Our simplest commuter pack doubles as an energetic day-tripper. Made of double-woven ShiftLayer nylon (see sidebar), it features lightweight, breathable, quick-drying FreeFlow shoulder straps with hidden tunnels for a hydration tube, and a sternum strap with a built-in safety whistle. The gusseted main compartment has an interior divider with a zippered, see-through flat pocket for organizing small items. A prismatic reflective liner permits easy searching. The waistbelt self-stores when not in use. With two side stretch-mesh water-bottle pockets. 10 L (600 cu in) 16"x 10"x 7"

• Doubleweave ShiftLayer nylon fabric combines baselayer woven under tension with floating top layer to absorb friction and reduce abrasion (in the way liner socks reduce blisters by transferring friction to harmless contact between sock-fabric layers)
• Gusseted main compartment with interior divider and zippered, see-through flat mesh pockets for organizing small items; outside zippered pocket organizes essentials and provides quick access to boarding pass, cell, etc.; hydration sleeve also works as a divider
• FreeFlow shoulder straps are ultralight, breathable and quick-drying; sliding sternum strap easily adjusts, has built-in safety whistle; tunnels on shoulder straps accommodate hydration tube (or headphone cord)
