Patagonia R1 1/2 Zip Pull Over
February 07, 2012
I bought this to be used as a layering fleece to go over other under layers for skiing. We ski in Western NY state and it can get quite cold on occation. This is a very well-made item and I think will serve the purpose well. However, it fits a bit snug (I am a very standard Medium 5'10 and 170 lbs.). I have to be careful while choosing the under layers due to this fact. I was reluctant to return it for a Large as I thought that size would be way too long in the sleeves and body. Other than the fit, I believe this item will suit my needs nicely. Pategonia has a great reputation for their quality and product features.

Compared to the "original"!!
June 17, 2011
This is my first new R1 since 1998! Yes, I've worn the original version for nearly 13 years before finally buying a new one, and the original has been probably my most used middle layer. I was always surprised how a couple thin base layers (combo of Cap 1 and 2) and an R1 with a shell was all I ever needed most downhill skiing days. For such a thin combination of layers, the warmth was surprising. I'm 5'11" and generally range between 157 and 165 pounds. In the original I actually wore a small, but figured with Patagonia changing sizing on a yearly basis I'd better order a medium. The medium fits identical to the 1998 small version with two exceptions. First, the arms are longer, which I like a lot. Second, the neck fits wider and shorter, which I don't like so much. The high, closer fitting neck on the original was a perfect recipe to keep the cold out. Otherwise, the grid pattern is now wider, softer, a bit thicker, and it seems a bit warmer. Clearly Patagonia and whoever makes the fabric (Malden Mills maybe), have made some great improvements over the years. This is still one of those "how can it really be this warm and adaptable??" layers. Definitely recommended.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of use, Great valueAlready own the Patagonia R1 Pull Over? Tell us your thoughts.

Absolutely warm baselayer, I can't imagine it could provide so warmth by its so light weight, I feel very comfortable with it, it 's very suitable for outdoor activities in winter. Moreover, it has a high quality , like other patagonia items.
Worth the $$$

I bought this to replace a low end product of the same type. I use it to run in freezing weather and as a layer under thicker jackets when I'm going to sit out in the cold watching a sporting event. Not only is it much more stylish and functional, but it breathes much better. I no longer get the soggy sweaty buildups around my wrists, underarms and neck. Love the pocket on the chest! Durability: I'm not sure about durability yet, but if it's like my capilene shirts, it will last 5 years easy. Odor: So far so good on the Gladiodor protection. I have worn it probably 10 times (2 runs) with no stink. Fit: I am 5'9" and 160 and it fits great. (Not too tight, not too loose. I wear a compression top under it)
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of useAmazing do-it-all jacket

This model is noticeably warmer than previous generations of the R1 pullover. It blocks wind well when worn alone, and wicks sweat to keep me dry when worn as a baselayer. Tested on multiple backpacking trips and days hikes. Also looks great for a night out in town. This, like previous R1's, has become my go-to jacket for almost everything. I just grab this R1 pullover and go! You won't want to take it off. It's survived the wash multiple times, and is being worn around the house, in the backcountry, out to dinner, and everywhere in between. Sizing is a bit larger than previous generations, so be wary. Small fit me perfectly whereas medium was my previous patagonia size. Great quality as usual.

Can't have enough of these!

This patagonia shirt or mid-layer fleece is a must have to purchase. Extremely good looking and functional, it can be worn for outdoor activities, for a casual work day, and is perfect on weekends. It is truly a multi functional article of clothing! My husband now owns several of these and loves the fact that they are super comfortable, warm, and breathable. For anyone allergic to wool, this is the answer to your favorite sweater. Keep making new colors Patagonia and we will keep purchasing them!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: CostNew fit...same fabric

This is the legendary r1 with a new fit for a new generation? The new cut is more baggy and relaxed. Still looks sharp and has great performance, but I preferred the old fit.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Cons: CostClassic Patagonia

Once again, very happy with Patagonia product. 6'2" 165 and a medium fits perfect. Longer sleeves are perfect for me and a nice fit. Once again, Patagonia is the perfect product.
Pros: Great design, Performance, Great valueR1 is the best!

Patagonia's R1 is a great base layer/outer layer. It breathes and insulates. Great when the temperature is "in-between" as outerwear or as a layer when it is cold. You are assured that you will be comfortable. Performance and durability is key and Patagonia delivers!
Pros: Lasts forever, PerformanceGreat Deal!

Fits a bit small, but super warm and comfy. Stuffs small in a pack, looks good, offers nice protection against breezes (but maybe not strong winds). Dries fairly quickly. Does seem to pick up a bit of BO, but not nearly as bad as a synthetic.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, PerformanceGreat Product!

This is a great item which fits well and has wonderful quality. I would recommend this shirt to anyone who would be interested in this type of shirt. The fabric is very comfortable, does not shrink in washing and wears very well. Nice looking also!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of useAwesome Fleece

I used to have a few tan fleeces similar to this when I was in the military, so when I saw them in other colors I had to make the purchase. I was a bit apprehensive of the price, but once I received it I was very happy. They are very warm and fit perfect with an undershirt (T-shirt). I've washed it twice now and the material and color appear to be holding up well. You do see a bit of "pilling," for lack of a better word, on the exterior; however, it's really nothing noticeable. I am ordering two more today, they are truly great shirts. I'm 67 inches and 160 lbs with an athletic frame, I wear a medium perfectly.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Cons: Costthese are great

Worth The Dough
August 14, 2012
I bough an R1 in 2001, it's still alive & well. The current R1 is a different fit, slightly different material, but even better. The slim fit works very well indeed with the stretch added to material. It does fit closer, but movement is fine no matter what one's activity is. Zipper is very good, goes about 1/3 down torso. I'm 5'9", 155 lbs and medium fits well with a Pat cap 1 t-shirt underneath. It's highly breathable which makes it great for bike riding. Great piece.

Absolutely Fantastic
September 12, 2011
I have worn Patagonia's R1 Pullover for the last 6 years. This pullover saw hundreds of days of use and was my go to piece of gear from ice and rock climbing, to just wearing around town. I recently upgraded to Patagonia's newest version of the R1 and have not been disappointed. They collaborated with Polartec to update their polyester fabric. The result was increased durability and an improved feel. I love it. This is an essential piece of clothing in my layering system. It is a great midlayer that I put over a short or long sleeve shirt. It fits comfortably, not too tight (I'm 5'8" 155lbs and wear a men's medium). Overall I was extremely satisfied with my last R1 pullover. It still had some life left in it, but it's days were numbered. Their new pullover is awesome and will undoubtedly provide excellent performance for many years to come. If you're looking for a great fleece that performs well while looking good (they have a great selection of colors), then the Patagonia R1 Pullover is the choice for you.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Great value, comfortable, durableVery Warm Base Layer
January 22, 2013
This is a great base layer if you're looking for ultimate warmth. Though anything of course can be worn next to the skin and be called a base layer but this is the warmest of base layers in the conventional use of the term--too warm for mrely cool condition. It has a snug fit as base layers do so among base layers I gave it a middle fit rating. Great product--just be sure you need it!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performanceexcellent base layer or casual shirt
November 11, 2011
Great comfort and warmth. Great as a stand alone for Fall days or base layer for winter days. Not too bulky. I have 2 of these purchased years apart and the quality remians very good.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts foreverNot as good as earlier designs

The R1 has garnered a loyal following of users. I don't need to rehash the awesomeness of the Polartec Power Dry fabric. The fit is *perfect*. I am a 5'8, 155 pound guy with an athletic build and 40 inch chest, and the medium fits perfectly either on its own or over a thin baselayer. Now my COMPLAINTS: The garment design has gotten WORSE over the years. The R1 pullover in past years was known as the R1 Flash. The 2007 R1 Flash pullover was the ultimate version. It had: (1) Raglan sleeves (2) A thinner microgrid panel in the underarms (3) The same thinner microgrid panel at the sleeve and waist hems Essentially, the 2007 R1 pullover was identical to the awesome R1 Hoody without the hood. The current R1 pullover has none of these awesome features, and thus, it is less of a technical garment. I really miss the thin capilene-type fabric at the underarms, wrists, and waist hem. I own the current version R1 pullover, but I will not purchase any more. I would rather buy a used 2005-2007 R1 Flash pullover on eBay or pony up extra for the useful features on the R1 Hoody. The R1 Hoody has a thinner Capilene 4 fabric at the wrist and waist hems and in the armpits.

Great Shirt
December 29, 2010
As with all Patagonia, pretty much bullet-proof. Will go anywhere and do anything as an overall shirt or for insulation
Great bright green pull over
July 24, 2011
Ahhhh first the color. Gecko green, rather bright yet elegant, the needed cheerful note for a 50 year old like me The fit : just great for a thinner individual, looks great on me The more important function : it is thin and light, yet extremely effective. I sported it at Big Sur this week end, this is a place where the Pacific Ocean fog hits you often, it did keep me sufficiently warm. Its fabric is however quite breathable. And the bonus, a very convenient vertical front pocket with a zip which adds to the design and in which I can hide my sunglasses or reading glasses
Pros: Great design, Build quality, PerformanceGreat Product - Very Warm
March 06, 2013
This is a great product. It is strong, durable, and great as a mid-layer on any excursion
Pros: Build qualityGreat Fit & Weight
April 26, 2012
Although this is intended as under layer, I have started wearing it as an everyday wear. The size is very fitted so I had to get a size larger. The fabric is extremely comfortable and soft inside. The exterior is slick, and doesn't get dirty either and best, my bulldog's hairs don't stay on either. The material is warm but breathes better than any pullover that I've had! I now have 3 of them.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, PerformanceGreat Shirt
February 15, 2011
This shirt is warm and the fit is true to size. I'm 6'2 200lbs and the large fit me fine. Shirt is a bit costly but hopefully it lasts long enough to justify the price.
