Men's R1 Hoody 4.8 5 20 20
Hood Ain't So Good I love the R1 fabric, but the hood is the problem here. i own the regular R1 & it's terrific. Hoody feels & fits identically below the neck. The fabric is soft & stretchy, it breathes incredibly well while still being a warm piece. 5'9" & medium fits well. The hood... it just doesn't work. I hoped the stretch in the fabric would do the trick, but it's awkward fit. Patagonia needs to consider perhaps adding more stretch to hood & re-shaping it, otherwise you're much better off going with the regular R1 w/collar & getting noggin coverage in some other way. from a woman The R1 Hoodie is a legendary piece - and so it's baffling to understand why Patagonia doesn't make this in a women's version (serious - it has a hood and thumbholes, and I KNOW that several women want one)! Since I can't get my own version, I finally caved and bought an XS to try (I normally wear a S in Patagonia in women's clothing). SO, here's the review of a men's piece for a girl... Love the color (got lime). The fit is a bit funky - probably because my chest isn't quite as big as a guy, and my hips are a bit bigger. But it does seem that Patagonia has re-sized this piece this year. I tried on the XS last year, and it fit like a trim sweatshirt - but definitely couldn't be used as a baselayer (and no, I've lost weight since last year, not gained weight). This year the XS fits more snugly all over, which is nice to find out. I purchased this as an alpine climbing piece - primarily as an ultra-warm baselayer for ice climbing and winter mountaineering. Haven't gotten to field test it yet, but as far as indoor trying on goes...thumbholes are awesome. Hood fits nice and snugly, maybe even too snugly...the face hole is pretty tiny - though I'm sure that when it's bitter cold I'll appreciate this. Fits well underneath a helmet, and the length is extra long to make sure that no skin is ever exposed (it's long enough to tuck into my softshells, if I so desire). So, not perfect - and for the price, it would be nice to have one actually designed for women. But for now, it's still pretty much the best thing out there. October 18, 2011
Warm in the Winter (or Spring or Fall) I bought this Patagonia layer thinking I would wear it as a base layer mostly during Alpine skiing. I found that it was perfect as my second layer on dry Nordic Touring. You can zip down the front and give yourself ventilation during moderate aerobic activity in moderately cold temperatures. The hood comes in handy when in need of a little extra warmth for your head. The hood fits under a helmet and comes up and covers your lower face. Overall good design, light weight and warm. Great update to a great product! I've owned 4 R1 Patagonia pullovers over the years and they have all been great. Whether around the house or on a long haul camping trip these tops keep you just right. Not too hot and not too cold. The hoody is a great step up! I love the way the hood zips up and to the side to avoid riding directly under your chin as well as the hood sizing being snug around your head and face. The extra length is perfect for keeping the pullover in place while wearing a climbing harness or pack as well as preventing it from riding up while seated. The thumbhole feature is nice for many reasons, one being that it helps keep the sleeves where they should be while layering. Overall I cannot recommend this hoody enough. It's by far my favorite R1 top and I have tried them all! March 1, 2011
Great value After hearing so many good review on this product, I finally decided to buy this jacket. Compared to other jacket , this product fits to my body very well and warm me up enough for hiking situations. I am very glad buying this. Great value for this price. December 29, 2010
Great Fit; Well Constructed Item This hoody has become my favorite in the short time I've had it. It's already being put through the test as a base layer under my Patagonia Guide Jacket on a couple of hikes around the Hudson Valley. It allows ease of movement, it wicks away moisture and it fits and feels great. I am considering getting a second one. Yes, it is pricey for a base/mid layer. However, Patagonia's ironclad guarantee and quality make it a worthwhile investment. December 17, 2010
All time favorite go-to The R1 Hoody has become my favorite top from Patagonia. It is so comfortable and versatile. It is very compressible, packs down nicely and provide excellent warmth in a variety of conditions. I really like how I can throw over a capilene 1, 2 or 3 and be perfectly comfortable down to 40 degrees. In lower temperatures it becomes to best mid layer, throw a R2, puff vest or Nano over it an you are good down to 25 degrees. Also like how long it is and the optional hand coverage. December 6, 2010
great layer Great second layer for ski trekking. Hood up during the cold early mornings. Hood down when the weather and/or you warm up during the day. Wore it climbing at the Red River Gorge Thanksgiving weekend. Not why I bought it but it's snug fit, warmth, and beathability made it the garment of choice. November 29, 2010
Strong work horse of a technical base layer! Had an older one in llama brown I used for backpacking and rock climbing. Kept me warm on Fall approaches and fit well under a harness and when layering. Very comfortable in belay mode with the hood up to take the bite out of the Fall chill. Bought a second black one to use ski touring and ice climbing. This piece is versatile to say the least and I can't seem to wear it out. It's a work horse! January 23, 2010
good stuff Hoody looks and feels good. It is a little unorthodox with a unique collar but looks great. January 19, 2010
One of the best items I have ever bought I love the length, it fits amazing, and is warm when it needs to be but breathes at the same time. Just buy it you will not regret it. January 17, 2010
Patagonia....you know by the name its gonna be good This is a comfortable, wonderfully technical cool weather hoody. I love it for cool morning trail runs, for cool day climbs, and I use it regularly as a layer for hiking/backpacking. Plus...its a good looking article of clothing if you just want to wear it around town; essentially, it's top of the line clothing for ever situation (also if you climb with a helmet it has a very roomy hood to accommodating said helmet). Although you should expect to use this hoodie in cold conditions, its very light. Great hoodie for layering or just to use on 'cool' days... January 12, 2010
Ninja looks and function Must have! The R1 is a great base layer for alpine climbing/snow sports. The hood functions perfectly even under a helmet and the offset zipper helps prevent zipper stacking. If nothing else you will look cool wearing it! January 9, 2010
Great light layer I have a old R1 that is still going strong despite ember holes from campfires and rock scrapes, but always wanted the hoody. Scored it on sale and am very happy with it. Great as usual quality, plan to pair it with my super LW Houdini. December 3, 2009
Great service I bought this as a present but the service and turnaround was great. The price was also the best I could find. November 30, 2009
Long climbs, long skis... long days This garment fits true to form, and is amazingly detailed as a utility piece for those long days of going hard. The deep front zip gives the much needed ventilation at belays, but zips up high and offsets off the chin to keep the heat in and a helmet strap from chaffing when the wind kicks up. The hood fits snug under a helmet. The thumb loops keep the wrists warm for belays and keeps the snow from creeping up your sleeve when skiing. The R1 material is toasty for the torso, but then at the waistline the material is less bulky and smoothly finished to virtually eliminate bunching up under a harness or waist belt of a pack... If you are looking to push it on long days and need a one piece wonder to cover you for the fluctuation of body temps and weather, this is it! November 18, 2009
A solid piece of gear After spending 26 days on McKinley with a two week storm keeping us pinned down at 14,000 ft, I cannot think of life without my hoody. It is comfortable enough to wear as a base layer or on top of it. The thumb holes and intigrated hood are functional additions that really work. The best part is the fit, the extended cut in the back is perfect for keeping the heat in and the cold out during any type of movement. This is a must have piece of equipment to have. August 11, 2009
Highly Recomend I purchased this layer after a recommendation from a friend and boy I was not disappointed. It works great when layering and under a shell. The thumb pockets are a great feature and I love the fit. May 2, 2009
Climber's Best Friend This is the best piece of technical clothing I have owned so far. It fits me perfectly, its length is longer so it tucks in without wind of spindrift into your backside. I used it as a base or mid layer. It's worth every penny. February 16, 2009
Best piece in my bag This is the perfect piece for cold and very cold weather camping, hiking, and XC Skiing. I wore this as my base layer for three days of camping and XC skiing in Denali Nat'l Park on New Year's Eve at 20-35 below. It always stays in place, no matter the activity, because of the thumb holes and the special waist band. The hood is perfect, and I wore it in my -30 bag and slept great. A must have if you're serious about great gear. It will be your favorite piece. August 29, 2007
