounces compared to the 8.8 of the Capilene 3 Zip Top Mens XL. I contacted Patagonia to inquire as to whether or not the Merino 3 would offer more warmth per weight than the Capilene 3 and I was told that yes the Merino 3 offers a better warmth to weight ratio. That being said I have not had an opportunity to test them side by side in frigid conditions but I look forward to it. Quality is what I have come to expect from Patagonia which is rock solid. A great product in hand and on the books, performance yet to be tested in real world conditions.

Thin and extra warm
January 19, 2013

The mid weight shirt is just right for high activity in a cold climate. Light weight, with raglan style sleeves that allow ease of motion, sleeves long enough to cover my 35" arms and very warm. I am 5'10" and weight 167 and the shirt allows just enough room for a base layer on extra cold days, without becoming too tight. Very happy.

Warm base layer
December 26, 2012

I love this as a base layer for skiing in the teens and twenties. It doesn't itch like some wools and is much better at regulating body temperature over capilene. I love the thumb holes for keeping the sleeves up in a jacket and the zipper for allowing me to cool down if I get to hot. I definitely would buy more of these when mine finally gives, which won't be for a long time.

Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance
