Fit Tip: This item has a relaxed fit. Item fits loosely on body, more room for range of motion and extended comfort.
When you see the new R4 designation on Patagonia's R4 Windbloc Jacket, it's easy to assume that Patagonia added a new garment that's simply made of thicker Polartec® Fleece, but that's not necessarily the case. While the popular R3 jackets and vests offer incredible warmth, they are all wind resistant--not windproof. Patagonia's R4 garments feature a 12.5 oz. Polartec® Windbloc® urethane laminate that effectively seals out wind while maintaining the same quality breathable properties of garments in the Regulator series. The R4 garments are also backpack friendly, featuring elevated handwarmer pockets and no seams along the shoulder or back where pack pressure can cause discomfort. The new R4 series is worth checking out.
Great Value
Great jacket at a great price. I also received excellent service and free shipping too. I couldn't ask for more. As others have already mentioned I recommend that you get a size larger than you normally would on other jackets.
Great jacket at reduced price
Got this jacket at a great price as it was a closeout color. Have yet to use it much as spring is here, but would recommend going up a size (I'm usually a L but the XL fits great) like most reviews state. Shipping from ALTREC was free--but came at a snails pace (you get what you pay for!)
great
great jacket. warm and light and completly breaks the wind

awesome fleece
this jacket is fantastic - practically a standalone winter coat, it blocks the wind and insulates. fantasic coat.
great
A wonderful product still made in the USA.
Very Warm and Totally Windproof
The jacket is very warm. I wore it in NYC last weekend it was about 13 degrees with a 7 degree windchill and i was fine with just a very thin layer. Great warmth to size ratio... Just a good jacket... so far no downsides except the price it is a little expensive but i think it will be well worth it...
highly reconmmended
awesome coat, warm and light
Great fleece!
I purchased the R4 after reading many reviews, on many different websites. I made the right choice. The R4 is a very warm, lightweight jacket.
Great, Great, Great product
I just received the jacket and am very pleased with it. I travel quite a bit and I have been looking for something warm and comfortable that I can layer if I need to. This jacket fit the bill. Granted I have only tried it in temperatures that are the low 40's, it kept me very warm. If there is anything that I would have done differently is perhaps get the next larger size. The large is what a normal medium would be for me. The feel of the Jacket is very comfortable. I am sure this will not be the last of this type of product that I will purchase.
absolutely amazing
great jacket. So warm. So stylish. So fabulous
WOW
I'm amazed by this jacket. Warmest most comfortable thing I've ever owned. Incredibly wind resistant, I love everything about this jacket. The Sapphire is a great color. Haven't worn the jacket in too extreme of a temperature, as it's still pretty warm in Arkansas right now. About the mid-20's with just a t-shirt though.
Excellent
Great jacket!! very warm and light. Very well made!
PAT R4 WINDBLOCK JACKET - EVERYTHING ITS CRACKED UP TO BE
I'VE BEEN LOOKING AT ONE OF THESE FOR A WHILE. I'VE GOT A SIMMS WINDBLOCK JACKET. IT WORKS GREAT BUT IS NOT HEAVY ENOUGH IN MOST COLD/WINDY CONDITIONS. THE NEW R-4 FLEECE IS TERRIFIC FOR COLDER/WIND SITUATIONS. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Simply the best
I live in Chile and Recently I went to the south. I carried the R4 and another fleece jacket to use with the R4 but no need to do that. Simply with the R4 and a capilene (from Patagonia too) was suficient. In the place we feel temperatures around 0 Celcius, but with the wind, its feel like -3 C, but with the R4 was great! The best fleece jacket for all conditions speciality with wind and cool.
I trust in Patagonia 100%.
In Altrec, too, great service.
Warm and light!
This jacket is superb. It is VERY warm and light. The jacket can almost be too warm. I have seen complaints that this jacket doesn't have pit zips, but instead the pockets all go through mesh to double as pit zips.
Another interesting feature is the colors. They are bright, but not (in my opinion) unattractive or on everyone else's jacket. Frankly, they may deter some folks.
I find it warm enough over a T-Shirt here in the Chicago area during the winter.
This jacket is highly recommended
The best softshell money can buy
Ski Whistler with only this layer.
Warm & comfortable
Excellent fleece for cold and windy weather. Fabric and finish is typical Patagonia - top shelf. Lacks pit vents but the pockets may provide ventillation as needed.
Absolutely Awesome!
I already owned a Windbloc jacket from another manufacturer, but there is no comparison. I read a review on the Altrec site that claimed the R4 would keep you warm in Chicago with nothing but a light, long sleeved shirt underneath. Although I seriously doubted this statement I decided to try one for myself. I am amazed and astounded. I went out one early morning to put the garbage at the curb wearing my R4 with a cotton shirt underneath and was plenty warm. This was at 5 AM with a 25 mph wind out of the northwest, no windblock for miles, and the temp at 13 degrees. I have since worn it to track practice as described above instead of my usual 3-4 layers and have been nice and toasty while standing around and coaching. Kudos to Patagonia for creating an outstanding piece of equipment and to Altrec for offering it on sale and for providing their usual high level of quality service.
Warmmmm
I bought this jacket as a replacement for my 9-yr old Patagonia Retro-X fleece (it has plenty of years of trail wear left, it was just looking a little ratty). This new jacket does not disappoint. Although I miss the capilene lining that the older versions had, the R4 is much warmer and fits better. I fully expect this one to last another 9 or 10 years.
Awesome jacket for cold or windy days!
this is a really nice jacket. very pleased with the price also. it is completely windproof which makes it doubly warm. very warm also. extremely stylish also. soft to the touch.
Perfect for outdoor use
I bought this for my son for a two week backcountry ski trip. He reported that it was the one item that he could not have lived without, perfect for almost all conditions.
Great jacket!
This is definitely wind proof and will keep you very warm. There are no vents, but opening the zippers to the pockets does the same thing. The fleece is high quality and does not shed. Highly recommended.
the best piece of outdoor gear I've ever bought
This jacket has it all... lightweight, warmth, and great looks. The wind cuts through most fleece jackets like a knife, but with the windstopper layer, no problem. Even on the coldest nights, this baby is usually all you need, although with a shell, you're good to go in any weather. Highly recommend!
Choose it for the right job and it won't disappoin
Made to keep you warm and does it in style! Like any fleece, will snag on brush, but used for pure warmth it excells. Don't wear it over 40-45 degrees (too warm). Very light. Doesn't pack down well. Definitely windproof. A little bulky to layer under a close fitting shell if you needed to, but it is tolerable. Waterproof laminate between two different weight fleece and it is waterproof, but I suspect the seams would leak with heavy water exposure. Side pockets actually quite good as vents. They are made of a perforated thin material and quite large actually. OK to store gloves, hat, etc. but not real small hard objects. No windflap behind the zipper. No reenforcing material over elbows or shoulders. For hard core use these touches probably should be there considering the price. Sort of a preppy tech type piece. Stand alone use for windy, moderately cold conditions when only light intermittent rain is expected. Very warm but somewhat bulky layering piece. I have a Redpoint Optimus Jacket that is a little less expensive, slightly warmer, has a hood, windflap, smooth skin, a little lighter, just as waterresistent, layers well and is more packable. Not as stylish?
So light, soft, and warm
This jacket is what I wanted for a long time. I was looking for a jacket which is very light, warm, and windproof. I saw many positive reviews here, so gave it a try.
As many people say here, it's very good jacket. And it is a jacket for people who don't want to wear heavy jackets even on windy winter days.
Awesome.
Don't plan on wearing this coat unless it's cold outside. It is an extremely warm jacket, without much bulk, and what I would consider an extremely athletic cut. It might be a good idea to buy a size larger than you wear.
Good quality and comfortable.
I bought the R4 jacket and I like it a lot. I also own a Mountain Hardware Windstopper Tech jacket which costs about the same amount of money. I prefer the R4 because it is softer, has the same windstopping qualities, and it is warmer. The R4 jacket is just more comfortable that the Mountain Hardware jacket. I also think the R4 looks better. Both are good quality products though.
Great Jacket
As an avid hiker, I wanted a jacket that didn't have any shoulder seams, was compactable, and warm. This jacket is all of those things and more. I wanted to test the "windproofness" of this jacket, and hung my arm out my car window doing 60 miles/hr....Didn't feel any of the wind at all. It's fantastic how this jacket keeps you that much warmer by blocking out drafts and breezes. Wow. The jacket is very comfortable and soft to the touch. You can't go wrong with this jacket from Patagonia! It's a little pricey and I am still weighing whether it was worth to money, but so far, I think so!
Consistantly Great
My second one after trying another 'premium' brand (MHW)that balled up after 2 washings.
The consistancy of the Patagonia product never ceases to amaze me!
Great jacket
I've only had the Patagonia R4 jacket for a couple of weeks now, but I love it. It really does block the wind!
I've been using it on morning walks with the dog and it keeps me toasty warm. I took it with me this weekend on an AT weekend hike and it worked great. I have a Mountain Hardware Windblock vest, which does a fairly good job of keeping the torso warm, but this does a much better job.
Excellent Fleece!
I looked around on the net and Altrec had the best price on the jacket-free shipping too. I really like this fleece, it looks great; although I could do without the contrasting trim.
Its very warm and very windproof.
The fit is "athletic" so you can put anything to bulky underneath, but you hardly need to.
All in all, its worth the high price, especially if you have to be outside for long periods of time for work (I do). That and of course it will let you play comfortably for long periods of time as well.
Warmest Jacket out there
This is probably the warmest fleece jacket you can buy. Completely blocks any wind, and kept me warm with only a t-shirt underneath standing at a bus stop on a -20'F day in Boston. The fit is atheletic trim so You can't wear too many layers but you wont need it.
Great product.
Excellent product, amazing how well it blocks the wind and how warm it is. Seems to be worth the money. Spring, fall and winter this should be just the ticket.
windproof and warm
I was looking for something to wear after dark in the winter in the Boulder Colorado area. For its weight it is definitely warm. My only complaint is that is that the jacket is a little too warm under the arms. Makes me think that the light weight version might have been a better choice. A good choice for those who tend to be cold blooded.
R4 Windbloc Jacket
This jacket is very warm even in the coldest weather. It very light, blocks the wind, and keeps me warm as toast. It's even very rain resistant. What else can I say?
Keep in mind that Patagonia's sizes tend to be off. I am usually a Medium for all my clothes but am a Large in the R4. The fabric is stretchy so you will get a good fit but if you go too small it will be just uncomfortable.
My biggest gripe is that there is no wind flap under the zipper. But overall I am very pleased. I would recomend this to anyone looking to keep out of the cold or wind.
Great Windblocking Protection
I have been wearing this jacket on motorcycle rides. I assure this jacket is windproof up to 80-90 miles per hour. I love it, The colors are a little funky. Big deal, the functional aspects of the jacket far outweigh the color choices.
Great, as advertised
The R4 Jacket is a fleece, but it is probably one of the warmest fleeces I've worn. It's not perfect, the colors are a bit unfashionable, but its comfortable and very warm against even the strongest winds.
pretty good jacket
The jacket keeps me warm in the wind. The fit is a little tight (I usually wear a L but this one had to go XL). It is a nice jacket. I haven't really used it in really cold temps yet, but it is almost too warm for breezy fall weather.
Awesome Jacket!
This is a Awesome Jacket, I got a great deal on it, but With the reviews of everybody saying upsize for layering, I called Patagonia and they said upsize as well. but I wish I would have got my normal size. I would recommend trying on prior purchasing.
Good but cannot layer with anything bulky.
Good wind protection. However, cannot layer with anything too bulky since the fit is on the tighter side. Larger size isn't the solution since it would take away from the wind protection.
Well made, tight
This is a fine jacket, but it is a little smaller than others I have, size for size. Consider one size over the usual.
Awesome Idea cut too short
I'm on my second R4 jacket now and think they are pretty good. I love the soft feel of the fabric. I think they should have put the warmer high fiber fleece on the INSIDE and the short fiber on the outside. The sleeves definitely are TOO SHORT, but it doesn't matter as much if you are using the thing as a layering piece. It's not great as an outerwear piece which is what Patagucci designed it for. Overall it's a nice piece of clothing for people with regular length arms.
not long enough
Wonderful fabric, great idea. If only the torso and sleeves were long enough for a tall body! At only 6' 2", raise your arms and the sleeves come way up above your wrist bone. Lift your arms over your head and the torso has exposed your lower back and your front side. I guess it would be OK if you stood still with your arms to the side and down all the time. Patagonia makes some products that fit, but none of the R2s, R2 Body Rugs, or R4s are cut to fit TALL people.
