Fleece insulation is always great inside the tent, but once you break camp and head into the cold it's nice to have some sort of leg insulation for cold weather backpacking and climbing--provided that it doesn't weigh you down. Patagonia's highly compressible Micro Puff Pants offer an exceptional warmth-to-weight profile with a highly compressible design that keeps you warm even when you're soaked. It's windproof, water-resistant and filled with synthetic hollow filament Polarguard® Delta insulation, the kind of stuff that keeps insulating through a cold deluge or two. Like heavier climbing pants, the seat, cuffs and articulated knees are reinforced for extended wear, although you may require a pant with heavier fabric for strenuous applications like ice climbing or cold weather bouldering. While Patagonia's super-lightweight Micro Puff Vest sacrifices a lot of features to shave ounces, the Micro Puff Pants retain the stuff that matters, including full-length side zippers, elasticized snap cuffs and a zippered fly. It's one of the lightest well-equipped pants you'll find on the trail or summit.
Nice Pants
I liked the fit and feel of the pants other than they have a short inseam which is one of the reasons I decided to go with the MH Chugach pants. The second reason was the MH pants were on sale. I think the Micro Puffs pants would be slightly warmer.
Took them to Alaska
I took them to Alaska to stay out at night and watch for the aurora. It didn't get below freezing so it didn't put them to the serious test, but they were very warm and comfy! I'm looking forward to taking them to Nepal and really sseeing how they do!
Roomy, Warm & Light.

Roomy, Warm & Light.
I ordered these pants after I spent a very cold night, with substandard clothing and bag.
These pants work exactly as advertised. They are easy to don - When I arrived at camp I used the full length zippers to put them on, without having to remove my shoes. Nice.
They have a reinforced seat so I tried them out by finding a perch on top of various logs, and stones - The material id not show any obvious signs of wear & tear,
I used the same bag as before with but this time found the set up too warm. Midway during the night, even after opening the pant legs I took them off and used them as a pillow. The insulation just retained way too much warmth to be comfortable inside my bag, for the temperature outside, ~39 deg F.
The insulation, Polarguard Delta, is somewhat high volume; you may want to put them in a stuff sack (not supplied). My pack is sufficiently big, so that I did not need to but, the material is slippery nylon, and they will shift around in you pack.
My bottom line - They over delivered on they promise. They are great light weight, windproof, comfortable, very insulating pants. Perfect for base camp or an extended belay. They will serve me well in the upcoming winter season. (Plus they have a fly!)
excellent product
I used them in Peru after sunset when the temerature droped to 30 and as belaying pants. Velcro closure did not hold very well when they were used on top of my goretex bibs, which is allowed. I've not had a chance to test them in wet conditions, but overall it's an excelllent product.
