Not oversized like most jackets
I ordered this jacket for my husband, after I saw my son wearing it. I was very pleased with the beautiful color and softness of the fabric. This Patagonia polar fleece fits true to size and not oversized like most jackets. I ordered a M but will return for the size L.

Stretchy, great fit, light, warm
I have R1, R2, R3 and R4 and R2 is my favorite. It is very light, warm and does not get in the way during various outdoor activities. I've worn it for hiking, climbing, sking and even golfing. R2 is also very breathable and dries up very quickly. I strongly recommend R2.

soft and comfortable
If you're looking for a casual fleece that's great for layering, then this is it. I also wear it alone in the fall or spring, but watch out if it's windy - it doesn't provide any help there. To sum it up, it's everything you expect from Patagonia. Great.

Awesome
I have yet to break out the bigger jackets with down to 10 degree weather. Perfect for back and forth to the office or around town. Look forward to using it in the early spring hiking and fishing... should be perfect. Well done!

great jacket
just received my Patagonia r2 jacket a few days ago and really like the jacket. perfect for a fall day and is quickly becoming my favorite choice of jackets. not much on the wind protection but is very warm when layered with a flannel shirt. must own jacket.

comfortable, technical fleece
Love it! Breathes just enough that it's not too warm or hot, but nice enough to keep you warm.
super soft, super breathable, air cuts right through, super toasty under a shell , REALLY LIGHT, but uh oh, where's the waist cinch? come on Patagonia!! i love your jacket, but no waist cinch? i've gotten over it though. first new fleece in 6 years, definitely not disappointed.

great jacket
i love this jacket. makes a great mid layer during the winter and a great outer layer during the fall. great fit for layering but not so snug that you cant wear it as an outer layer. no wind protection what so ever! i have the bali blue color and it it a great color looks more like the lagoon color in real life i would say. overall great jacket for what it is intended for.

Great Light Weight, but WARM coat!
Bought this jacket for my dad and he loved it! He's over 60, so the look of this jacket was very youthful and he felt cool in it. fabric is warm, bright, fits well, and will surely be a "light" winter coat because it was SO warm!

Great fleece jacket
I highly recommend this to all the person who go to the trekking in the fall or winter. I have not concluded the durability since I just started trying this jacket and have a confidence of the warmth for the trekking activities. However, in order to keep the warmth, it requires having the wind proof jacket separately since it also has a good breathability.
So, by using this associated with a good wind proof jacket, you will get a great versatility for the fall and winter activities.

Hmm, I like it, but...
I really loved an R2 jacket I purchased a few years ago. Since it was getting worn out, I purchased a new one this spring. It seems that the new version of R2 jacket is slightly lighter than the older one. It is cozy warm. But I caution you that the size is now about 1 inch larger all around (neck - sleeve - height - chest/waist) than the old one...

This is what I wrote about the R2:
"This is an amazing jacket. When you first pick it up, you will be surprised how light it is and doubt that it will do much, as in work as an insulator. But then, you put it on, and it is as if it is a heated garment. Oh my! I had given my wife a fuzzy hoody made out of similar feeling material and wondered why Patagonia did not make anything so sensuous feeling for men, then this! It not only feels great but it works really well. It is almost too efficient to wear around the house as a sweater and almost too efficient to wear under a soft shell out on a morning bike ride with freezing temperatures. The other wonderful part is the fit! I am 172 lbs. and 6'2" and most Patagonia jackets have been too short in the arms and too short in the torso, as well as too much material in the body. Well, this slim fit got it right, sleeves long enough, torso tight enough and long enough in a Large. I have ordered a second one, because they will probably stop making it, or sell out. As a disclaimer, I have never seen or touched the previous R2 jacket that this one replaces, but this new one makes me glad I waited. Finally, Patagonia recognizes that there are tall people in the market. I had a thermal pro high loft in a large tall from another company, and it was great except the cut was for someone with an eighteen inch neck and a bottom heavy torso. Thanks Patagonia!"
This is written about the R3 HiLoft:
Well, the R3 is the same except a denser and therefore a bit heavier, but that equates to warmth and still light in weight. I personally did not like the asymmetry of a pocket on one side, so I carefully cut the pocket off and now it looks Great! Hey Patagonia: Why not a pocket on both sides? and why not one with a hood (like you offer the Ladies?).
Patagonia lists the R2 as a Slim fit and the R3 Hi Loft as a Regular fit, but I can not feel a difference and the tape measure tells me they are cut just alike in size.
I have been wearing the R3 Hi Loft over a merino wool sweater down to twenty degrees F, and it does just fine!
This new R2 and R3 Hi Loft is so senuous and works so well, it makes all other fleece obsolete."

Great
This fleece is plenty warm in moderately cool temperatures. Patagonia has a great fit and killer quality. It keeps you really dry with it's construction. The r2 is perfect layer that is not as hot as the r4.

Quality at last!
I've had fleece garments since their introduction. Over the last several years I've seen the products use a poorer quality fleece and have a baggy fit. This is great for walking around town or driving your car but for effective layering for active movement a better fit is required. This jacket fits great, has that nice air trapping fleecy fleece and stretches well. You get what you pay for and the R2 Jacket is worth every penny.

I purchased this jacket for my husband for Christmas. The quality is fantastic and very warm in the cold/snowy weather. Unfortunately it was too narrow in the shoulders so I had to exchage for a slightly larger size. Otherwise, product and customer service was great!

Excellent fleece
OK, here's the disclaimer, I've got three of the first generation jackets but have no hesitation at looking at the updated models as possible purchases. This is very nice warm piece of clothing for active and casual wear. It's very breathable so a wind breaking layer is needed in a stiff cold wind. If you're looking for a medium weight, very breathable, well-fitting fleece look no further. I'm 5'8", 155 lbs and a medium fits very well and is form fitting. I'd describe it as a medium weight second layer with essentially no bulk. An accurate description would be that this is the next step up from the capilene series, a capilene 5 if you will. The one thing I really liked about the previous generation was the raglan sleeves and see the updated model has standard sleeves - I hope it fits as well.

my husband loves it
i did a lot of research into various fleece jackets before deciding on this one as a present for my husband. this is the first patagonia item we have ever tried and he loves it. The grey color is really nice. the fit is slightly on the small side but more true to size than i expected based on other reviews i read (he is 6ft and 200lbs with wide shoulders, and the XL is a perfect fit with plenty of room for a light sweater underneath). the best part is the stitching throughout the jacket and the side and sleeve panels which make this more unique than some of the other similar fleece jackets. i am planning to buy one for myself!

Lightweight Insulator
I've owned the R2 jacket for a couple weeks now for winter in NY and it has served to be a great base layer. I have yet to take it to the mountains but I anticipate great performance. The best thing about this jacket is that it's lightweight. Sometimes you don't even notice it's there! You just get unhampered comfort without the weight of other fleece jackets. Wear it under one of your jackets and you're ready for the cold. Top notch product all the way

Super jacket
I have had my R2 for about four or five years now. It is without question a first class jacket for it's intended use and purpose.
For those who have posted reviews complaining that it is not windproof, suffice to say you didn't bother to actually find out what you were buying before you purchased it. It is not windproof, nor is it intended to be so or advertised as windproof. For the person who complained that it won't work with just a T-shirt in cold weather, suffice to say that there really isn't anything that's going to keep you warm once you sweat up a cotton T-shirt in the winter.
This coat is an excellent insulating layer which does a superior job of keeping you warm while active on chilly days. (I define active as something more than standing around outside in the cold, or getting in and out of the car to run errands.) I wear mine regularly on days down into the upper 20's with just a medium weight wicking turtleneck under it and am never uncomfortable while hiking, backpacking or taking the dog for long walks. If it's particularly windy, or a bit cooler than this jacket is comfortable for, I throw a lightweight Gore-Tex shell over it to block the wind and retain a bit more heat. Suffice to say, I can walk the dog for a couple of hours on a 25 degree day in this jacket with nothing more than a wicking turtleneck under it and a G-T rain shell over it and be plenty warm enough.
The jacket shows little wear, even after four or five years. Seams and zippers are all rock solid and have given me no problems whatsoever. It has retained its loft through many washings.

Warm fleece
I believe Patagonia may be the greatest fleece brand in the world. Like other Patagonia fleece, R2 is high-quality and warm. In the winter I don't have to worry about cold weather. But I have to wear a windproof jacket outside it for stopping wind.

R2 Perfection
The R2 is a great fleece that is extremely comfortable and warm. It fits me perfectly and was designed really well. It also is light weight, but still affords a good warmth. A great fleece and well worth its value. Plus, it's comfortable for office work, too !!

Very lightweight, so spring is perfect or layered, which is what I bought it for. I plan on wearing it under the Mountain Hardwear Synchro jacket I purchased at the same time. Mountain Hardwear and Patagonia is a can't miss combination.

Great Jacket!!!
I am very pleased with the R2. It works well as a layer (great ventilation) under a shell and as a jacket. I've owned many fleeces and this one, by far, is the most comfortable and best looking. Unlike many other fleece designs, the sleeves are not extraordinarily long. I will use around town, skiing, and summer backpacking.

Great Jacket
This is another great product from Patagonia. It has a very slim fit so keep that in mind when purchasing. I'm 6' 175 lbs and the large fits well as long as I only have a thin layer on underneath. The jacket is definitely not windproof, but offers great insulation under a shell.

Very Nice
Not only is it warm, but one of the most breathable lightweight jackets on the market. The newly added R1 fleece combined with the high-loft R2 just blows me away, so much better than the old model. It is so light, you might forget you are wearing it, if it weren't for how warm it is. Just be warned, this jacket is not intended for winds by itself, so make sure you have a shell over, just like most fleece jackets the wind will go right through it. But thats because of the breathability, with the r4 you might over heat. I would definitely recommend this jacket.

Extremely satisfied
I've been a believer in Patagonia outer wear for some time. All of my fly fishing gear is by Patagonia. The R2 jacket meets and or exceeds my expectations. Light weight, very warm and very functional. For the price in active outer wear, I would highly recommend to anyone.

The perfect weight
This jacket is exceptional. It's amazingly warm for a light jacket. On 45 degree days I'll wear it over a t-shirt if there isn't too much wind and be totally comfortable. It's slim enough to fit under a jacket and packs well. The cut is athletic but it wears just slightly short on me (the large), but is otherwise true to size. Highly recommended.

I haven't had my jacket long, but for the most part it seems to be great. It looks great, super soft, and will keep you warmer than you expect for being so light. If I lost it, I would buy another.

Pretty much flawless
First off, it's fantastic. When I first got it, I was worried about how warm it was going to be because it is SO light, but it turns out it's quite warm. The R2 fabric's fantastically fluffy. The sleeves are sleek and long (I have gorilla arms), so they slip into other jackets and shells well. Get it, you'll be warm and look like a stud.

Just what you'de expect from Patagonia, this jacket packs tight, has a great warmth to weight ratio, bomber construction, and works great alone or in a layering system. I use it for everything from an early season midlayer for skiing to fall belay duty insulator. Recommended.

Great cold-weather protection.
I bought this for my son who lives in Japan and complains of the cold winter weather. I have a Patagonia R2 jacket that I have been very happy with on winter mountain hikes and snowshoeing, so thought my son might like this jacket -- he loves it and says he does not feel the cold when wearing it.

Comfort, function & warmth
The R2 is a great every day jacket. By itself it is perfect for 40 degree mornings and evenings in Northern California, often most winter days as well. The side pockets are huge with the same comfortable lining throughout the jacket. The one drawback for me, and the only reason I rated it good intstead of great, is the chest pocket is a little small and high, which is where I often keep a phone or money-clip.

Warm and comfortable

Great light jacket
Love Patagonia's R2 men's jacket. It is a great layering weight for 3 season use. I can't seem to take it off but won't get real results until using it in spring/summer/fall backpacking.

warm but runs large
Hi. I bought the jacket a month ago, and I have to say that it is amazingly warm for as light as it is. However, the jacket runs very large in the body. It is not an athletic cut by any means. It could easily accomodate a full down vest underneath the jacket with room to spare. I personally wish there was more elastic in the cuffs and around the waist.

Lightweight Warmth
R2 is a great layering piece for any winter activity. Best of all, it is super lightweight and not bulky at all. It is also warm enough to wear alone on warmer winter days. I've always loved patagonia for their practical gear. It is pricey, but I think totally worth it.
