Versatile enough to wear alone in the fall or with layers come winter, our R1® Flash works as a do-everything technical pullover. Its high/low interior grid fabric stretches, breathes, moves moisture, and insulates - on the trail or off the ground. Sized for next-to-skin performance, it's still roomy enough to accommodate a thin baselayer. Low-grid polyester stretch panels under the arms and at the wrist and hem decrease bulk and increase breathability. To further reduce bulk, the elastic cuffs and the brushed-mesh chest pocket (now on the inside) are glued in. Made in USA. Regulator® SystemRegulator is an integrated system (base, insulation, shell) that works in unison to keep you dryer and more comfortable over a wider range of conditions than a traditional waterproof layering system.
Patagonia R1
I love this thing. It makes a great top for cool weather cragging, and is burly enough to withstand that uncomfortable offwidth. Also works great as for mountain biking in the fall, and is easy to stitch up if you happened to snag it on a branch.
the answer
this garmet is fantastic. i acquired one about two months ago. it has been a go to top the entire time. i threw it under a drytop for cold washington river kayaking, fished in alaska with it, and will use it for backcountry skiing this winter. packs down very well, moves moisture and insulates like a champ. this is just another great layering product from patagonia. the nepolean pocket on the front is a nice addition.
A Must Have!
They have made a ton of improvements on this R1. I have the old version and have used it a lot. This new style has thin areas around your wrist and waist, better for tucking in or putting on gloves.

one of my favorite pullover
The quality of patagonia is no doubt. I use it as my midlayer for my backpacking trip. Especially, when I don't want bring a fleece jacket for my summer trip, it give me enough warmth on the night and early morning in the alpine area. However, it doesn't block wind.
Fantastic Buy Right Now!!
This is a great value for one of the finest pantagonia product.
Great Buy!

Great lightweight insulating layer
I absolutely love the R1. It is great for what I use it for (light insulation when backpacking in milder climates). The fabric is very breathable, yet suprisingly warm. However, the R1 needs to be worn with a wind blocking shell (I cannot stress how necessary this is). Since the fabric is so breathable, wind has an ability to cut right through it. I would recommend the R1 to anyone who is looker for lighter insulation or a jacket for aerobic pursuits.
the other reviewers got it right
This is my favorite baselayer piece; but it has its niche use. It is pretty warm, so I'd use it where expedition weight might otherwise be used. Won't block wind entirely, but it's already warm. Couple with a windblocking layer it would serve aerobic activity in very cold conditions. Fit is improved over other baselayer models: correct sleeve length; trim body. And yes, it's the softest, coziest top in the quiver. Doubles as pajamas for the nightlife!
The Flash Pullover is everything I had expected.
The Flash Pullover is everything I had expected. Great fit makes it very functional and it has come in handy in a variety of weather conditons. Deep chest zipper allows for convenient temperature control.
Good all around pullover
You can't go wrong with this pullover--it can be used with or without an outer shell. It is very light and quite comfortable.
best second layer ever
I have tried tons of brand name second layers, including some alternatives from the same manufacturer, and this is hands down the best. It works alone on a spring day, with a lightweight silk type base on an average day, and with a mid weight top layer on really cold days. The R1 is the best of the R series and really has more wind and chill resistance than the manufacturer's description implies. The only problem is that I can not find enough of it; I would literally use R1 tops and bottoms in some combination every day on the mountain.
Excellent
It's the best pullover I have. I ware it all the time. I'm hard to fit and it fits perfectly.
awesome.
I like this pullover alot. Very light and packable.
great.
This is the second pullover I buy of this R1 type, my first one I have for a couple of years and it's still fine! Great spring/fall wear in not too cold and windy weather, Patagonia quality, get it.
perfect
perfect weight for so many uses. over turtle neck and under shell for skiing, over polo for casual. tight fitting, if you want any room, order one size up, will still fit and move correctly.
Love the soft/strechy fabric
Unbeatable when paired with the R2 jacket in cold weather. Great for cool days around town, too!
Great except the fit
I love Patagonia products cause they've got top notch design and fabric technology that's put together to last a lifetime. Same goes for this one except one little issue... The fit. I had a medium but its fit is not just slim, its tapred to body. So I exchanged to large and it runs too loose. I can only hope that after a couple of washes, it'll shrink a bit. Other than that, if you can find the right fit for this. It is absolutely one of the best base layer I know of.
