odd fit
January 19, 2012

I typically wear a size extra large in clothing and outerwear but I had to return this one and get a large. The extra large was very long and wide on the bottom. Since there are no pull cords on the waist to tighten the jacket it can be drafty at times.

Great Jacket
January 17, 2012

I just received my Patagonia R4 jacket on Thursday. I must say I don't normally write product reviews but I am so impressed with the warmth and quality I had to share it. This is my first Patagonia product after years of wearing North Face. I wear it strictly as casual outerware. I live in Alaska and the first weekend I had it the temps dropped to minus 30. I have had absolutely no problem with keeping warm. It is a bit on the spendy side, but after wearing it, worth every penny. I would reccommend this jacket to anyone living in a cold climate

Very Nice
January 01, 2012

Heavy weight, wind proof fleece. Lives up to its description well. The cut is not very athletic, but not sloppy. The fleece could use a hem cinch and the sleeve cuffs should have been finished. Overall very high quality super warm fleece.

Patagonia R4 Jacket
December 07, 2011

Great quality--typical of Patagonia. Although very costly, it is worth it. Although a very warm jacket, it easily packs down to a reasonable size for storage in my pack when the temperature warms requiring less clothing. Looks good enough to wear around town which I do, but is also rugged enough for overnight backpacking.

I purchased one of these in need of a nice layer for backpacking as well as a stylish fleece to wear casually. This fleece was worth every penny considering the price tag. Its snuggly and fits amazing. I've had it for almost a year now and still no pilling of wear after more than normal use-my backpack straps never did damage. The zippers are high quality and I have not had any problems. Like most not so thick fleeces, this isnt windproof. You really need an outer shell if you expecting cool wind. Im 6'5" 185lbs and the large fits me like it was made for me.

June 26, 2011

I moved to upstate NY where it gets very cold in the winter.Bought an R4 for my wife and I.We love it.If we could have one jacket and one jacket only,it would be the R4.It keeps us warm, blocks the wind.Worth every penny.Just wish they would make them slimer like the one I bought 5 years ago.

Great, but not perfect
May 18, 2011

I purchased this 6 months ago to replace my beloved Patagonia fleece that had seen almost continuous 3 season use. Nothing could take it's place, but this is probably as close as I could have gotton. On the positive side, this is even more soft and comfy than my old one ever was, and the windblocking layer works great without having any major effect on the drape or stretch of the fabric. What I miss most is elastic at the cuffs and the hem, to keep out drafts and handle the slight extra length of the sleeves on me. I'm fine with no drawstring. I agree with those that think this is a city jacket and not a technical one. That's what makes it so wonderful. It's growing on me.

Great Casual Fleece
April 20, 2011

To be clear, I do like this jacket and will not be returning it. My only problem with it is that this is not a technical outdoor enthusiasts' fleece. The fit is a little on the baggy side, and the cuffs are also loose around the wrists. This is a great windproof fleece for dog walking, going to work, going out on the town, etc. I used to have an older version of this fleece from 2007, but returned it because the windproof laminate liner felt awkward. This newer version has a soft supple feel, and the windproof barrier has improved. There is no clunky laminate feeling as with the R4 from a few yearsÂ’ ago. All in all, a great casual fleece.

Best Fleece of all Time
February 17, 2011

This is my go-to Jacket when it's cold. I bought one last year and liked it so much that I got another one in a different color this year. The R4 is a very versatile jacket and excels in conditions from midly chilly weather all the way down to frigid, blizzard-like conditions. It performs just as well as an outer layer as it does layered under an outer shell. I am always amazed at Patagonia's ability to pack so much warmth in such a lightweight, compact package. The R4 is much warmer and blocks the wind much better than many of the heavier/bulkier jackets in my wardrobe. If you're looking for an all around great fleece that performs wonderfully in a variety of conditions - look no further than the R4. Another fine product from Patagonia.

Best Fleece I have ever owned!
January 09, 2011

The first day I recieved this jacket I thought it felt a little light and thin. I was really afraid it would not be very warm. WOW was I ever wrong!. I wore it on an 18 degree day with just a long sleeve Tee shirt underneath and I was sweating. If you are looking for a light weight jacket to keep you warm this is it. I wear it alone or under my shell skiing(only on very cold days!). All I can say is WARM! WARM! WARM!.

Implausibly warm
December 23, 2010

I bought this jacket for mundane purposes -- primarily daily activities in New England during the winter. I'm very happy with it. It's been in the 20s here lately and while wearing this I keep getting asked if I'm warm enough, because all I'm wearing is this light jacket. But I am! This is while just walking around, no physical exertion whatsoever. I don't know how they make such a light jacket this warm. It's also quite good in the wind. It's very comfortable and looks good. I only have a two nits to pick with it: - A drawstring around the waist would be nice. - The "hand warmer" pockets let drafts in when they are left unzipped. It fits on the large side, so when wearing it under my soft shell it's a little bulky. But my soft shell is probably a bit too small, and in any event I expect that combo will be good to below zero. I can't speak to its durability as I've only had it for a short time. But it appears to be well built and tough.

odd fitting
December 23, 2010

I love patagonia in general. I give this a 3 because the quality of the materials are awesome its just the fit is terrible. I have 2 of the lightweight r4 jackets and they are great. Wanted something a little warmer so figured I would try the R4. I usually buy S but since I wanted to wear this under my jacket to ski I figured I would get an XS since I have room in the S. The fit on these is very odd. The body width is great however, the length is unbelievable short both in the torso and arms. I am pretty short and I can't imagine this fitting anyone. Without a cord along the bottom and given the short length it just looks and feels very odd. Glad Altrec has a great return policy. This is def going back

Expensive... yes, but it's worth it.
December 14, 2010

Some say that this jacket has been drifting toward city users as this version doesn't include a drawstring at the waist... I would disagree, it's still equipped to handle some serious back-country use. By the way, this fleece is warmer than any other I've worn. So, if you want a minimal technical soft shell - go with the R4 lite version. Otherwise, go with the R4 if you need some serious warmth, performance, and durability in an easy to care for garment. It's also very soft and velvety... hope you like hugs.

Really comfy
November 14, 2010

If you want a really soft comfy warm jacket this is it. A perfect medium with plenty of room for a layer underneath (5' 10" 165lbs). Good length in the arms too. Lining slides over layers easily. It is on the bulky side so if you get a shell over it for more wind and water protection, you might want to think about a size larger, depending on how the shell fit runs. I would probably use a different mid-layer than this if I needed a shell.
