1400 Dry Box 2 5 2 2
New latch design a failure I purchased the Pelican 1400 case with the new easy open latch design. On my first outting with it my case slide about four feet down a rocky bank. Both latches released, my new Canon Digital EOS camera and spare lens popped out. The camera hit the rocks and the lens amazingly landed on the lid. Further tests found failure rates of 40% on drops of four feet. I documented the tests in an email to Pelican. I will be happy to forward what I found to you if you email me. I have had Pelican products for years and have at least twelve of their boxes with zero failure rate until the new latch design. I even ordered another 1400 and tested it. It failed 50% of the time on the same drops. My old Pelican is like the new style 1400 but with a fixed handle, old pressure valve and old latches failed zero times under the same test. Of the new latch design cases I had failures rates of 4 of 10 drops and 5 of 10 drops. In talking with Pelican over the phone and email they give no indication there is an issue with the latches. The case kept my camera dry through Class III & IV I bought the Pelican 1400 case for my Canon A2e. Cutting the foam out to fit the camera was very easy and pulling the camera in and out of the case goes without a problem. I did notice the gasket starting to pop out of the case, but I think with a little care it will stay in place. Overall, the case kept my camera dry during it's first trip on the Snake River. One day of Class III and IV rapids on a raft, and two days of Class II and III. No sign of dampness even while pulling the camera in and out in wet conditions or in the rain. Other than the price which just seems too high, I highly recommend the case to anybody who needs to keep items protected and dry in the harshest and wettest of conditions. May 31, 2000
