Since 1981, this small company started by alpinist Rab Carrington in Sheffield, United Kingdom, has been designing equipment “for the most extreme conditions in the world.” Alpinists know very well where many of the most extreme conditions in the world are found and what a huge difference minor comforts, such as lightweight warmth, wind protection and a warm night’s sleep can make on the morale of the climbers and the success of an alpine expedition.

Although Rab apparel works great on less ambitious mountain endeavors, such as winter day hikes and summer camping trips, there is a certain comfort in knowing that the company you’re supporting has designed your gear and apparel to perform in the most hostile mountain conditions. As a result, Rab has become renowned for producing top-notch outdoor clothing and sleeping bags for everyone from weekend warriors to seasoned mountaineers.

Anyone who spends a lot of time in the outdoors becomes passionate about protecting our earth’s beauty, and Rab is no different. Rab designers seek to lessen the environmental impact of their products without sacrificing performance. They do this by creating products that last up to 30 years, providing care, repair and refill services on many products, being transparent about their production processes, and working with likeminded suppliers, factories and carriers.

Are you crossing some mountains off your ticklist in the Pacific Northwest this spring? Check out the men’s Rab Xenon Jacket, an incredibly lightweight and durable alpine jacket stuffed with super warm, Primaloft One synthetic insulation. For your garden variety of cold weather activities, from backcountry skiing to ice climbing, backpacking, snow camping and belaying on cold days at the rock wall, you’ll want to keep yourself warm in the Microlight Down Jacket (men’s or women’s). Lightweight, durable, and stuffed with 750-fill European goose down, this versatile Rab down jacket can’t be beat. When you’re doing high aerobic activities in cold weather, like cross country skiing or rock climbing, opt for the Rab Microlight Down Vest to keep your core insulated. Rab also produces incredibly well-performing mid-layers, such as the Rab Shadow Fleece Hoodie for men, which boasts lightweight, durable and wind-resistant Polartec Wind Pro fleece fabric and Hardface technology for awesome wind protection. Don’t forget to check out the Rab Boreas Windshell for men, winner of the Backpacker Magazine Editors’ Choice Award, when you need some burly yet lightweight protection from whipping winds on a summer mountain ascent or a blustery multi-pitch climb.
