Description

The benchmark for handled ascenders, the Petzl Ascension, has been refined to provide greater comfort; efficiency, ease of use. The ergonomically shaped grip of the Ascension is over molded with rubber for greater friction and the broader surface provides greater comfort while pulling on the ascender. The grip is wider at the bottom providing better comfort for your hand during use. The index finger indent has also been increased offering greater efficiency when pulling on the ascender. The trigger to open/close the cam is now recessed inside the frame to avoid accidentally opening the cam while in use. The cam has been redesigned to minimize friction when sliding the ascender along the rope while the angled teeth provide secure grip in the worst conditions (wet, icy, or on muddy ropes). The geometry of the single piece aluminum frame ensures optimal handle orientation when the device is loaded and will maintain solid, comfortable performance even after thousands of meters of jugging.

Specifications

  • NEW: Molded grip provides even greater comfort with a more ergonomically shaped handle. This new shape keeps your hand from sliding to the bottom of the frame each time you pull on the ASCENSION. The bi-material handle includes a rubber over molded grip increasing the comfort and your grip in wet or icy conditions
  • NEW: Chrome-plated steel cam with angled teeth and self-cleaning slot securely grips the rope, even in muddy or icy conditions. The cam has been refined to increase the efficiency in which the ascender glides on the rope. The wear area has been moved lower on the cams surface to increase its durability. The cam engages without losing a millimeter each time it is weighted and glides smoothly up a rope with a minimal of effort which will be truly appreciated after the first 300 meters of jugging
  • NEW: The trigger is now recessed into the frame guarding it when ascending lower angled sections while maintaining the ability to open/close the cam with only one hand
  • Mono-frame construction eliminates weaknesses and keeps the ascender lightweight and durable for years of use
  • Multiple attachment points allow for different uses (e.g. self-belaying, haul systems, etc)
  • Anodized frames are color coded for easy identification (black -left / gray -right)
  • Safety catch prevents the cam from opening too far thus keeping the rope captured for added safety
  • 1 cm secondary hole at the bottom will accommodate a screw link for attaching aiders, slings, etc.

Best ascender on the market
January 29, 2005

The Petzl ascender is the caddy of ascenders. I'm an Army guy who came up doing nothing but prusic climbing so when I began buying better civilian equipment I couldn't believe the difference and when I tried the Petzl it was clearly in a class of it's own.

Great Acenders

I bought both the left & right, will be using them for a climb on Aconcagua. Also looked at the Black Diamond. These are lighter and easier to use.

The petzl ascender is a quality piece of equipment. Purchased the ascender for my Denali climb in June 2011. I read many positive reviews and will update my review in July.

Solid Product
February 14, 2011

So far in my use the Ascension seems to be as solid as I would expect from Petzl. Disengaging the cam is a little more difficult than the BD counterpart but no real issue. Overall I chose this ascender more because of a price point and because the handle was a bit more comfortable for me. I have used it on some 9mm so far with solid hold and no noted damage to the rope sheath. Solid product designed to seemingly have a long life expectancy. Would recommend.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Cons: Cost
