Excellent Jacket for most cycling conditions
January 03, 2012
I purchased the Elite Barrier Jacket because it met my needs for cycling. It provides good protection from the cold and wind, it fits well and is comfoortable, and most importantly, it is packable when it warms up. Every Peral Izumi product I have purchased has been top quality. I also like Altrec for their prompt shipping and lifetime return policy. Highly recommend this jacket!Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use
Elite Barrier Jacket
January 24, 2011
I've had the jacket for one month, so I can't honestly rate durability. However, I can say that the jacket is well made. It's very thin, but I've found that when I place it over a long sleeved jersey, it's holds my body heat very well, even down to the low 40s. It should fit easily into the back pocket of a jersey, if you choose to take it off. I choose to simply unzip it as the outside temperature rises.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Cons: none
You cannot go wrong with P-I

These "Barrier" jackets are great, but be certain as to which of the three grades you are buying. The quality actually DOES increase with the price. So, weather-wise, this one (the middle grade) works very well with wind and my other "barrier" jackets have been great in light rain. In colder weather, you will need layering. The only reason I rated it with four stars is the single pocket in back, secured with only velcro. I'd like at least two pockets and zippers. Otherwise, great. PS: P-I is always top dollar. I can only afford it on sale, which Altrec is pretty good about.Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use
Perfect Jacket for Spring/Early Fall Biking
January 05, 2013
My husband rides his bike to work every day. He loves this jacket. Works like bicycle attire is suppose to work. It's light weight so better for spring and fall days than winter. Great overall jacket for biking.Pros: Lasts forever, Performance, Great value

This is a great jacket that does exactly what it says and I would highly recommend it. Definitely windproof and great over a thermal base layer on cold fall/winter rides.Pros: Build quality, Ease of use, Great value

Jacket worked very well on a 40 degree day even while descending at 30+ MPH. It kept me from getting chilled while allowing moisture to evaporate. It also can be removed and put in a jersey pocket easily.
1 of many in my closet for the elements

It's a light jacket that can fit in a back pocket of a jersey. In light rain, or 45-60 degree weather this piece can be a life saver. With a base, jersey & this jacket fall rides are a dream. Although the jacket doesn't offer any insulation, it's a great outer to stop wind chill or light rain that otherwise could leave you hating life. It's a piece you can wear a few light cycling layers under without a tight feel. I know that spring rides in the light rain this is a piece that you'll want to throw over your thermal jersey & enjoy life. I personally tested it with a base layer, soft shell jacket, with this piece as a outer. I was enjoying cycling in 45 degree weather, like it was a summer day. It will be perfect for those who need a little wind & water protection on the cooler days. If your out on a ride in 45-65 degree weather & it doesn't look good. This light weight piece can be a life saver.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use
Elite Barrier Jacket, Great for Southern winters
October 26, 2010
I was thinking of purchasing a Giordana FormaRed Jacket after reading several reviews. However, winters here down South don't really ever get that cold and thought that getting a jacket like the Giordana would be overkill. So after further research, decided on the Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier jacket. The plan was to wear high quality base layers underneath the jacket depending on the weather. I also purchased the Pearl Izumi P.R.O Series Barrier Base Layer for a cold night. I went riding around 4am and the temp was around 50 degrees. I wore the Izumi base layer and the Izumi Barrier Jacket along with Pearl Izumi Elite Thermal cycling tights. The jacket provided excellent wind protection! I actually had to take off the base layer and just put a t-shirt on because it was too warm and wearing just that, I was very comfortable through my whole ride. I felt no cold drafts leaking into the jacket whatsoever. The fit was perfect! I am 5"11 and weigh 185lbs. I ordered a LARGE. The jacket fist perfectly. The best way to describe how the jacket fits would be similiar to buying clothes ...let's say from Banana Republic or Abercrombie...that are advertised as a SLIM FIT. Not too tight...just enough room to comfortably move around. I hope that helps. The jacket is very light in the way it feels when you wear it. I love it! I have been fortunate to not be able to report on the water resistance part of the jacket. I don't intend on riding when it's raining. I would highly recommend this jacket. I ordered this jacket through Altrec.com. Excellent customer service, great communication, and fast shipping. You will not be disappointed with the jacket or Altrec.com.Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Great value, very light feeling, great fit, great wind protection
Purchased for running
December 10, 2010
I purchased the Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier jacket for running and for casual wear. After three uses running I am very pleased with it. One run in low 40s temperatures with light rain and wind is enough for me to say its a great product. With only a short sleeve and long sleeve tech shirt under the jacket in the rain I was actually almost too warm that day. The jacket is very light weight and well put together. The other night at 32 degrees and the same two shirt set up I was warm for my evening run. Zipped up all the way kept my neck warm too. I had tried on the same jacket in a running store and found sizing to run small. I usually wear medium shirts but needed a large in the jacket (I'm 6 feet, 176 lbs). I recommend it!Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Great value, Cons: size runs a little small
4 STARS FOR THIS JACKET.

IT FITS PERFECTLY AND LOOKS GREAT. MOST IMPORTANTLY IT KEEPS YOU WARM WHEN NEEDED. I LIVE OFF OF LAKE MICHIGAN AND RIDE ALONG THE LAKE. I USED IT THIS MORNING WHILE IT WAS RAINING AND IT KEPT ME DRY AND WARM. I AM ORDERING ANOTHER ONE FOR A FRIEND.
Not what I expected
April 12, 2011
We have bought Pearl Izumi products several times and never had them run small. I have worn Large for a long time but this Large was not. Plus the fabric was much lighter than I expected. I had thought this material would be thicker with more wind & weather protection. I have no problems with the shipping or processing of the order. I am in the process of returning the item and so far that has been handled efficiently as well.
PI Elite Barrier Jacket
December 07, 2012
I'm an avid Bay Area, CA, cyclist that rides year round. I've owned this jacket in its various iterations for over 15 years and have always found it useful on cool, windy days in temperatures of 50 - 65. Layered over a base layer and long sleeve jersey it's very comfortable for those early morning rides. I'm 5-9 and 140 lb. and find the SM to be a perfect fit. Close around the waist and not too much extra fabric in the body.Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Great value

I took this jacket out on a ride yesterday and was impressed at the job the jacket did in resisting the wind. I purchased a size L and it fits great (I'm 6' about 175 lbs). All in all a great purchase and I would recommend. I also like how packable the jacket is and the fact that it packs into its own pouch.
